LG G5 Release Confirmed: Here’s What You Need to Know

Published

on

For months we’ve been hearing rumors about the upcoming new LG G5 smartphone, but today the company made it official. LG recently sent out press invites for an event in Spain on February 21st, the same day the Galaxy S7 will be unveiled, and now LG Mobile has confirmed that’s when they’ll debut the new LG G5. Here’s what potential buyers need to know.

The LG G4 was announced at the end of April in 2015, but not released for nearly two months. However, this year the company is aiming for a much earlier release in an effort to take Samsung head on. And that’s more clear than ever thanks to a slew of tweets and photos we received today.

In January reports and rumors suggested the LG G5 would be announced in February, and then LG scheduled a press event for February 21st, the day before Mobile World Congress begins. If there was any doubt as to what would be announced, they confirmed today it will indeed be the LG G5.

Multiple posts to Twitter along with the LG social blog all have images showing the number “5” along with the hashtag #LGG5. Essentially confirming that the new flagship all metal smartphone will be announced on the 21st, and released shortly thereafter.

That said, we still don’t have an actual release date but we do have multiple teasers from LG along with leaks suggesting when it could be available in the United States.

The official LG social blog is already calling February 21st “LG G5 day” which is their way of trying to steal some thunder and limelight away from Samsung and its upcoming flagship Galaxy S7.

Now that we know 100% for sure that the new LG G5 is going to be revealed on February 21st, here’s what potential buyers need to know about it, and how it compares to the Galaxy S7.

LG G5 Design

Over the past month the actual LG G5 has leaked in the wild, but the phone is completely covered in a protective shell to hide its final design. However, we already know what to expect based on countless leaks, press renders and other things.

In 2016 the LG G5 will finally try to compete with Samsung and Apple, by being made entirely out of metal. Users can expect an all aluminum LG G5 with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, the volume keys moved back to the side, and dual cameras on the back, which we’ll talk more about below.

Multiple leaks have all but confirmed these details, not to mention cases have already surfaced suggesting the same thing. The image above is one of many leaks, but does give us a small idea of what to expect.

The LG G5 will come with either a 5.3-inch display with a secondary screen above it, making it 5.5-inches like previous years, or just be 5.5-inches in general with a 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD resolution. Some leaks suggest it will have three cameras and two screens like the LG V10, but we’ll have to wait and see.

What we do know though, is the LG G5 will be made of metal, have a fingerprint scanner and two cameras on the back, a laser auto focus, a micro-SD slot for storage expansion, a USB Type-C charging port, and something we’re hearing will be called the “Magic Slot”. This is reportedly a slot that slides down from the bottom back to expose the replaceable battery, micro-SD, and possibly other 3rd party accessories. It’s odd, but refreshing, and we’ll know for sure on February 21st.

LG G5 Specs

The new LG G5 will be one of the most powerful phones released in the first half of 2016, and be very similar under the hood as the Galaxy S7 and many other phones. Here’s what we know so far based on multiple leaks, benchmarks, first-hand reports and other various sources.

LG G5 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quantum HD Display (or 5.3-inches)
  • 8-core Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage, micro-SD slot for expansion
  • 16 and 8 Megapixel Dual rear cameras, OIS, laser auto-focus and more
  • 8 Megapixel front camera (possible second display above main screen like V10)
  • 3,000 mAh removable and replaceable battery
  • Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow
  • Fingerprint Scanner on back (buttons moved to side, not on back like prior years)
  • Premium All Metal Design
  • USB Type-C Charging Port
  • more

We don’t have any other details about the possibility of the second display, or anything like an IP67 dust or water resistant design like the Galaxy S7. That said, they both are very similar on paper, and may come down to the final design, camera performance, price, or other factors.

Either way, the LG G5 could be one of the best phones of the year. A big display, a premium design, two cameras on back for improved photography and a replaceable battery and storage option. Everything many Android smartphones buyers want.

LG G5 Camera

Above we mentioned the LG G5 will have three cameras. That’s yet to be 100% confirmed, but reported multiple times from various different sources. We’ve seen dual cameras before, but hopefully LG has something neat planned. The posts to Twitter are already talking up the camera, so that is expected to be a key part of the announcement.

Users can expect two cameras on the back that will work together. A main 16 megapixel f/1.8 (or better) camera similar to the G4 last year with laser auto focus, image stabilization and other things. However, there will also be a secondary 8 megapixel photo for wider angle shots, focus effects, advanced lighting and more.

This could add extra features to the settings and controls while taking photos, post-processing tweaks like re-adjusting the focus point and more. A lot of this isn’t new, but LG has some pretty great cameras lately, and the LG G5 looks to follow that trend.

We can also expect a decent 8 megapixel wide-angle front facing camera.

LG G5 Release Date

Today LG confirmed the new LG G5 will be announced on the 21st of February, the same day as the Galaxy S7, but we still don’t know the release date. The G4 was unveiled at the end of April but released in the United States in July, so we could see a similar 30-45 day wait.

The Korean Times reported that the LG G4 was ready to go in March, and could have been released earlier but was delayed in fear of being overshadowed by the Galaxy S6. This year though, LG wants to take Samsung head-on, and release the phone much earlier.

We don’t have a concrete date yet, but so far we’re hearing the LG G5 will be released before the end the first quarter of 2016, meaning before the end of March. Most likely it will launch internationally in March, and be available from US carriers in early April, but we’ll have to wait and see.

If they make this a 5.6in phone. With a ips display it won’t sell well at all. We are tired of huge phones. So we will buy the s7 with amoled. Come on Lg. U are smarter than that. Give us a smaller high end phone. And u will sell 3x as many. It’s not rocket science.
