Pokémon GO is built on the idea that users want to capture as many creatures as they possibly can to fill their Pokedex. The game doesn’t allow Trainers to battle amongst each other specifically. There’s no Elite Four or Team Rocket to defeat either. At Level 5 the Gym system kicks in and lets you leave creatures behind at different locations. It’s a game of territory control really, with Gyms also coming under attack from members of opposing teams. The game is made more fun because the Gym system exists. That means, you need to level up as fast as you can before the game is anything other than you just capturing random creatures.

Here are some tips to help you level up faster in Pokémon GO. For general tips aimed at new players, check out our Pokémon GO Tips for Beginners guide.

Pokémon GO Tips to Level Up Faster: Beating and Taking Over Gyms

The aforementioned Gym system is the best way to level up faster in Pokémon GO.

Capture creatures with high-enough CP or enhance the creatures that you already have. Then you leave them at the vacant Gyms that litter your city or town. Depending on which team you’ve joined, you may find that those Gyms allow you to train and leave your own creatures there.

Battle with Gyms of opposing teams to earn XP that goes straight to your Trainer’s level too. To clear out a Gym, you’ll need decent enough creatures that can stand up to what has been left at that particular Gym.

Pokémon GO Tips to Level Up Faster: Capturing Pokémon

Every where you can walk, you can expect a Pokémon to appear. Some might think that’s a bit nerve wracking, but early on, it provides a reliable way to level up faster.

Using your initial supply of Poke Balls and the Poke Balls that you pick up from a Poke Stop to capture as many creatures as possible. With every capture, you pick up more experience that feeds into your character’s level. If you end up with creatures of the same type, keep the stronger one and exchange the extras with Professor Willow for Candy that allows you to power up and evolve your Pokémon .

Pokémon GO Tips to Level Up Faster: Use Incense a Lure

You’re not always going to be able to leave your house to walk around. Without any extra items, this would mean that you wouldn’t level up. Luckily there’s Incense.

Normally, you go to the Pokémon, but with Incense, the Pokémon come to you. Then the only thing that you have to do is throw Poke Balls at them and capture them. It’s a terrific way to level up faster when you’re tied up at home and just have a few moments to spend in the game.

Pokémon GO Tips to Level Up Faster: Capturing New Pokémon

This tip goes hand in hand with the other tips included in this guide. Capturing Pokémon earns you experience as a trainer.

Also keep in mind that adding a Pokémon that you’ve never seen before is a big part of the game. If you’re near a creature that’s not in your Pokedex, go ahead and capture it. You’ll notice that you get a bit more experience for getting it than you did for creatures that you have two or three of.

Pokémon GO Tips to Level Up Faster: Hatch Eggs

While you’re actively battling for control of the Gyms in your area and looking for Poke Stops, don’t forget to try to hatch some Eggs. Pokémon Eggs are a terrific, but easy way to get more experience and level up as a Trainer. Other than putting them in an Incubator, you just have to walk to get them to hatch. You’ll find yourself forgetting about them until they suddenly hatch and you’ve got extra experience that you hadn’t counted on.

Pokémon GO Tips to Level Up Faster: Visiting Poke Stops

Every time that you visit a Poke Stop you can collect items you’d have to spend in-game currency on. One interesting thing to note is that every time you visit a Poke Stop you also pick up experience that goes to your character’s level. Visit the stops often to level up faster. It’s even easier to exploit Poke Stops for leveling if you have a Poke Stop near you.

PokeStops & Gym Locations

PokeStops & Gym Locations

A recent question and answer session on the Silph Road confirms that Pokémon Go currently uses 30% to 50% of portals that were present in Niantic’s last game, Ingress. Pokémon Go maps these over real-world landmarks that players have to walk to.

PokeStops and Gyms are real-world locations that players go to pick up items and battle the creatures left behind by other trainers. Police departments are already warning players of the game to stay away from their stations, according to VG247.

Pokémon are like Schrodinger’s cat. Some that people captured to fill their Pokédex have definitely died in the ball. But we will never know. Nobody ever throws out that worthless trash Rattata so you never see its corpse.

Even though using incense at home is nice, I’ve heard that you can get more Pokémon by using those in more urban areas😉

On average you can capture about 6 Pokemon while using an incense lure if you don’t move around. If you do travel however this number doubles or more.
The current theory is that the incense creates a time zone around you and spawns a Pokemon every five minutes while the incense is active. However; if you travel and move out of this zone within the five minutes, a new zone is activated and a new Pokemon spawned.
