16 Common Windows 10 Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

Millions of users have either upgraded to or purchased new PCs that come with Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system. The operating system is the best Microsoft has offered in a while, mixing things that users loved about Windows 8 and the utility of Windows 7. It hasn’t all been a success, though. There are some common Windows 10 problems that still crop up daily.

Microsoft plans to release new features and software changes to address Windows 10 problems for years to come. For example, the debut of the Windows 10 Creators Update is set for this spring. Every month, it’s also releasing new fixes to address issues. Until those fixes are available, here are some relatively easy ways to address the problems some people are running into frequently.

Windows 10 Problems

Common Windows 10 Problems: Windows 10 Battery Problems

If you suddenly find your notebook, tablet or 2-in-1’s battery doesn’t last as long as it should, it may be time to turn on Windows 10’s Battery Saver feature.

Tap or click on the battery button in the right side of the Taskbar.

Either dim your device’s display by tapping the button on the right or turn on Battery Saver to dim your screen and cut down on the notifications and extras running in the background.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Fix Windows 10 Game Streaming Problems

The new Xbox on Windows app allows users to stream their gaming sessions directly from their Xbox One to their PC. This is particularly helpful when you’re in another room and don’t want to move to play your favorite games. Sometimes you’re going to have issues with game streaming. Specifically, you’ll run into some choppiness in the video.

Windows 10 on Xbox One (7)

Test Xbox One game streaming by opening the Xbox app.

Now go to the Connect area and look at the signal indicator to the left of your device’s name. If it’s red you will definitely run into some streaming issues.

To fix Windows 10 game streaming problems, first connect your Xbox One directly to your wireless router to see if that’s the problem. If it is, your wireless router may be too slow to handle the feature. You’ll need to purchase a new one or stay wired to your network when using game streaming. You could also try adjusting the video quality of your stream to put less stress on your network.

Also, a lot of people seem to forget that streaming requires that the game be digital or you have your physical copy already in the disc drive.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Fix Windows 10 Camera App

Windows 10 has a camera app that lets you capture pictures with your device’s built-in camera. Sometimes the camera app will get stuck, leaving you without the ability to switch between multiple cameras on your device or capture a photo. If this happens, close the Camera app and look for other apps that might be using the camera.

Common Windows 10 Problems: How to Fix Windows 10 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If you’re having serious issues with Windows 10 after an upgrade, you can always have the operating system delete itself and reinstall without removing your files.

Click or tap on the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen.

Tap or click on Settings. Tap or click on Update & Recovery. Tap or click on Recovery. Tap or click on Reset This PC.

Whether you choose to delete all of your files along with Windows 10 is up to you. Once done, deleting, Windows 10 will install itself again. This should fix any issues you have with the operating system. Now that if you upgraded your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC to Windows 10, you’ll also have the option to go back to your previous operating system.

Common Windows 10 Problems: How to Fix Windows 10 Apps

Windows 10’s different apps are cool and new, but some of them still have issues. A few will crash on you consistently right now.

Try closing the app by tapping or clicking on the X in the top right corner of the app. If you’re in Tablet Mode, place your finger at the top edge of your screen and drag the app towards the bottom of your screen.

Now reopen it.

Go to the Windows Store to reinstall an app if you continue to have issues with it not working correctly or loading.

Common Windows 10 Problems: How to Add Music to Microsoft Groove

Windows Media Player is still around in Windows 10, but Microsoft isn’t encouraging anyone to use it. Instead, it’s rebuilt Xbox Music for the operating system. Groove Music allows users to stream music from Microsoft servers or play music that they already own. To add songs to Groove Music, drop them in the Music folder on your PC.

If you don’t want to move your music files, open Groove Music.

Click or tap on the Settings cog in the bottom left corner of the app. Tap or click on the Choose Where We Look for Music link.

Common Windows 10 Problems: OneDrive Files Are Missing

For Windows 10, Microsoft went back to the drawing board on OneDrive, its online storage service. In Windows 8.1, users could store things on their OneDrive account and have tiny placeholder files for browsing that content on their PC. That’s gone on Windows 10.

Read: Is Microsoft OneDrive Worth Buying?

To see all the files stored on your OneDrive account you’ll need to have those files sync to your PC. You can also view them all at OneDrive.com. That site is also the best place for monitoring how much free storage space you have left.

Common Windows 10 Problems: How to Open Web Pages in Internet Explorer

Microsoft Edge is the new replacement for Internet Explorer. The company says that it’s faster, more touch friendly and easier to use than the two versions of Internet Explorer the company included in Windows 8.1. Over time, Microsoft Edge should become more reliable, but right now it’s very, very buggy on some sites.

