How to Go Back to Your Last Version of Windows from Windows 10

Published

on

400 million people have Windows 10 installed on their machine, but that doesn’t mean they are absolutely thrilled with it. Since the Free Windows 10 Upgrade offer launched in 2015, there have been those unhappy with it. That’s to say nothing of the people who’ve only paid to update their PC recently.

Don’t fret or panic. If you’ve only recently done the upgrade to Windows from Windows 7, Windows 8, you can go back. You can also go back to previous versions of Windows 10 after installing a major update.

Here’s how to go back to Windows 7, Windows 8 and early versions of Windows 10 after you’ve done an upgrade.

Going Back to Windows 7 or Windows 8 The Easy Way

Before we begin, be sure that you’re ready to give up on Windows 10 and go back to your previous operating system, whatever that is.

Previous versions of Windows forced you to restore your PC or tablet from an external back up that you made yourself. Windows 10 is a bit smarter about letting you go back. When you install it, the upgrade saves a copy of your old operating system so that you can go back if you need to. To be clear, this only works for users who have upgraded their Windows 7 and Windows 8 PC to Windows 10 in the last month. Users who performed a clean install of Windows 10 will still need to use the back up they created.

You can go back to previous versions of Windows 10 too.

Turn on your notebook, desktop or tablet. Then press the Start button in the bottom-left corner of your screen.

Tap or click on Settings. It’s in the Start menu just above the power button.

Note that if you in Tablet Mode your Start Menu will look more like what’s below. Touch users should tap on the menu icon in the top-left corner of their screen and select Settings from the menu that slides out on the left.

How to go back to windows 7 from Windows 10 (3)In the Settings app, tap or click on the Update & Security icon.

Now tap or click on the Recovery option in the menu on the far left of your screen. It’s just below the Backup menu item.

Now tap or click on the Get Started button under labeled with whatever previous version of Windows you had installed. This option is entirely specific to what was installed on your PC before. For example, you could see Go Back to Windows 7 instead of what’s in this screenshot. Regardless, tap or click on Get Started. You’ll need your device to be plugged in.

Follow the on-screen prompts and you’ll be back on Windows 7 and Windows 8 within the next few hours.

Remember that users who performed clean installs of Windows 10, not upgrades don’t get this option. They are stuck having to completely restore their PC from any backups they might have created. If you didn’t create any backups before starting the Windows 10 installation process, it’s time to order restore media from your device maker.

Going Back to Windows 7 or Windows 8 The Hard Way

For some of you, it’ll have been more than a month since you used the Free Windows 10 Upgrade Offer to update your machine. If that’s the case, the button for restoring your device back to its older operating system will be missing. Windows 10 only keeps the files needed for going back to Windows 7 and Windows 8 for a month. After that month, it cleans up the device’s storage and deletes the necessary files, figuring you’ve had some time to acclimate to Windows 10 and would like your extra storage back.

external-dvd-drive-4

To go back to Windows 8, Windows 7 and a previous version of Windows 10 you’re going to need to restore your PC from a backup. If your device came with a restore DVD, now is the time to use it. Dell, HP, Lenovo and others all offer ways to get restore media for machines purchased from them. Some device builders make restore media available for download online. Contact support for your PC maker to order restore media, if you don’t have any.

If you like Windows 10 and don’t plan on going back, go to the Storage tool in the System area and clear your temporary files. This will free up that storage space, but also strand you on Windows 10.

What about help with a desktop? There is no section for settings downright like you are showing with a touch pad. I really want to go back to Windows 8 because I am so disappointed with Windows 10. It’s so slow and has been shutting down. Can you help more with a desktop, please? Thanks so much!

If you type “Recovery” in the search box it should display your Recovery program for you to click on. One of the options in this program is to go back to Windows 8. You have 30 days from when you installed 10 to go back. Make sure you back up your files in case it doesn’t work right.

How about if the SETTINGS button doesn’t bring up a window? I can press SETTINGS on start menu all day long and a box appears and closes before I can do anything– in fraction of a second.

know what you mean, after upgrading to 10 , I have major bugs in my windows 7 system. I like the apps on windows 10 and some of the other features. Just getting windows to start up I s a task taking 10 minutes or more.

