Google Smartwatch Release Rumored

A new report has surfaced suggesting Google is building two brand new Android Wear smartwatches that will be released later this year. The company is busy preparing the release of Android 7.0 Nougat, working on two new Nexus smartphones with HTC, and now will apparently take on the smartwatch market.

Recently all the attention has been on Google’s new 2016 Nexus smartphones, but it’s possible those won’t be the only Nexus devices arriving later this year. Watches made by Google themselves with the Google Assistant built-in could follow them. These could be Google or Nexus branded devices.

According to AndroidPolice, who has been accurate in the past thanks to reliable sources at Google, the company is building not one but two Android Wear watches. These will be completely round, have plenty to offer, and come in two different sizes to fit the needs of buyers. Here’s what the leaks suggest so far.

Before we begin it’s worth mentioning that this is nothing but a rumor right now, and there are no actual photos to back it up. That being said, the source has been accurate in the past, shared reliable information, and AndroidPolice gives this rumor a 9/10 in terms of credibility and actually coming to fruition. If these are Nexus watches, they could be manufactured by a partner or by Google, it’s too early to tell.

Update: The image above goes along with even newer information from their sources. It resembles what could be the finished product, or at least prototypes. It also shows the extremely useful watch faces packed with information for users thanks to Android Wear 2.0 software. That photo was produced from actual photos of a prototype, to hide the identity of the leakster. It could be accurate, but things are also usually subject to change by the time these are released. All those widgets look very useful.

They state that Google is working on two new Android Wear smartwatches, that may or may not be called Nexus devices, and they’ll be released after the 2016 Nexus smartphones. One will be bigger than the other and with more features, but both will still be smaller than the large 46mm Moto 360 2nd Gen.

Both of Google’s new Android Wear smartwatches will have completely round faces, not the flat-tire design we’ve seen from Motorola. They will be premium models, with the latest Android Wear 2.0 software and more.

Codenamed Angelfish and Swordfish, these two new smartwatches will help Google push Android Wear forward, considering Samsung is using their own OS and other watch brands haven’t been releasing new devices lately. We’ve seen nothing from LG, Huawei is still relatively new, and Motorola has yet to release a 3rd Gen Moto 360. As a result Google will pick-up the slack, and release two stunning choices for buyers. Possibly even bundle them with the new Nexus phones, Project Fi network services and more. We’ll have to wait and see.

Android Police states that the better of the two is Angelfish, although the names have yet to be confirmed and will change when they’re actually released. AngelFish will have a bigger 43.5mm round face (slightly smaller than the 46mm Moto 360 2nd Gen) and have three side buttons as pictured at the top of the page. A centered round crown, with a button on the top and bottom. It will have strap lugs, rather than just a round device like Motorola’s smartwatch. It should also have the latest Android Wear, metal design, 4G LTE connectivity, GPS and be a standalone device, without the need for a paired smartphone. It will be the better of the two.

The smaller model is only slightly smaller, coming in at 42mm like many smaller Android Wear watches available today, and will have one crown button on the side. It’s design slightly differs, there’s no 4G LTE or GPS, and these may have a heart rate monitor but that’s yet to be confirmed.

At the end of the day we don’t have too many details yet, but it’s exciting to know this already. Google looks to be making two impressive new Nexus smartwatches that will be released later this year. Likely at aggressive pricing, paired with Nexus phones, and showcase everything Android Wear has to offer. We’re also hearing Google will add some awesome new features to Android Wear and some interactive faces to make access to music, Gmail, texts, and other things easier. Then, one big aspect is the new Google Assistant (like Google Home) will be built in, giving these even more appeal. We’ll update once we know more.