If a site continuously gives you issues in Microsoft Edge, tap or click on the three dots in the top-right corner.

Select Open in Internet Explorer.

How to Use Hey Cortana with Windows 10 (1)

Common Windows 10 Problems: Cortana Doesn’t Work

We’ll have to wait for Microsoft to address some of the issues with Cortana not responding when you tap or click on the microphone icon in the Taskbar. If your problem is that she isn’t hearing you well when you give audio commands, try going into Cortana’s settings using the Notebook Icon on the left side of her Window. Adjust for volume again, spend some time adding your voice print if you’re in a reasonably quiet space.

Cortana isn’t available in every country yet, which would explain why you might be missing the personal assistant. Even if Cortana is available in your region, some features may not be.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Can’t Edit Documents in Word Mobile & Office 365

Microsoft shocked the world when it announced that it’d give away access to its Office Mobile apps. So many people took advantage of the apps in testing that many forgot they aren’t entirely free. Officially, Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile are only free to users with a device that has a screen size smaller than 10.1 inches.

Every one else needs an Office 365 subscription.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Movies & TV Won’t Stream Video

Microsoft’s new Movies & TV app allows users to stream the content they’ve purchased or store it locally for playback. The former is useful if you really want to start watching something immediately. Local playback is great for planes, trains and other situations where connecting to Microsoft’s servers isn’t a possibility.

Even with recent updates, sometimes Movies & TV simply won’t start streaming the content that users have purchased. When this happens, close the app by clicking on the X in the top-right corner of your screen. Touch users should swipe their finger downward from the top edge of their screen and tap the Close button in the right corner.

Starting the app up again should fix the issue.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Start Menu Won’t Open

There are some problems that have plagued Windows 10 since its launch in 2015. Windows 10’s Start Menu may be both touch and keyboard-friendly, but it has big issues with reliability on some systems. Often times, it’ll take longer than it should loading. On rare occasions, it just won’t load at all.

If this is happening to you, try restarting your device. If it keeps happening, check out What to Do When the Windows 10 Start Menu Won’t Open.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Microsoft Edge Won’t Open Web Pages

Sometimes, Microsoft Edge fails to open a web page that you’ve navigated to before without issue. When this happens, try creating an In-Private Tab by clicking on the three dots in the address bar and selecting In-Private Tab.

Now navigate to the page that didn’t work before. This is a temporary fix until Microsoft addresses some of the issues still affecting the operating system.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Can’t Get Sound

If you’re trying to listen to music or watch a video, but don’t get any sound from your PC, start by clicking on the speaker icon on the right side of the Taskbar at the bottom of your screen. First check the volume, then click on any arrows you might see that allow you to switch which device you are sending sound too. (Note that this only surfaces if you have Bluetooth or a second set of speakers connected.)

Definitely, try restarting your device.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Missing Restore Media (New)

Microsoft designed the Windows 10 Recovery Tools to keep users from having to reinstall their operating system from flash drives and DVDs. In most situations, that’s exactly how it behaves. Sometimes that’s not the case, though. You may be informed that you’re missing the necessary media to refresh your PC when trying to refresh or restore.

Read: How to Reset Windows 10 Notebooks, Desktops and Tablets

If this happens to you, you’ll need to download recovery media from the company that made your notebook, desktop or tablet. Some companies will let you download a copy free of charge. Others may charge you.

Common Windows 10 Problems: Can’t Download Apps from the Windows Store

The Windows Store lets you download or purchase as many apps as you want, but it doesn’t allow you to install them on as many PCs as it once did. In fact, the store now includes the Xbox One in the 10 devices that you can install apps on.

Read: How to Delete Devices from Your Microsoft Account

Once you reach that 10 device limit you’ll need to go to Account.Microsoft.com to remove one of your older devices.

Good luck using Windows 10.

Be very careful if you rollback-I couldn’t get on the Internet after 7 hours of trying so I decided to revert to Windows 7-After the first reboot I found both my Windows 7 & Windows 10 installation files had been corrupted.

my problem is with Edge browser, I went to a T.V. site, as i picked a show, a pop-up opened saying a 333 error, blue screen, and a bunch or outher stuff…. Have to use task manage to close the window, now everytime i open edge it goes back to that “warning”

I have the same issue and I am unsure to solve it. Luckily I downloaded Chrome prior to this issue starting and can utilize Chrome with no issues. Edge did not seem compatible with various sites. But now I am unable to use it all because as soon as I open it, it starts an alarm with a pop up that asks if the time is correct and to call a number to fix the issue. Have to forceclose it with task manager.