I wish that there had been something about not being able to use some older files or games. Most of my games are on the old side but I still love to play them. I couldn’t open but only about 2-3 games out of about 15. Very frustrating. I even got locked out of the keyboard once and had to restart. I still don’t know what I did. I am more then happy to go back to my Windows 7 Professional. Good luck to those who like Windows 10.

Same here, wish I’d known it was going to delete my programs and task bar favorites, I would have stayed with W7…sucks…and when I upgraded it didn’t give me the option to Go Back to W7 in the Restore menu…now I’m stuck with this POS with only half the Apps on the Menu screen, half of them are gray so they don’t work…

Since the installation of windows 10, I have not been able to do anything without the dog on screen disappearing and reappearing constantly. after a few minutes of this tom foolery, the screen goes completely black with no task bar or icons displayed. How do I go back to my reliable windows 7?

I installed Windows 10 on my HP Laptop and it ran fine. I cannot say I love the interface. Windows 7 is still better for most purposes. I also installed it on a Dell 7010 Tablet. That machine crashed constantly. I ran Recovery to revert to Windows 8.1 and now my tablet will not boot. I am going to have to do a clean install and reinstall all the programs. This is ridiculous.

It’s understandable from Microsoft PC business perspective, but from user friendliness Windows 7 professional or ultimate have been far best than any other windows. You don’t expect me start looking for each and every single document I previous made. Parallel to that, funny web pages keep on opening up uncontrolled

You know what would ave been great? If they would have spent years developing a better format for Drivers. It’s not like i went to using a competitors OS like Linux or Mac. That I can’t use my recording software or several other programs because of driver issues with a Windows OS at this point is inexcusable and ridiculous. No one cares about the start menu. We want to be able to do our stuff.

I upgraded yesterday and now it will not let me go back to win 7, even the win tech could not get 7 back.
What a piece of s–t. Nothing I like about this new system, it is made for teenyboppers and music freaks and not as a serious computer users tool. Microsoft did it again and let the kids make the decisions on how to run the business. So sad, I think I will be done with Microsoft after this fiasco. I own 5 pc’s but as each one dies it will be replaced with an apple. Something I never thought I would say

Some people can’t find the Windows Live Mail after updating so try typing Windows Live Mail in the search bar & the program should be one of the options. Before clicking on it to open it, try right clicking on icon & see if you get the options to either pin it to the start menu or the task bar so you have access to it easily.

    Can someone help ?

I restored my Win7 from the Win10 “GoBack” method.

After about 15 minutes, Win7 launched but the screen’s frozen with two tabs open. No mouse control [even when a USB mouse is added]. No keyboard action. No CTL ALT DEL.

Been sitting that way for hours.

Even powered the desktop down with power button … only to be brought back to same ‘frozen screen’.

Man EVERYBODY should read some of these comments and reviews from folks like us.B4 they down load windows 10.I read a shitload of reviews/comments from apparently Microsoft and everything I read said nothing but good and how much better i would be along with how much faster my games are going to be and everything a car salesman would tell you to not only excite you and make you feel like your getting the best of the best for “FREE”,,AWE! be real folks.you gotta know nothing is for nothing and most of all there is No such thing as the word Free without a catch somewhere,Then to top it off with the unknown knowledge that yea Cant just open the control panel and undo what yea don’t like because getting to the control panel has been taken away as well.I feel like i was Suckered by Microsoft into excepting something that disappoints and the easiest ability to go back is to throw my fkn laptop n smash it with distress and buy another computer.I will tell yea if that happens the new one wont have anything called windows 10,,I have better luck getting rid of a virus than i do using win10,My message is if you are OK with what you have, don’t think things will get better by changing,The complaints definitely out way the compliments with this piece of sh-hit win 10.

    Hi,
I just did a System restore from Windows 10 to Windows 7. Didn’t like Windows 10.
Went through all the required steps to revert and now getting the error message “Windows error recovery” window on startup.
There are 2 options to choose from. “Launch Startup Repair(Recommended)” and “Start Windows Normally”
I have run the start up repair however it says “Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically”.
I tried starting normally and brings me back to “Windows error recovery” window.
I have tried the restore point option, however it says there are no restore points. I did this prior to upgrading to Windows 10. Not sure why its not there.
I am not sure if anyone has experienced this after trying to go back to Windows 7 from 10 within that 30 day window.
Does anyone know a fix for this without having to start from scratch?
    Yvonne

        Hi Patricia,

I ended up having to do a factory restore. Lost everything. I posted everything in the link below of what I went through.

