10 Things to Know About the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 Update

Published

on

The iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update is still current and today we want to take a look at the most important things you need to know about it as we push away from the release date towards the next iPhone 5 iOS 9 update.

Apple’s iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update was initially confirmed back in December with a release into the company’s beta program for developers and the general public. The iOS 9.2.1 beta didn’t confirm a whole lot.

The iOS 9.2.1 release date remained a mystery until mid-January when Apple deemed it worthy for public consumption.

A few weeks ago, Apple pulled the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update out of beta and pushed it to users around the world. If you’re on iOS 9.2 and you check iTunes or your Settings for a software update, iOS 9.2.1 will be there.

The iOS 9.2.1 update isn’t a milestone upgrade. It doesn’t bring any new and exciting features to the iPhone 5. Instead, the update is focused on performance and security. It’s a small update for the aging former flagship but that doesn’t make it any less important.

Here, we want to outline what you need to know about iOS 9.2.1 for the iPhone 5. This roundup takes a look at potential problems, the iOS 9.2.1 update’s performance, details about the jailbreak, and the update that might replace it in a few weeks.

iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 Review

We've been using the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update for a little more than two weeks now and the update is still performing well on the aging former flagship. We recently put together a full review of the iPhone 5's current upgrade.

After two weeks of intense use, we have yet to discover any experience-breaking bugs on board the software and its continues to hold up in key areas.

Battery life is still very solid, connectivity (Bluetooth, LTE, Wi-Fi) is still strong and reliable, apps are behaving, and the lag that we witnessed immediately after the installation process is gone. We haven't experienced any lag opening Control Center, Spotlight or Notification Center.

Overall, our experience with the iOS 9.2.1 update has been excellent and we recommend it to iPhone 5 users who are already on iOS 9. It has the potential to improve performance.

Those of you coming from an older version of iOS 8 like iOS 8.4.1 need to be a little more careful. Remember, there's no way to go back to anything older than iOS 9.2 at this point.

iOS 9.2.1 broke Siri on my iPhone 6S. I’m super annoyed with Apple right now cause I can no longer place phone calls or send texts via Siri handsfree in the car.
