Galaxy S7 Edge vs Galaxy S6 Edge Plus: 5 Key Differences

Published

on

The popular Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is better than the big Galaxy S6 Edge Plus from 2015, and here we’ll explain why. With the Note 7 completely canceled the S7 Edge is the best thing from Samsung right now. With the year coming to a close and countless Black Friday or holiday deals coming, buyers will be looking to upgrade. Here’s what you need to know about how these two phones differ.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was a nice phone but too small for many. Then later, a bigger Galaxy S6 Edge Plus was surprisingly released in August along with the Galaxy Note 5. Both of those were then replaced with the Galaxy S7 Edge, which is where we are today.

Read: Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review

The S6 Edge Plus has a large 5.7-inch display similar to the Note 5, but instead of an S-Pen stylus it has a curved display. It’s flashy and turns heads, not to mention adds multiple new features. That said, read on for five key things that separates the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus from the slightly smaller Galaxy S7 Edge that arrived on March 11th and is available from all carriers in the US and around the globe.

Edge-Plus-button1

In early 2015 the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were impressive phones that arrived in April. They had a premium new design made entirely out of glass and metal, curved screens, a great camera, wireless charging and more. Samsung made their best and most premium phones to date, but that came with some huge compromises for buyers.

In order to make them out of a premium metal material, Samsung had to do away with the replaceable battery, and even took away the micro-SD card to expand storage. This lead many to keep their Galaxy S5, or try the LG G4 instead. That said, the amazing display, design, fingerprint scanner and camera that completed the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge made it one of Samsung’s best phones ever.

Looking at the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and the Galaxy S7 Edge buyers will barely notice the difference, aside from the size. This year the S7 Edge comes with a 5.5-inch Quad-HD display, which is just a hair smaller than the Edge Plus from late last year. Rather than offer a 5.1-inch Edge and a huge 5.7-inch Edge Plus, this year Samsung chose the perfect middle ground at 5.5-inches, and its their best phone yet. Not to mention there’s a lot more to it than just the screen.

Those considering one or the other or upgrading will want to know all the details. Read on for everything you need to know about both phones, and what makes the Galaxy S7 Edge better in almost every way. It will be heavily discounted this holiday season making the next few months a great time to buy. However, a Galaxy S8 is coming in March of 2017.

Galaxy S7 Edge vs Galaxy S6 Edge Plus: Design

Galaxy S7 Edge vs Galaxy S6 Edge Plus: Design

This year Samsung kept the design nearly identical to last year. It was an award-winning all glass and metal phone, so there was no need to change it. Instead, it was refined and improved, which gave Samsung room to add more features and a huge battery. Anyone that saw or used the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus last year will know exactly what to expect from the S7 Edge. A beautiful smartphone made of glass and metal in Black, Gold, Silver and now Blue Coral.

The Galaxy S7 lineup for 2016 retains the same excellent build quality, and a similar overall design. Samsung kept everything the same, but refined it a bit. The buttons are similarly located on the side, and there's a dedicated home button with a built-in fingerprint scanner for security.

One big addition to the Galaxy S7 Edge is IP68 dust and water resistance. This is huge. Then, just like the original we have the 3.5 mm headphone jack, micro-USB charging port, and the speakers on bottom. It's worth noting though, the Galaxy S7 does not have the IR sensor on top for the remote control feature. Samsung removed it.

The biggest change aside from the screen is the glass on back is now curved. The Galaxy S6 Edge had a flat back, but the new S7 Edge is rounded on front and back. This keeps the beautiful and unique "Edge" and its features on front, but makes that back rounded so it feels thinner in your hand. The phone is actually a little bit thicker, to add a bigger battery and other feature's we'll mention in a moment, but the curve makes it actually feel thinner than last years models. The camera is also thinner, leaving almost no bulge or hump on back. The entire phone looks and feels thinner.

The "Edge" was a gimmick last year, but not it's actually worth using. On the Galaxy S7 Edge Samsung added new features and functionality, 9 panels to add apps and shortcuts too, making it far more useful in 2016.

I had the S6 edge Plus for 14 days and I loved it, but when I heard the S7 was coming in a couple weeks I gave it back and decided to wait for the S7. It seems hard for me to believe there can be a better screen and better picture quality. Pics were just so perfect on the Plus. I’m still wondering if I made the right choice but your article is pretty convincing. Thanks.