You can access the factory restore through the start up repair options once it is done telling you it can’t repair it automatically(system recovery option). There were two options to restore. With or without data and with did not work for me.

If you can get to the F8 menu when starting up your computer. Just tap that button repeatedly as soon as you turn it on then you may be able to save all your stuff. That menu wouldnt pop up for me.

Hope you have better luck then I did.

Let me know if I can clarify anything for you.

Windows 10 upgraded did not bring my Internet Explorer Favorites into the new Explorer and I don’t see anyway to do that–it has an option to import them from another browser only. I would assume that they would bring the old favorites into the new version. How do I get the old favorites? Do I need to go back to Windows 8?

    • Mary Ann

      08/26/2015 at 8:04 pm

The new browser is called Edge (the E icon is a little different) if you type Internet Explorer in the search section, your old Internet Explorer icon should be displayed, likely at the top of the list. If you right click on it, choose to pin it on your task bar so you can access it easily then you’ll have your favourites to use again.

What a waste of time. If I had half a brain knowing that Microsoft windows new releases are always buggy, I would have done a clean install and made the system a dual boot. I like every one else did an upgrade. Of course, even though the files are still there, (windows says they are not) I cant revert back.

    08/16/2015 at 1:33 pm

Waste my flaming time. Windows 10 is a dog. Too many of my applications would not work properly after upgrading from windows 7. I followed the prompts to reinstall windows 7 and now my PC is dead. I can’t get any life out of it. I can’t even get a screen prompt to be able to get into the Bios to do any checking. Thanks Microsoft, for nothing. My weekend totally wasted on a flaming PC that was working fine before windows 10 and now won’t work at all. Maybe I’ll send you the bill so I can get someone else to waste their time trying to fix it for me. Totally unimpressed.

every time I try to recover to windows 7 it tells me I need to remover a user it is usually the one I am logged as. any ideas?

  35. Eric

    08/18/2015 at 1:23 pm

The only way I finally got rid of windows 10, was to do a complete reboot and reload of windows 7 using the original start up discs. This took a few goes as I kept keeping error messages relating to ‘windows 10’ blocking what I was trying to do and the mouse and keyboard not working due to window 10 being there in the first place. I expected to lose all my old files but they had actually been relocated to a “windows.old” folder, so I still had them. Make sure you have an external copy of any files you want to keep first in case this is not always the case. I am now gradually reloading my extra software back onto my PC. Is a slow process but at least I know my PC will work after this.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Was this a major scam on consumers?! I went with the free download and when I dropped it and went back to 8.1 I could not get on my computer.it will not take my password and I did not change my password! And I have tried everything. My computer I purchased 8 months ago! I am so mad I could spit nails.

    08/21/2015 at 7:59 pm

I too, went back to 8.1, via the go back to 8.1 option from Windows 10. Everything was real “buggy” and would freeze, especially in the Microsoft Edge (new version to “look” like IE).
However, the bugginess and freezing has carried back over to my original 8.1. Nothing is working correctly, my Internet Explorer is freezing, Not Responding, Cant find Web Address, etc…etc…etc…. I had NONE of these problems prior to “upgrading” to Windows 10. I don’t know what I can do short of clearing out the whole system and reinstalling from original set up discs that came with my Toshiba Satellite Laptop. Does ANYONE have any ideas? I have so far disabled some processes and services (including GTWS or something like that , that is supposed to have been Windows 10 upgrade offer app). I did a system restore to the restore point I created prior to installing the upgrade. Still everytime I get online (IE), it will work for 5 minutes or so, and then I have to restart computer to unfreeze it. Once it told me to turn on TLS 2.1, 2.3, etc… but when I looked under advanced settings….they WERE on. I can’t believe they duped us all again!

hello jonathanandwynn. I had the same problem, in the end I got a young man to completely wipe the system, It still wouldn’t start so he had to fix that too. He has fixed it but I will Never do that again! it’s a case of ‘Look before you leap’. Good luck with your problems I hope you get it fixed soon x

