Galaxy Note 7 and New Gear VR Leaks Continue As Release Nears

With only a few days left before Samsung takes the stage in New York City to officially announce the Galaxy Note 7, new rumors continue to pour in. The latest leaks are suggesting some rather disappointing final details, but do give us our first look at the improved Samsung Gear VR 2 headset for 2016.

Over the course of the past month we’ve received everything from leaked press photos, photos and video of working prototypes, pre-order or release date details and more. It’s safe to say the phone and its final design is no secret, but the final specs and features are still somewhat of a mystery.

We know it will be nearly identical to the Galaxy Note 5 from 2015, but also similar to the Galaxy S7 Edge released in March. If the most recent rumor from the often accurate leakster @Onleaks are right, the Galaxy Note 7 may not be as big of an upgrade as some initially expected. However, it still looks to be the best Galaxy Note to date, and we have all the details after the break.

Reports about the Galaxy Note 7 have been back and forth for the past three months, but with the release date almost here everything is starting to come together. We’ve heard everything from a bigger screen, a flat and curved model, amazingly long battery life and more. Realistically though, the Galaxy Note 7 will be more in-line with the Galaxy S7 Edge, and possibly not as big of an upgrade from last year as originally expected.

The French site NoWhereElse managed to receive more official press photos as well as our first image of the new and improved Samsung Gear VR built for the Galaxy Note 7. As a reminder the Galaxy Note 7 will be announced on August 2nd in New York City, and pre-orders should be available either the same day or August 3rd. Some reports claimed it would be released the same day, but we’re now hearing an August 15th release date is more likely.

With that said, here’s the latest specs based on countless leaks and new information.

Galaxy Note 7 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD Curved “Edge” Display
  • Samsung Exynos 8-core Processor (US May Have Snapdragon)
  • 4GB of RAM (Not 6GB like earlier rumors)
  • 64GB Storage with micro-SD support to expand storage
  • Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow
  • 12 DualPixel Camera with f/1.7 aperture, IOS, fast auto-focus, more
  • 5 MP Front Camera
  • Fingerprint Scanner, Samsung Pay, USB Type-C
  • Iris Eye Scanner technology
  • Integrated S-Pen Stylus
  • 3,500 mAh battery with fast charging (not 4,000 mAh like earlier rumors)
  • IP68 dust and water resistant
  • more

The biggest thing potential buyers need to take away from the leaked specs above are that the Galaxy Note 7 will likely only have 4GB of RAM, and not 6GB like we’ve heard in the past. However, that isn’t too big of a deal, as most phones don’t even use all 4GB, and 6GB is simply overkill in a smartphone and on the Android operating system.

An area of concern though, is the continued reports of the Galaxy Note 7 only having a 3,500 mAh battery inside. While this is the biggest battery of any Galaxy Note to date, it’s smaller than the Galaxy S7 Edge or Galaxy S7 Active.

The Galaxy Note 7 has a large 5.7-inch display but apparently only a 3,500 mAh battery, likely due to needing room for the integrated S-Pen stylus and space to make it IP68 dust and water resistant. The new USB Type-C port however means it will recharge faster than any other Samsung device ever released. We’ll have to wait and see, but we’ve heard 3,500 mAh time and time again from typically accurate leaksters.

Next up is the new Samsung Gear VR headset for virtual reality. The new model pictured above is nearly identical to the first version, but has a few improvements across the board. According to @Onleaks the new Gear VR is slightly smaller and more compact, has a better strap for improved comfort and longer use, and maybe a better display.

His information suggests the screen has a wider viewing angle for a more immersive virtual reality experience of 110 degrees, compared to only 96 degrees in the current Gear VR. The new model also has a new USB Type-C port specifically for the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, but appears to be backwards compatible with the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S6, Note 5 and more. Meaning it has both a micro-USB and a USB Type-C plug to support all of Samsung’s latest smartphones. It also comes in all-black, just like the new Note 7.

For now it’s all a waiting game. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and the new Gear VR will be revealed on August 2nd in New York City, and released shortly after. As soon as we have the exact details and release date information we’ll update with everything buyers need to know.