At the ongoing Samsung Developers Conference 2016 event, principal engineers at Samsung demonstrated a new TouchWiz launcher, Samsung’s engineers note that battery life on a 3600 mAh battery — like the one found in the Galaxy S7 edge — could be extended by 40 minutes just by moving to this new launcher built with Vulkan.

I got the s6 edge plus the day it came out. I always had all the notes 1,2,3,4 but as I was going to get the note 5 I seen the 6 edge plus…it was all over. Absolutely the best looking best performing phone out there. Today is February 29, 2016. Just got my s7 edge. Screen is a hairline smaller and extremely similar to the s6 edge plus. Screen is just incredibly clear, have not used the camera yet. However the new processor is very fast. I am hoping for a s7 edge plus toward the end of the year!!! But my s7 is extremely nice and looking forward to playing with the new features.

S7edge – it says 8 core snapdragon 820 CPU, but afaik the snapdragon is only 4 cores…

i just got my s6 edge plus toward the end of the February, totally in love with it. What makes the S7 worth the switch?

The galaxy s7 edge is a Quad core snapdragon 820 their is not a separate chip running 4 extra cores in the United states . Other regions in Europe etc got the exyos 8 core chip set. I own the US Version ……

In my opinion I would not upgrade until they come out with a new note, I hate that once you put your Sim card in the device you are locked in with that carrier , you can pay to get a sim reset code but it is pricey and time consuming this is the first locked galaxy s line , and I switch between carriers for work so I have to get a code every time I switch.

IR sensor on the s6 and s6 edge is one single feature that outsmarts the s7 and s7 edge and I won’t be surprised if it reappears on s8. It was so sad to give away my s6 edge because of that feature but the battery drained way too fast.

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and I can assure you that it does not have an ir blaster. Thought I’d let you know as it was listed in the spec comparison as having an ir blaster.

The spec list for Samsung Galaxy s6 edge plus is incorrect. It does not have the IR blaster ……unfortunately. Great otherwise.

I’m with you I have the s6 edge plus I will not be upgrading to the s7 or the s7 edge why would I the one I have is fantastic some people are so stupid they like oh the s7 has a faster processor and I’m and OK you think so they just say that to get you to spend your money its about what network your on and what apps are running I LOVE MY S6 EDGE PLUS

        04/06/2016 at 7:40 am

Good day , I agree with you that it is not worth upgrading the s6 + by s7 edge , first larger screen, the same design line , upgrading to marshmallow you leave it almost equal to the new , in the day to day you do not feel the Unlike processor speed, but at the price if . Like Samsung in three months it will make us feel the edge s7 is rubbish and his new team as you call it is the best investment and dedes buy it if or if . Another thing is but what you can buy one or the other question of money you want to spend and your needs.

Samsung keeps screwing the pooch by missing the fine details. Make the battery replaceable. Make the battery replaceable. Make the battery replaceable. How many times and how many people have to say this to Samsung before they will listen again? People are not buying the S6 and S7 phones and hanging onto their S5 because of this single reason. now people will hold onto their S5 and S6 phones because Samsung omitted the infrared on top and it cannot be a remote control. People rely upon the apps in the android store that makes the phone do these things. Samsung keeps screwing people. They did FINALLY listen and put the sdcard slot back on the S7. They also added water RESISTANCE, hooray. It better be a little bit more than resistance. Does ANYONE want the SNAPDRAGON CPU, instead of the Exynos CPUs? – AS this Exynos CPU is faster, cooler, and unless there’s new technology it uses the battery better. Why would Samsung put Exynos CPUs in Europe and not in the United States? To save a few dollars? Bad move. Where did the 16 megapixel camera go that was on the S6 edge plus? Why did Samsung go backwards to 12 megapixel again? For a trick tech in the new camera that is more expensive and maybe Samsung had to use a lower resolution to balance cost? Bad move. Keep the sdcard slot, infrared abilities, 3.5mm audio jack, micro USB charging port, dual micro phones, and EXPAND THE SPEAKERS – both in number and quality. Increase the memory options and include a 64GB/128GB versions – even if those have to be direct from Samsung. Finally make it so the bloatware can be fricken removed, and AGAIN make the battery easily replaceable by users!

I have the galaxy s6 edge plus and I love it won’t change it for nothing in the world everyone is talking about this s7 and s7 edge its still the same as the s6 gen the only stupid thing is that people upgrade or buy the s7 and s7 edge due to rumors of faster processor you fool its all about what network your on and what apps you have running I will not be getting the s7 or the s7 edge why for what

      03/28/2016 at 3:36 am

If you like your phone, keep your damn phone. This isn’t a competition. No one is stupid and foolish for wanting a waterproof phone with a badass camera that doesn’t need to be charged every three hours.