I haven’t had time yet to wipe mine out (will do this weekend). More and more problems keep surfacing. Today my Thunderbird email program has locked out and most of my “favorites” bar in IE 10 are inaccessible. I have checked and unchecked so many things now in services and internet options that I fear I have done more damage. I hope to get everything back to normal this weekend. Good luck to everyone else. Hope we all can recoup our “normality” with our pc’s and laptops. “Death to Microsoft Windows 10” ….lol

I did the Windows 10 update last week and everything was fine for a couple of days. Then the PC had trouble booting and would shut down without warning so I decided to revert back to 8.1 yesterday which seemed to go fine. Now I try to start up the pc today and it will not boot. Just get an alarm sounding and wont boot up. I took the back up of the install on DVD and tried inserting that to do a new install but no joy..still the alarm. Can anyone help??

      Hi Karl,
Unfortunately you are probably going to have to have your system wiped like the rest of us. Wish I had found this thread prior to updating. I wouldn’t have done it.

I upgraded on line for Toshiba satellite laptop from 7 to 10, didn’t like it so read the reviews about reverting back All said it was quick and easy. It seemed to revert back but now will not start . I just get the option repair or start normally like you get if you do not shut down properly. Tried to repair several times . It seemed to do things and repair some things but still not fire up. I have used the f8 option on start up and can get the safe mode but will not load full system including no internet Looks like I will have to go back to factory settings

Tried updating to Windows 10. Should of read these comments first. Screen went dark and can’t do anything with it. Been told Apple makes a far better product…going to an apple store and buy regardless of cost. Windows SUCKS PERIOD. FIX the issues and stop trying to edit this crap for games and rearrange the appearance of the home page, et al. Does MS own Norton? or McAfee? or another anti-virus SW? Sometimes it looks like a con to get more $$ from users.

I had a similar problem to everyone here. Windows 10 didn’t recognise my monitor driver so it used a generic one which made everything stretched as the resolution was off. I had to reatore to windows 7 to fix this. After quite a simple and quick process my laptop booted up fine in windows 7 until it reached the login page. I have no access to my keyboard or mouse even though they work in the BIOS. I can only assume there’s another driver issue. Seems like Microsoft punishing us for not liking their new product.

Wow. Windows 10 was SO glitchy for me. I have a PC, and kept seeing all the ads for how GREAT Windows 10 was supposed to be, and it MAY be…just not yet. It is still too new. I went back to Windows 8.1 3 days after downloading.

  44. RancorKeeper

    08/27/2015 at 9:30 am

Updated to 10 from 8.1 because of the nagging advertisement pop up. The programs I would use most would not work properly or at all – first noticed that windows media player, which I loved because it would now play FLAC, wouldn’t rip cds as mp3 like it used to on 8.1 – then ITunes wouldn’t work. So I said F-this and followed the instructions to go back to 8.1. When everything was said and done I was happy at first because WMP acted like it used to and I was able to use ITunes without a problem, I thought all was fine until I went to the App screen and it is completely locked. I have to hit the windows key on my keyboard to get back to the desktop. Then I noticed that randomly the screen would freeze anywhere that was idle for a while. Hitting the windows key does undo that but My apps screen is unusable and I fear the apps themselves are unusable. No restore point before the windows 10 install – so right now I’m just pulling all my files off my computer (music, videos, and docs) and am going to try a refresh to see if that takes care of it.

    I’m very upset.

    • RancorKeeper

      08/27/2015 at 9:41 am

…and is there any way possible to get rid of the windows 10 upgrade advertisement? It’s like a slap in the face every time now! I deleted the update responsible and hid the notification, but it popped back up within 24 hours.

I am trying to revert back to Windows 7 and will never upgrade again. When I click on settings and then get to the spot where you can click to revert back to windows 7, my settings totally locks up. I can’t do anything at all. I just have to close the window. A box to tell them why I’m reverting back does not appear. I’m not having any other issues with my computer. Well, besides the fact that I hate 10. I have retried several times and get the same result. Do you have any suggestions? I know my 30 days isn’t up yet, but I’m close. I hate 10. There are tons of bugs to be worked out and I don’t like the feel.

