Nexus 5 July Update Problems Frustrate Owners

Published

on

Earlier this month Google released their monthly security update for a slew of Nexus smartphones and tablets, including the popular Nexus 5. These are typically quick and painless updates aimed at making our devices more secure. However, the July Android 6.0.1 security update is causing problems for many Nexus 5 owners.

Every month for the past little while we’ve received monthly security updates without issue. That being said, the Nexus 5 has seen its fair share of problems here and there for whatever reason. Most get fixed, and it looks like the same situation will need to take place after this latest release.

On July 7th, the update rolled out for Nexus users. Information is available on the Nexus security bulletin regarding what changes have been made. The problem, is Nexus 5 owners are having huge issues with the volume controls, and other small bugs. Volume doesn’t even work for some, and its frustrating owners. Here’s what users need to know.

Nexus-5-25

According to various reports throughout Reddit, the XDA Developer forum and even Google’s own product help forums, lots of Nexus 5 owners are having some serious issues after the July software update arrived. It was a tiny release aimed at security, but changed quite a bit of things considering it had a list of July 1st and July 5th changes made by Google.

Nexus 5 Update Problem

Apparently there is a mistake in the code or a bug somewhere that is causing an audio memory allocation failure, which is the technical term. What owners are experiencing are simply volume bugs and problems on the Nexus 5. Things like in-call volume being completely quiet and can’t be controlled, all other volume controls acting up, users missing calls because ringtone volume went to silent and more.

Some claim games and apps can’t be controlled or muted, and one user states all of his volume sliders went nearly to the lowest setting possible, and can’t be changed. This isn’t a huge issue, but at the same time it almost makes the Nexus 5 unusable.

Nexus 5 Volume Bug Fix

Looking around at a few reports on the web and the official Google product help forums, a fix is apparently on the way. This means owners with a Nexus 5 can look forward to another OTA update or manually file they can flash to get the latest software, which will reportedly completely fix this volume bug that’s frustrating so many owners.

We don’t have any additional details, or a release date, but it shouldn’t take long to finish and get released for all users. Stay tuned for more details.

What Can You Do Now?

If you have a Nexus 5 and the latest July Android 6.0.1 security update broke volume controls or other things, we have a few potential solutions.

For one, there’s a custom kernel for those who flash ROM’s and root their Nexus 5, which apparently has the latest code fixes thanks to some developers at XDA. This is unofficial software, but will fix the Nexus 5 until Google releases new software.

Another option is to simply flash an older version of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for the Nexus 5, even the May or June security update files. These are available directly from Google, and you can learn how to flash it right here. This should use older software and fix the problem. Otherwise, Nexus 5 owners need to just wait for Google to release an OTA with fixes, which should be here in the next week or so.

It’s also worth mentioning that if you have a Nexus 5 and you haven’t received or updated to the latest July security update yet, don’t. Wait another week or two for Google to roll out another software stack, without these volume bugs and other problems. This is all we know for now, and we’ll update as soon as we know more or another update is released.

“This isn’t a huge issue, but at the same time it almost makes the Nexus 5 unusable.”

How is making a phone unusable not a “huge issue”?

Big G just gave all N5 users the reason they needed to spend $$ and upgrade to the 5X. Oldest trick in the book, no official fix coming !

My nexus 5 became useless… A small issue with volume. Well if cant hear a thing, and have TO wait a month to get a fix … I Call this b.s.!!
Not all the peopple uses ther phones to just fool around, I already lost Busines , a “misshap ” like that is a major problem . Makes me upset, and think in buying another device, which at this poin I already did, but the Mail loss is trust. I’ll think twice before buying another nexus product or google’s for that matter.

What about the camera bug issue? It’s all over Big G’s forum and Android’s forum but no one is coming back with a straight forward answer to this issue. Has Google stopped providing support to customers who bought their sole product (Nexus line). Paying each months bill without been able to use and enjoy wholefully the product because a problem not cause by me is not being adressed by whom it should be could constitue a nice class action for us Nexus 5 users…