My phone only needs to be charged once daily and the camera is not better who wants to down grade to a 12 mp from a 16mp yea a fool I tested the phone in each and every way low light sunlight the dark ect and my s6 edge plus has the better advantage so what it’s waterproof but you have speakers on your phone you talk threw and hear from waterproof my ass and a SD card slot I don’t care for all of that but my S6 EDGE PLUS CAMERA IS KILLING THE S7 AND S7 EDGE POINT BLANK PERIOD BUT YOU HAVE YOUR OWN OPINION

For the skeptical people, the s7edge is of course better than the s6 series from extra storage protection from water, picture quality, bigger battery, it’s a no brainer.

      04/13/2016 at 9:17 am

What do you mean bigger battery both of the phones battery is the same what drains battery is the screen light you have it set to and running apps

        04/15/2016 at 8:12 pm

S7 edge battery definitely bigger 3600 mah,do a Google search you’ll see the difference. Also you can wait for your update and you’ll see the difference between these two phones

      • Cory Gunther

        04/26/2016 at 12:28 pm

No the Galaxy S7 Edge battery is 3,600 mAh while the older (and bigger) Galaxy S6 Edge+ from 2015 is only 3,000 mAh. Even the small Galaxy S7 has the same size battery.

Both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge get decently improved battery life than any S6 model.

Helpful. I own the s6 edge plus i brought it on lunch but i dont understand why people need to upgrade all the time im quite happy with the phone i have i understand maybe a 5 year perioud of an update becouse of all the way new advanced but you look at it samsung are competeing with apple apple hate samsung so apple bring out small updates and so do samsung what 5 key diffances between the s7 edge and s6 edge plus. I dont know about alot of people but i get a new phone in the 5 6 year period but 5 key difference is not really worth it if it where 50+ key diffances well i would most deffently update but thease small little tweeks and twerks is not worth it and apple are bringing out like the iphone se bissniss and afew others il pass il wait for a few moore years becouse where getting to the point where technology is pritty much maxed out i know i work for the PSN network. Anyway theres my thoughts there out there.

I feel you I have the s6 edge plus to and I don’t see any reason for me to upgrade to the s7 they say and that about the s7 but what’s the better reason on it has an SD card slot so what they say it’s waterproof but how can a device that has speakers to talk and hear be so waterproof and the camera is 12 mega pixels and the s6 edge plus camera is 16 mega pixels will not be upgrading I LOVE MY S6 EDGE PLUS I’m rocking with this till my phone goes completely out now make a phone with 20+more mega pixels on front and back and a 7,000 Mah battery then yes I will upgrade till then I’m a-ok

I have the galaxy s6 edge plus and I love it why would I want to down grade my camera with a 16 mega pixels to a 12 mega pixels that’s foolish the only thing the s7 has is a memory card slot that’s it the battery is still the same as the s6 edge plus 3,000 Mah I don’t see what’s so much better with the s7 I really don’t see the better

      • Kim Griffiths

        05/19/2016 at 5:54 am

Well Queenie, I have the S6 Edge+ too and like you, I don’t think that it’s worth the upgrade…especially after just Five months.
But I’ve been very tempted. The camera is about the same (bty, it has nothing to do with the number of pixels as the S7 the pixels are larger therefore letting in more light, but I can’t see any improvement over the S6Edge+ either ).
The reason I was tempted for about 5 minutes (and every time Samsung try to get me to join their upgrade programme), is because the S7 edge is waterproof and that’s a big thing when you live in rainy old London.
Just one more thing, please don’t run your mouth here, it isn’t appropriate and you say that you’re “grown”, well show that maturity and stop letting your temper get the better of you. 🤘✌

The s7 is not waterproof guys it’s water resistant don’t get it twisted, I almost ruined my s7 edge making a 30 second video in the ocean. Besides that the phone is amazing

    • Cory Gunther

      04/26/2016 at 12:30 pm

I’d say get the S7 Edge all the way. Similar experience in terms of size, but better in every other way. Latest versions of Android, will get updates for a year longer, water-resistant, and has a slightly better yet much faster camera.

It isn’t just about the camera quality regarding megapixels, but the speed and accuracy. With the S7 Edge you know you’re getting a good photo every time (like iPhone) rather than the mixed results from the S6 Edge and other older Androids.