I cannot even access any part of my laptop after the “upgrade” to windows 10. My laptop is frozen on the loading screen and has been for days. I have rebooted too many times to count. I have even removed the battery and unplugged it for days at a time. Nothing is working. Windows 10 killed my laptop. I can’t afford to buy two laptops in less than a year. Now I went back to window 8, however,I lost some of the apps like calendar, etc. But the most annoying thing is my mail icon did not respond. I have to go to google search to type outlook.com and get my mails. Anyone knows how to get the shortcut back please?

RID YOUR SYSTEM OF THE WINDOWS 10 UPDATE NOTIFICATION:

To get rid of the “Windows 10 Update Notification,” simply make your own uninstaller:

    ____________________________________________________

    1. open Notepad

    2. copy and paste this in:
    ____________________________________________________

    wusa /uninstall /KB:3021917

    wusa /uninstall /KB:3050265

    wusa /uninstall /KB:3035583

    wusa /uninstall /KB:2952664

    wusa /uninstall /KB:2976978

    wusa /uninstall /KB:2990214

    wusa /uninstall /KB:3068708

    wusa /uninstall /KB:3022345

    wusa /uninstall /KB:2952664

    wusa /uninstall /KB:3075851

ECHO All done. Press any key to exit.

    PAUSE

    EXIT

    ______________________________________________________

    3. SAVE AS [name].bat

    4. double click the new file and follow the prompts

    5. you are now a geek ;)

P.S. Keep a CLOSE EYE on future updates from Microsoft as they have sunk to a new low and are simply renumbering future “updates” to get past anyone who has opted to hide any of the above updates so that they never have to see them or install them again! Always do a Google search to find out exactly what the new updates are BEFORE you allow them to be installed. However, you can always uninstall any future “nast Windows 10 nagware” using the same method described above.

Stay on Windows 7! It’s the best OS ever!

My windows 7 professional was working perfectly well and then I made the biggest mistake in all my life by downloading windows 10. I was initially bombarded with add ons and unable to use ebay for them continually blocking out the page. Roxio creator wouldn’t work and when I went on my image garden to print onto a disc windows 10 version would only print labels to stick on. 27 of my apps where unavailable and numerous other things didn’t work including not able to use sidebar. I took it to an engineer 6 times to keep putting things right at a total cost of £90 but there where still problems, Another engineer sorted 2 further problems out at £20 and it left me with 4 remaining problems. I contacted a relation of mine who works for a national company and he tried to sort the remaining problems out remotely. After an hour he told me that 3 problems could not be rectified while I was running windows 10. I told him to revert me back to 7 after 28 days and it wouldn’t allow him to do it. Last weekend he visited my house and after 5 hours got me back onto the fantastic windows 7 professional. Please, please, please do not go anywhere near windows 10. Gerald.

I was very unhappy with Win10. Now that I have returned to Win7, my system restore is messed up and I cannot get updates. The repair is quite extensive for the average person. Why was this not anticipated? why do you think changing access to your files and programs is an upgrade?

Microfost is not a friendly company. The same i think about lenovo.
They have made that my computer is not much worth at the moment and they both want money for my stupit decision about installing windows 10 now. I haven’t got any possibility to return to windows 7 since the beginning of the windows 10 installation. Now it is about two months after and i am really unhappy, more and more with every new day. I have made some callculations about my cost connecting with this stuipd decision if i would like to return to windows 7 and it is too much money for me. So i must be still with windows 10. When i am trying to log to microsft to tell them my opinian i am finding there only an insolent request “FIRST YOU MUST TELL US YOUR DATE OF BIRTHDAY”. Can you imagine such a thing???? What should happen if you click ‘Go back to Windows 7’ i.e. what screen should appear? what process is followed? how do you know it is actually going back to Windows 7?

The reason I ask is that, as with all the software on my PC, it seems to have hung and now nothing appears to be happening. Obviously I do not want to do a cold restart of the PC in case it is actually doing something.

I will leave my PC on for a few hours to see if anything happens and failing that will reboot.

If it does not downgrade does anyone have any ideas how I can do this without reinstalling everything from scratch?

    Thanks.