So many issues, I don’t know where to start. 1) Start button doesn’t work. 2) Microsoft Edge, doesn’t work. 3) Tried resetting the device, only to say that all files have been removed. 4) Volume works sometimes.
I’ve tried all the fixes out there, nothing works. I’m so starting to regret this “upgrade”. Why can’t Microsoft launch a product once it has been fully tested and all bugs fixed? So frustrating

Having the very same problem and it’s EXTREMELY agitating! I even had troubleshooting “fix” the problem (https://www.kapilarya.com/fix-windows-media-player-has-stopped-working), but that lasted a half hour before it started closing down again. I have WMP set as default player, as I find it very user-friendly. The new player with the update is useless, having much less options. Microsoft really can’t get this problem under control? Smart, technologically skilled, well-paid Microsoft engineers really let a system this flawed on the market? I really feel like this update has made my computer lethargic and much less effective.

Windows 10 is the worst version yet and I’ve been using this product since its inception. Bought brand new computer and it worked great with 8.1 for a few weeks. Now nothing opens without a very long wait, (sometimes not at all). Forget Edge. Right click hardly ever works. I’m with Gustavo. For a company that’s been around as long as Microsoft, you’d think they would have the testing phase down by now. Really frustrated. Next time, I may go with a Mac.

I believe I had the same problem-when I reverted back to Windows 7 my installation files were corrupted. After about 5 hours I used a repair disk to install a backup copy of Windows 7-I know this is not much help if you don’t have a backup. I’ve so far read about four people having problems with file corruption when installing Win 10. All I can recommend is get a Windows 7 DVD or Windows 7 Repair disk and try doing a ‘Windows installation Repair’.

If you have a Windows 7 Repair disk use it to format your system drive and install a backup of Windows 7-pretty much the same thing happened to my Dell. I believe the some of your FILES are unreadable not the HDD itself-before doing a complete install-try running CHKDSK /r from the command prompt.

I’m having a problem that the internet can’t solve. When I doubleclick a torrent in utorrent, a windows explorer window will open. If I move or touch the window, it will quickly close and re-open. Additionally, if I close the window, it will re-open. It doesn’t re-open again, just the one time.
And my Mail and Calendar apps don’t work. They open for five seconds and then close with no error message. And the PowerShell commands that supposedly worked in the betas don’t work now.
The problems are small so I’m not willing to do a system restore. I’m going to wait to see if Microsoft will fix this issue in an upcoming update.

Windows 10 completely crashed my Toshiba Satellite. Do not install on your laptop. I lost everything. Computer completely blank. It was like having an empty laptop. Could not go to system restore. Said there was no administrator on laptop. Windows 10 is crap. Put laptop in shop, they put back in 8.1 but could not help with files, photos, work I lost. Back to 8.1 and will stay with 8.1 until I buy a new laptop with Windows 10 already installed.

My problem is that when I click onto a library ie: Pictures – I cannot “see” the pictures, only the icon for whatever app is the default app. I can’t find a way to “see” my pics before I upload them to sites!! Very frustrating. Some of my video files have been trashed & my purchased AVG virus protection is gone.

Trying to load Windows 10 over 8.1 on Toshiba Satellite lap top it kept restarting because of the problem: Kernel Auto Boost Lock Acquisition with raised IRQL,.This means nothing to me. Eventaully it finished with Windows 10 desk top partly covering windoows 8 desk top. I was able to reinstall windows 8.1 and am loath to try windows 10 again.

Only access is through contrl-alt-delete, but as i said, cannot type fast enough between flashes. Please help!!!

Win 10 stopped all my sound playback working thru several players. As I do radio work and could not fix problem, I reverted to Win7. All sound back but now all my Word files are read only and I cannot edit them! I didn’t want Edge or tablet apps and Win 10 took up a huge amount of drive space and took longer to start up. Is this going to be another Vista?

You forgot to add “if all else fails throw the computer away, because now it’s a rock”. Yes, we are looking for our backup bootup cd’s, and trying to get back into the system, because we’re stuck at a black screen with an active mouse icon. Tried the “type in your password” which seems to work, only it brings it right back to the black screen. This happened when trying to get the pc to safe mode because the 60 meg internet was testing at less than 1/4 meg because the hunk of rock was so slow. Thanks for nothing, Microsoft.

@Ripu Did you Install Aero Glass?? …as I had problem with it and had to be super quick to uninstall it and it took like a couple of tries before I got it uninstalled…..or you could make it easy in falesafe mode and unistall it….if you did not use this program then it might be another one craching stuff……
Anyhow I went back to Windows 8.1 as the sound in Windows 10 suck balls when watching movies in VLC or in Kodi…..The Bass (Base) sound is gone because windows 10 have created some sorround thing that can’t be shut off……you can see that if you right click on your speaker icon….earlier Windows versions did not have that so am figuring this is what mess with the sound. ,anyhow I hope your issue will be fixed.

