Elgato Eve Review: Eve Room and Eve Weather

Published

on

The Elgato Eve line of smart home accessories allow you to monitor your house from anywhere using two small sensors that can check in on the temperature, air quality and other items that allow you to monitor your home and backyard.

After spending a few months testing several of the Elgato Eve accessories the Eve Room and Eve Weather work well and proved useful, but you need a real desire to track this kind of information.

The Eve Weather is $74.95 and the Eve Weather is $49.99. You can buy them on Amazon, at Apple and other retailers.

There are also door and window sensors that work with the Elgato Eve accessories, notifying you if a door or window is opened or closed. They do a good job at this, but it is not something that I need to track like I do the air quality of my home office.

The Eve Room’s air quality sensor is the most interesting to me as I live near a quarry that regularly blankets the neighborhood in a fine coat of stone dust. The small sensor sits on a desk or a bookshelf and connects wirelessly to relay information to your iPhone.

On the first day the air quality sensor showed off the chart levels, which caused a scare, but this is part of a calibration style event that eventually settled down. There are times when my office air quality is not excellent, but for the most part it is good.

It is HomeKit compatible so you can use Siri to ask questions about the information that it tracks. Setup is simple and in the last several months I only had to reset the device once, likely due to changing out a home network and an iPhone.

Eve Room can also measure temperature and humidity. The sensor lets me know that my office runs about three degrees warmer than the main area of my house. That’s one reason I am switching from Nest to Ecobee, which will allow me to place a remote sensor in my office to keep the temp in line.

Users who don’t have a smart thermostat could use the Eve Room to know if the temperature at home drops low in the winter or goes high in the summer due to a failed furnace or air conditioner.

If you like knowing exactly how hot and humid your backyard is, the Eve Weather is an awesome hyper-local weather station. It will not tell you if it is raining or snowing, but it does survive anything that Ohio weather can throw at it. The Eve Weather sits outside on a flat surface or it can hang on a screw. It’s been almost covered in snow and baked to over 100 degrees with no issues.

The Elgato Eve app tracks the data for you, allowing you to see current and historical information.

The Eve app tracks information well, but it does not include a way to educate users about what to do, if for example air quality is bad. The sensors do a good job of informing you, but you have to then research and take action. This isn’t an issue for the Eve Weather sensor, which is basically a high-tech personal weather station, but the Eve Room should provide tips if something is way out of line.

Overall the Elgato Eve Weather and Eve Room accessories work well. I wish the app did a better job of telling users what to do if something is at a dangerous level in the house. If you want to monitor your house from anywhere and you want to be able to ask Siri about this information, the Elgato Eve accessories fit the bill.