I think Microsoft should give up. I’ve been using its products for the better part of 20+ years and every time they get something right with an OS they got to mess it up with a promising new OS What a load of Horse Crap. They haven’t had a decent OS since Win7. That means 3 consecutive flops one after another since.
I purchased a $2400 laptop. After trying to get into Win8 and not succeeding and then finding out I can’t install Win7 because of some damn protocol in newer PC’S and not being able to return said laptop I’ve been hating every moment I’ve spent on it. Now Win10 cones along with a promissory of something akin to Win 7 I’m naturally ecstatic at the thought of again enjoying working with a PC. So along come my update to Win10. It looks OK seems to work good but a portion of my drivers won’t work, specifically my net adapter. My Internet is always crashing and it’s getting worse by the day. I’ve got to reboot and it takes forever I get a message stating there was a problem and windows needs to restart again, Driver Power State Failure. then I can surf the net again. A few hours. Maybe a few more and I need to restart the process again. I’m tired and fed up with this BS .
And I can’t revert back to Win 8.1 another PS
So I would like to know 1 why can I not install any OS I wish on MY PC and 2 When is MS going to stop playing with us and think that we are going to keep taking this shit from them? Maybe legal justification should be sought? This kind of treatment costs us the consumer many $$$ and hours of wasted time and effort on a useless OS

First problem with Windows 10: Limited Wi-Fi connectivity due to an incompatible driver for my network adapter. Manufacturer will not update it and Microsoft’s generic driver doesn’t provide a stable connected. I’m surprised I’m even able to get online right now!

Second problem with Windows 10: Critical Error: Start Menu stopped working.

My computer came with Windows 8 and, despite the poor reviews, it actually worked. Windows 8.1 slowed everything down and Windows 10 is unusable. It is always best to stay with the operating system that the computer came with. Always.

Made the stupid decision to try Windows 10 and it is terrible. Had to re-create all my Outlook email accounts, had to manually re-enter all my favorites and then, the next morning, all that work was lost and it wanted me to do it all over again. Found the recovery back to 8.1 and I THINK almost everything is recovered except it deleted ALL my favorite links. Years of saving links and they are now all GONE. This has to be one of the worse rollouts any software company has ever tried. Perhaps we should all get a class action lawsuit against Microsoft.!

I installed win 10 cause it kept asking and asking and asking, sorta like a mate that just annoys you enough that you give in and do it. and low and behold when i was the administrator in windows 7 i wasnt the administrator in windows 10, endless sign ins all to find i wasnt considered the administrator anymore. so microsoft did a work around and created a new user for me. this worked until that user wasnt considered an administrator anymore and wouldnt let me do much of anything. so i tried to go back to 7, but it said my files were gone and of course im not the administrator so i cant anyway, so i erased it lost all my files and did a fresh install of windows 7 and guess what im the administrator but now it says my product number isntr legal<—ty microsoft you are amazing at figuring ways up to make your software illegal. i got another product number t work outta the 10 or so i bought, nevertheless i now cant get it to update due to windows update errors and readiness tool foopahs. allo the stuff it did when i first bought it and figured out how to get it to work 10 years ago now im doing again..ty microsoft i guess this is another way for me to give in and just upgrade again, but i refuse…ive decided ill just goto apple if i cant get it to work.

I downloaded it onto my surface pro, conned into thinking it would be better than 8.1, I should have read all these posts, and true to form things got rearranged, (a bit like buying a new car and some bright spark thinks that the clutch should be on the roof instead of the floor!) I preferred 8.1 so went back to it. I had only had windows 10 for a week. But now that I went back to 8.1, I cannot use calendar, mail or even update my account picture. Apparently links are moderated here. I had posted you2 url’s of a list, which ghost was not on, but paragon was, magiciso and more with comparisons for features.

Just search “best os imaging software for windows 7”, in google. You will find it close to the top.

Here is is again without the urls:

This is why you image your OS and have backups. Learn to do it and then fix your issue in 5 min. Maybe less with a flash drive. ;)
Some, I’ve had success with Paragon in the past where others have failed.
Then there is Ghost, which I still use too, but I have had issues with failing to restore Win-7, which leave me to look elsewhere for dependability.
      url removed
Nortons community website end of url:/en/forums/how-activate-ghost-15-windows-81-and-probably-windows-10
PS. I wouldn’t touch the MagicISO with a 10 foot pole.