Thequeen…pls shut ur mouth..s7 edge has a whooping 3600 maH battery amd it lasts a minimum of 17 hours with normal usage and 15 hrs heavy usage.
The speakers and mic are waterproof as i myself have immersed it in water many times ….and its not about pixel count…s7s camera is like dslr
S7 edge is the best as of now ☺

Stick with the s6 edge plus. The only reason to upgrade would be because the expandable memory and waterproof has come back but that will still be around for the next coming years because Samsung knows their customers love that. With the new update…finally, my battery does much better than when I first purchased the s6 edge plus last year. Again, stick with the s6 edge plus. The customers who have upgraded to the s7 edge for 5 (really 2) reasons know that they have wasted their money, but hey, it’s their money. 😊

I must have a different model. My s6 edge plus does not have an IR Blaster sensor. I have installed multiple apps, all telling me my phone is incompatible…. As for switching to the s7 edge, I’m for it. The s6 edge plus I have, the battery is horrible. It will go from 100% to 30% in the nine hours while I’m at work. That’s with no, or minimal use. I really want the sdcard option back too. I’m switching for sure!

    • AntiQueen

      05/04/2016 at 2:45 pm

No IR Blaster on the s6 Edge plus. I just made the switch a couple of days ago. Totally worth it. The rounded back makes it fit better in your hand too.

Now since the s6 edge plus is cheap is it worth buying?

    • Kim Griffiths

      05/19/2016 at 6:24 am

I wouldn’t call £629 for the 64 GB version “cheap”…and the 64 GB version is probably the best one to buy (no sd card storage ect).
If you can live with 32 GB, then £519 isn’t a bad price for a really great device, but I wouldn’t call it cheap..it just not as expensive.

    05/19/2016 at 1:27 am

wow s7 edge is better and the speakers and microphone are water proof because they have a built in rubber lining for the speaker. The camera has optical stabilization, the s7 edge is the first phone to have a camera like that because the sensor literally adjusts based on internal sensors to keep a picture stable, yes it comes with a 12mp camera but it’s dual pixel so the quality is more like 24mp or that’s how I see it. Personally the optical image stabilization makes an impact on images considering I don’t have to continually autofocus the camera manually and keep my hand ice still to take a good picture. The fingerprint sensor is faster and more efficient. The design is flawless. I can keep coming up with more and more reasons the s7 edge is better but there is literally no reason why it should be an argument with people acting like little kids. IE: The “Queen”

Had the edge 6 for 10 days and loved it. Decided today to get edge 7 instead. The whole camera pixel thing has me kinda worried but other than that I am so excited to get the 7 next week. I will let ya’ll know how it goes!

How is Tom White getting a free tv? I want that deal, as I am buying thru best buy for $299 with 2 yr contract for S7 edge. Please inform me on your deal, it sounds good. Btw, people on here that have the S6 edge plus should be happy, it’s a great phone, but if you actually research the true differences instead of going into defense mode, you will see the real difference between the two phones. I personallY do not believe it’s worth upgrading from the S6 edge plus to the S7 edge, but if you are bumping up from the S4 and have a choice between the two phones, it really is a no brained which one to choose. Please be informed before going on a rant, and some people should really grow up. Would love to know where you are getting your deal Tom White, thanks.

I’d just wait tbh, then again that’s what I always do when the s5 was out I skipped the s6 line and got the s7 edge. might as well wait and see what the s8 line has to offer

Galaxys6edge + is a great fone with everything needed and an absolutely excellent camera. No need to spend any more for rather marginal items that will not be useful.

I just filed an ins. Claim on my s6 edge plus and they are sending me an s7. Will I be getting a good phone? I love my s6 edge plus but the screen is cracked and it’s glitching out and AT&T told me they don’t really make that phone anymore. So they were replacing it with the s7.

I’ve just got s6 plus and tbh the battery needs charged 3x a day. I’ve switched all features off changed wallpaper to black. It’s nothing more than a basic phone setup. Switched off loads of settings & apps and syncing etc. Lovely phone but Not happy can’t use its features coz the poor battery. Since day 1 now had it 10 days and no better…😕
Anyone else have this problem ?

I got Samsung Galaxy s6 edge plus and it has been so owesome. Really love it because it’s super fast and almost have the same stuffs like s7 edge apart from the ip68. So it doesn’t worth changing just for s7 edge. Thanks