Had Windows 7 – nice stable OS…MS invites me to Download Windows 10…I check around and seems like mostly positive write up from bloggers so…I download…After the files are downloaded and installed…Ta daaa…I get the opening screen and the date and time in Japanese..! After that the mayhem begins…the graphics have gone to hell in a handbasket…incredibly twitchy – desktop icons are either tiny little antsize blobs or one icon ocuppies the whole screen. None of my Office programs allow me to save programs any more…tells me I need admin permission (I am admin and am signed on as such) – My computer is now effectively useless. Of course, I have a bunch of new features that I don’t want even if I could get them to work properly…! What I do need and want has been disabled…so I cannot do my work anymore! This stupid search pane on the left of the screen is sluggish to open often locks up….occasionally has a flickering fit where it goes on and off at about the right speed to induce epileptic fits…sufferers should not use this software without checking with MS about this! Downright dangerous then! It is the worst bit of software I have ever downloaded from MS or anyone. I am a big fan of Seven but I cannot get back to it and MS warns me now when I try to go back but not before. It is just completely amateurish…poorly planned, poorly executed…I have had 3 updates in under a week since downloading 10…None of them have made the slightest bit of difference as far as improvements go…and they may have made things worse. I would not do this to my worst enemies yet MS does this to their loyal customers. It is arrogance and stupidity to treat their Users like this. I just may have to by a new computer with all new software now I am so desperate to get something that works and at this rate it will be free source – thank the lord for the sanity of JAVA. My sympathies to my fellow sufferers out there…and to those who still have Seven – DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DOWNLOAD WINDOWS 10!

Don’t get Windows 10 just yet. It’s full of problems (as you can see above) I will wait for a year to see if they have corrected any of them having installed it back in July on it’s release date on a Windows 7 SP1 64 bit professional that has a 7.8 performance level. Almost nothing worked. I was able to download a couple of game apps that worked from X-Box and there serious about the month thing so if you don’t care to have Windows 10 I hope you have a install disk

After working with Edge for 15 minutes or so, it will lock up. Sometimes I may only have 1 tab open, but usually I have several open. I currently fix it by doing the “Alt-D”command and uses the Task Bar to close Edge. When I click on it to open, it will bring all the tabs that were open when it froze and I can continue where I left off. Does anyone know of a permanent fix?

If Windows 10 would work one has no need for this article! The end user who is told by the MS Get Windows 10 program that his system can be upgraded should not see a single problem during or after the upgrade, period. It is completely irresponsible by MS to upgrade systems which are in perfect working order to a OS version which is simply not able to run on the upgraded system. It is a shame that so many users are ending up with a nonfunctioning system after being pushed by MS to upgrade.

Update to Windows 10 resulted in the “Recent searches” on the Internet Explorer listing both my hotmail address as well as my personal password. Microsoft advised deleting browser history which I did but later on when I allowed the display of search history, the Hotmail address and password appeared on Internet Explorer as “recent searches”. Apparently, browsing history was not deleted. I have changed the password and the “recent searches” has not displayed it. Does anyone know how to permanently delete browser history so that what was captured in the past will not reappear later when browser history is again allowed?
Another problem, when Microsoft does updates, the icons on the main screen get scrambled from the previous order. Can this be prevented?

I actually bought a new HP laptop with Windows 10 installed and I’m still having problems. As a podcaster, I need to upload and download shows, a process that used to be easy. With Windows 10, uploading and downloading is hit or miss and mostly miss. I have tried Chrome and Edge and most of the time, it gets stuck and then I get the download/upload failed. I have to keep trying over and over until finally, it works. I have spent hours trying to upload one 40 minute mp3. Websites are also slow. I tried to pay bills today and ended up using my phone. This is ridiculous. I have scoured the web, tried a lot of ‘fixes’ and nothing works.

Worst OS ever. I’ve had computers since the late 1980’s and never had this much trouble. Crashing, mostly freezing. Will only boot up maybe 15% of the time. Reinstalled the OS twice now same results. Info is still there but all my programs were wiped out. Updates only seem to make it worse. On top of all that, Microsoft completely ignored my numerous requests for help. And my wife’s computer, we can’t even update to windows 10. keeps telling us the computer update. Again, no response from Microsoft. Probably for the best. Maybe I will look at apple.

    1. Since this latest update (april 2016) when I use Edge it can suddenly freeze and then it also seems to freeze the whole operating system. The only way to get passed this, is to turn off the laptop. So at the moment I don’t use Edge anymore.