The going back feature locked up my customer’s computers. He had to bring it in for repairs, not having the time to mess around without the mouse or keyboard working and all. I think Microsoft made a big mistake automatically installing on business class machines set up for dedicated tacks. Code ran before in Windows 7 fine. The machine was there for that specific task.

Windows 10 has destroyed my computer. I became ill after the upgrade and didn’t know I only had 30days to bring Windows 7 back. Windows 10 erased my backups and recovery, a pc game I had been playing for six years, documents and photos, etc. I finally was able to restore back to the “out of the box” factory settings. Now I’m finding it difficult to use any websites at all. Facebook shows me no timeline and I can’t see my friends and family. I live in the country and it was the only way I could talk to them! Netflix and Youtube will not go to full screen so I cannot watch movies. I am cut off from everyone, cannot play games or watch movies. I am ill and disabled and this was all I had. Windows 10 needs to tell people that it won’t work on older computers and laptops without touch. They need to find some way to replace all of our files. I had tax returns and income statements and letters all gone. I would never have resorted to a factory reset had Windows 10 allowed me to get my Windows 7 back. This is complete thievery. They are hacking everything from everyone and no one even cares. Oh and they stole my Microsoft Essentials too! By forcing everyone to use Windows 10 they get to erase everything you hold dear, and you’ll have to pay for antivirus software that you didn’t need before, as Microsoft Essentials is one of the best there is. I’m rambling but I need my computer! I am bedridden half of the time. I use it for a library, a dictionary, movies, photos, a social life. And I don’t care if they had you sign a EULA saying it was okay to download. There should be a warning that older computers will have all their backups, restore points, etc. erased. I WANT my computer back! I will sue and I will write letters to the media; whatever it takes.

Windows 10 updated by itself while I was reading on my ASUS laptop/reader. I tried it out for about 3 weeks, didn’t like it and wanted to go back to 8.1 – so today, I was able to do the ‘easy way’ reversal.. with only one glitch. NOW I cannot open any of my books on my reader! My Kindle app opens up… then I keep getting he message: “the application encountered an unexpected error. Please restart the application.[108]” I have restarted the whole thing, even the laptop.. does anyone know what is causing this?? It worked just fine prior to windows 10 installation.. and it opened in the windows 10 (although it froze up a lot – at least it opened). Any help is appreciated.

I converted from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it crashed my computer and now all I get is a gray screen. Microsoft Technical support is still trying to find ways to recover it. We’ve been at it for hours with no luck

I did not approve to let windows 10 on my computer and it did simply because I made the mistake of having windows do updates. After going through hell with this crappy system, now my windows live mail is causing problems and can’t remove emails. This is hell. What can I do to get my windows live mail to work properly?

You hacked into my desktop. You hacked into my cell phone. I did not approve updating to Windows 10. I refused ever pop-up that appeared on my screen. What didn’t you understand? Don’t you know the meaning of “NO”? I did not give permission to Microsoft to transfer my cell phone information onto my desktop. I am reporting this “hacking” to the FCC. How dare you take over my computer. I want Windows 7 reinstalled immediately. You can reinstall WIndows 7 the same way you ILLEGALLY INSTALLED WINDOWS 10. I guess you spent so much time developing a new system and it proved to be such a failure that you are ILLEGALLY FORCING IT UPON UNSUSPECTING USERS OF WINDOWS 7.

I am am so thankful I found this site. I was on the point of giving in to the continual pop-ups. I have found that you must never leave your computer running when not using it. Fortunately I caught MS just trying to start downloading when I left my PC running. I have found – and I hope it works till end of July – is not to use Google as your browser. Using Mozilla Firefox I have not had any W10 pop-ups to date.

Windows 10 installed on 29/05/16 when I was distracted and most of my apps have disappeared. I am unable to downgrade to windows 7 as there is no option in the update & security\recovery settings. Windows.old directory is still there but it looks as if I will have to do a factory reset.

I “upgraded”to win 10 a while ago. My pc slowed to a crawl, it couldnt find my storage drives, even when pointed there, start menu died, cortana completely stopped working, then my SSD somehow got corrupted.

needless to say i just reinstalled 7 from my disk, and it went back to working normally(albeit lost most of my saves for steam games) but i just pointed the pc to the libraries and the games worked fine otherwise.

so 10 wont be on my pc anytime soon again.

