How to Use a Pokemon GO Lure Module

Published

on

For the Pokemon GO release, developer Niantic had the tough job of rethinking years of game development. Made specifically, for iPhone and Android, the game uses GPS, camera and digital compass technology to make the world of Pokémon come alive. The company got creative, rethinking some classic items from the Nintendo handheld entries in the franchise. The Pokémon GO Lure Module is a perfect representation of something the studio got right.

Pokémon GO Lure Modules are used to turn the game’s mechanics around for players. The game tracks a player’s location, dropping creatures for them to encounter and collect in certain areas. Besides neighborhood exploration, the mechanic forces players to stay active – or at least leave their living space – if they ever want to catch the game’s most exotic creatures.

Lure Modules reverse the mechanic. Instead of a player going out in the wild in search of Pokémon, the Pokémon come to them.

Using a Pokémon GO Lure Module

Lure Modules allow you, the player to stay in one place for extended period of time instead of searching the area for Pokémon. In that way, they’re very similar to another Pokémon GO item, Incense. There are two major differences though, differences that will have you wishing you had a Lure Module.

Whereas Incense can be deployed anywhere by a Trainer, Pokémon GO Lure Modules requires that a Trainer be at a PokeStop. PokeStops are the waypoints that the game sets at specific landmarks around the world. The same stops offer free PokeBalls and Eggs every-so-often.

Lure Modules are more powerful than an Incense. They should attract far more creatures when they’re active. Also, since they emanate from a PokeStop, everyone at the PokeStop can share in the effects. That means all players at that PokeStop should be able to capture creatures without having to leave. Pokémon GO Lure Modules are perfect for large groups of friends or for anyone wishing to meet up with other Trainers. A flurry of pink surfaces around PokeStops where Lure Modules have been used.

Where to Get a Pokémon GO Lure Module

You often get Incense when you increase in Trainer level but you can buy extra. Pokémon GO Lure Modules don’t have to be purchased. The game hands them out when players reach some levels. However, you don’t get them from visiting PokeStops, it seems.

A single Lure Module costs 100 PokeCoins. PokeCoins are the currency that the game uses. A pack of eight can be purchased for 680 PokeCoins. Because $.99 buys 100 PokeCoins, you can expect to pay $.99 for a single Lure Module and at least $7 for three Pokemon GO Lure Modules.

PokeStops & Gym Locations

A recent question and answer session on the Silph Road confirms that Pokémon Go currently uses 30% to 50% of portals that were present in Niantic’s last game, Ingress. Pokémon Go maps these over real-world landmarks that players have to walk to.

PokeStops and Gyms are real-world locations that players go to pick up items and battle the creatures left behind by other trainers. Police departments are already warning players of the game to stay away from their stations, according to VG247.

Your wording is disgraceful. People were reminded that they don’t need to go into the Police Station, not WARNED from going to the Police Station.

Horrible article. You title it, “how to use a Lure module” and then don’t even explain HOW to use it. Just what they are.

So if a business is looking to pay for lure models do they have to play the game for x amount of time to get coins or can they sign up and right away pay for x amount of lures? I don’t understand the length of time– how long does a lure model last?

There are some scare stories making the rounds about “beacons”, and these lures are the only thing I have found that can fit. With much pearl-clutching and other expressions of dismay, some are claiming that beacons can be set up in the game to attract under-age players. They say the game asks for the players date-of-birth, which is true, and then suggest it ought not to use the an under-age player’s location, which sounds as though somebody has completely missed the point.

Maybe I am the one who has missed something, but if you put a Lure at a Pokestop it’s attracting wild Pokemon, not players. and if you want to use this for nefarious purposes, just how to you convert Pokemon to players? The simple way to do this is open a player account, buy Pokecoins with real money, and then maintain lures. All that’s going to leave a trail. There might be another mechanism for a business sponsorship, but it still leaves a trail.

And if there some other device, isn’t it still going to be a case of following the money? After all, everything in the game has to go through the Niantic servers.

How can businesses buy lures to attract customers when lures can only be used at pokestops? Only a small percentage of businesses are pokestops. Right?

I’m in the same boat as above!
I bought a lure module before I levelled up, I tried using it at an unused pokestop – fail. Then I used the pokestop – fail.
I’m waiting on someone saying I must uninstall haha and I don’t want to do that!
    Any suggestions appreciated!

Same issue I’m having, tried to use my lure at two different pokestops and said the item could not be used here. I’m a little confused on this one.
