Xbox One Fallout 4 Patch 1.4: Impressions & Performance

The latest Fallout 4 update is finally out for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and today we want to take a look at its performance. These early impressions are focused on the Fallout 4 patch 1.4 for the Xbox One.

The new Fallout 4 patch 1.4 isn’t as big as the previous update but it’s still an extremely important update for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

The update comes with several important bug fixes, performance improvements, some new art customization options for those that love to enhance settlements, and support for Bethesda’s Fallout 4 DLC. The first Fallout 4 DLC, Automatron, will be out on March 22nd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

I’ve spent the past two days playing Fallout 4 on the 1.4 update. I’ve spent most of my time playing on the Xbox One and today I want to take a look at a few things I’ve found in the 15 or so hours I’ve roamed the wasteland.

These initial impressions of the Fallout patch 1.4 for Xbox One will cover some of my initial problems and some of the improvements I’ve seen. Per usual, I’m going to continue updating this with new information as we move away from last week’s release date.

Fallout 4 Patch 1.4 Installation

I installed the latest Fallout 4 patch on Friday when it was first released for Xbox One. I’m sure many of you did as well.

If you’re still getting around to playing Fallout 4 and installing the patch, note that it’s a big one. It’s over 2GB in size on the Xbox One. If you don’t have Instant On flipped on, it’s going to take you a few minutes to download and install.

Mileage is going to vary based on your connection speed but my download and installation took about seven minutes over an extremely fast network.

If you don’t have a high-speed network at home or your wireless can be finicky, I recommend plugging an ethernet cord into the back of your console. It could help save you some time.

Saves Work

I’ve been using the Fallout 1.4 update for a couple of days now and so far I’ve yet to run into a corrupted save file.

I’ve loaded up new saves and old saves without experiencing any major problems. That’s important because I, like many others, have seen some files get corrupted out of the blue.

I haven’t heard any about any widespread complaints about game corruption but if you do happen to run into a problem, check out our list of potential fixes.

Fallout 4 Patch 1.4 Performance

I’ve only been using the Fallout 4 1.4 update for about 15 hours (real-time, not in-game) so I haven’t been able to cover every corner of the map.

I’ve continued on my journey but I’ve done my best to revisit some of locations that were giving me trouble on the previous versions of Fallout 4. Here’s what I’ve found on 1.4.

I’ve noticed some small improvements in indoor locations like Vault 81. Bethesda didn’t call out any specific changes but the location feels a lot smoother. Before 1.4, I had been experiencing noticeable lag and sluggishness when I entered the main room.

I typically need a drink after encountering lag with Vertibirds and radiation storms.

I haven’t noticed any lag while sprinting or when changing weapons. These were a big problem for me on 1.3. Fallout 4 update 1.4’s performance is solid thus far but it’s far from perfect.

Radiation storms still bring the occasional stutter though the frequency seems to have been toned down after 1.4. I’m also seeing serious frame rate issues in densely populated areas when Vertibirds are flying overhead or when they’re exploding nearby.

I had one go down right near me last night and my game started crawling for a good 30 seconds before it recovered.

Bug Fixes

The Fallout 1.4 update comes with a long list of bug fixes for lingering problems, some of which were impacting my game on Xbox One.

As a reminder, here’s the full list. I’ve bolded ones that were problems for me in early versions of Fallout 4.

  • General stability and performance improvements
  • During “Getting a Clue” quest, Kellogg’s desk will remain a working container
  • During “Rocket’s Red Glare”, resolved issue where companions could not be dismissed after completing the quest
  • Fixed an issue with “Kremvh’s Tooth” quest item not spawning properly
  • Fixed an issue with screen effects not clearing away properly after using a scope
  • Fixed an issue with trying to sprint while in third person with a minigun equipped
  • Rank 4 of Demolition Expert perk now properly increases the area effect of explosives
  • Fixed an issue where Calvin Whitaker would disappear in Vault 81
  • Fixed an issue where Ninja and Sandman perks combined would apply the incorrect damage bonus
  • Fixed an issue where Rank 3 of Grim Reaper’s Sprint did not fill critical meter properly
  • Fixed an issue with key cards not spawning correctly in Vault 75
  • Fixed an issue where enemies would stop spawning during “Airship Down”
  • Being in first person while wearing power armor and quickly switching weapons will no longer cause the Pip-Boy to be stuck
  • Fixed an issue with the autosave counter getting incorrectly reset
  • Fixed issue that would cause the Pip-Boy menu to turn invisible while swimming
  • Fixed an issue where scrapping larger quantities of a single item would inadvertently scrap a legendary item
  • Fixed issue where exiting workbenches would cause third person to stop working properly
  • The Scribe can now be assigned consecutive settlements properly
  • Fixed issue with duplicating scraps shipments
  • Fixed issue with vendors not properly exchanging caps after several consecutive transactions in a row
  • Fixed issue with the quicksave and autosave message persisting through loading screens
  • Fixed an issue where updating to the latest patch would cause Options settings to reset back to default (Xbox One)
  • Fixed an issue with loading save with a placed object in water, not properly floating

This is an excellent set of fixes and I’m glad that I finally get to interact with my boy Calvin from Vault 81. That said, Bethesda still has a ton of work to do as I’ll note further down.

One Thing I Love

It’s great that the Scrounger perk now includes additional common ammo types but I’m way more excited about the changes to Settlement defense.

With the 1.4 update on board “settlements under attack will now display an updated message with the results of the attack if player does not respond.”

That’s right. You no longer have to travel to defend your settlements if you don’t want to. You can let them fend for themselves. I’ve built up a mind-boggling amount of defense at each of mine so I haven’t had to really do much after 1.4. They’ve successfully defended on their own each time.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy wiping out Super Mutants and synths attacking my settlers but I don’t like having to do it each and every time. Now I don’t have to and it feels great.

Fallout Patch 1.4 Problems

Here, I am going to list some of the problems I’ve run into after installing 1.4:

  • Dogmeat and Radstags occasionally fall into the terrain. I’ve also seen enemies, legendary enemies included, fall into the ground rendering them impossible to loot.
  • Bloodbugs and Radroaches sometimes refuse to die.
  • Sound cuts out quite frequently forcing me to dashboard and then re-enter the game.
  • I still can’t recruit Tina De Luca from Vault 81.

These are the issues I’ve noticed and there are apparently a number of others that Bethesda’s engineers will need to look at before they release their next patch.

So far, I’m liking what I see. Performance is, for the most part, solid and the bug fixes have corrected some nagging issues.

There are still some problems with the Fallout 4 1.4 patch on board but the fact that I haven’t crashed, at all, is a dream come true.

Earlier this month, Bethesda released its Fallout 4 1.4 update for the PC. The update brought bug fixes, improvements to settlement attacks, and some new items for settlements. It also delivered support for Automatron.

The Fallout 4 1.4 patch adds support for Bethesda's upcoming DLC add-ons which meant that it needed to come to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 before the Automatron release. Bethesda already confirmed that that would be the case.

Last week, Bethesda finally released the 1.4 patch for the Xbox One and PS4. The 1.4 update for console (like the PC update) delivered achievements for Automatron. Expect these to stick after the release on March 22nd:

- Mechanical Menace: Complete Mechanical Menace.

- The Most Toys: Build 10 Robot Mods.