The Windows 10 Upgrade Offer doesn’t wrap up until the end of July. After that the pop-ups will go away on both Windows 8 and Windows 7.

“Windows 10 only keeps the files needed for going back to Windows 7 and Windows 8 for a month. After that month, it cleans up your device’s storage and deletes the necessary files, figuring you’ve had some time to acclimate to Windows 10 and would like your extra storage back.”

I call BS on this feeble bit of cr*p! MS deviously & craftily removed the ability to go back because it SUITS THEM to only have to support ONE operating system. MS does NOT give a rat’s-arse if you have storage space– get real!! The “removing the ladder from the pool”, is by DESIGN.

As far as the issues with this horror-show that is 10 being foisted onto people’s PC’s WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT (& yes, it IS happening– after MS placed the upgrade into the “recommended updates”)– I think there ought to be a class-action to allow suing MS for the costs of hiring people like me to clean up THEIR mess.

Lastly, Winaero has the old Win 7 games available for download. Google it.

P.S. Win 7 is supported until 2020. After that (or before), switch to Linux Mint Mate.

I lost my calendar from Windows8.1 which had so much info on it as well as special things that happened before my husband passed away in February. I feel so angry because I did not choose to install Windows 10…it just started installing automatically one day when I walked away from the computer to make a cup of coffee and I couldn’t stop the installation. The same thing happened to a friend of mine…which was even worse for her because she is trying to run a small business which is predominately done on the internet. We both hate Windows 10.

So I followed the directions to go back to windows 7 but when my laptop went to start up it couldn’t and had me run a repair but said it couldn’t fix it or start up. Has anyone else had this issue when trying to go back to windows 7 from windows 10?

Okay so I am with most of the comments here. I was hype for windows 10 cause they made it seem so amazing but I was just completely disappointed in it and regretted ever installing it. I use a really horrible HP EliteBook 6930p laptop(brand new), but yes, it was far more than a month ago. I just didn’t take the time to go back to the previous windows I had before this installment. I have had this laptop for a while now and I misplaced the DVD. Is that the only other option I have at this point to go back? I figured there would be plenty of ways I could do this but I may be wrong lol If that’s not the case then can I get another DVD somehow?

I got tired of the upgrade message popping up and asking me to upgrade so I finally gave in and did and I have regret it and now I am pissed because I hate windows and now certain features are no longer working on Skype and other programs and my mouse stops working constantly and having configuration issues.I I tried to roll back to windows 7 after about 10 days only and it said that I couldn’t and my files had been deleted. They lied about having 30 days and I then tried reformatting my computer and re-installing windows 7 from scratch and it didn’t allow me to do that either. Forcing us to use windows 10 and not allowing me to re-install windows 7 from scratch is wrong and should be deemed illegal. Microsoft needs to be sued over this. They have messed up so many peoples’ computers and are not being held accountable. I bought a new computer as well which said on the description that I can use windows 7 or 10 so that’s why I bought it because I wanted windows 7 but when i turned it on I realized it was running on windows 10 and I didnt even bother trying to return it because 7 months or so had gone by since I bought it even though I had never used it cause I was using my old lap top. Now I have 2 computers running on windows 10 and I’m beyond angry. I am thinking of buying another computer that runs on windows 7 but there are very few left in the market. Microsoft has no respect for their customers. They screwed us over.

Anyone with a product key (label on laptop) can go back. All you have to do is get an image of 7 online. Doesn’t matter which, as long as it is a true copy. Netbook owners- your label may be under the bottom cover.

After you successfully install Win 7, go to right-click>computer>properties. From there, follow prompts to activate.

Any help with getting Windows 10 to let you do a clean install? It won’t let me install on any of the partitions and if I I delete a partition and add a new one it won’t let me install it there either!

My computer automatically updated to Windows 10, but a program I need to log into for work was not compatible. I successfully went back to Windows 7 but now the program I use is compatible to Windows 10. Can I go back? Or is it too late? In my windows update screen, my computer says “Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready” but to restart my PC. I have but it restarts and still has Windows 7. Any suggestions?
