How to Use Messages in iOS 10
The iOS 10 update includes a complete overhaul to the Messages on iPhone and iPad and this is how to use the new Messages features.
There are now iMessage apps, options to send text and photos with special effects, digital touch, handwriting options and more. This is the biggest change to Messages on iPhone in years.
We’ll walk you through how you can use the new Messages app, including a look at what’s new so that you know where to find the right options. This will also show you the tips and tricks that you need to be a master of Messages on iOS 10.
How to Use Messages in iOS 10

Use iOS 10 Emoji Replacement in Messages
When you are typing a message in the Messages app you can tap on the Emoji button after you are done typing and the iPhone will highlight words that you can tap to turn into emoji.
You need to tap on the orange highlighted words to make this happen. You will also see emoji show up in the predictive text when typing in Messages and in other apps.
How to Use iMessage Effects on iOS 10
When you send a message on iOS 10 you can now send messages with effects. These include effects just to the message and effects that take over the entire screen.
On a newer iPhone force touch on the send icon after you type a message to open up the options.
From here you can choose to slam, be loud, be gentle or use invisible ink. You can also tap on Screen at the top to; Say with balloons, confetti, with lasers,with fireworks or with a shooting star. Swipe left and right to choose the option you want to use. Tap X to cancel.
How to Send a Tapback in iOS 10
You can send a Tapback in iOS 10 to reply to a message without actually typing something. It’s essentially a Facebook like for a message that you sent or that someone sent you.
Press and hold on the message and then tap on the Tapback options above it; love, like, dislike, HAHA, !! or ?. These show up as a small icon next to the original message.
How to Delete Messages in iOS 10
If you want to delete a specific message in iOS 10 or parts of a message, you need to tap and hold on the message until the Tapback icons appear.
Then tap on more at the bottom of the screen. From here select the messages you want to delete and then tap on the trash can.
How to Send Photos in Messages on iOS 10
Apple changes how you send photos in iOS 10, including making it easier to quickly take a photo and send it to someone.
Tap on the small arrow to the left of the screen if you don’t already see the camera icon. You can now tap anywhere on the live preview to take a photo and put it in the send box. These photos don’t show up in your camera roll, so don’t use this for super important photos.
Scroll to the right to see recent photos or scroll left to access your Photo Library or to o right to the full camera.
How to Use Digital Touch in Messages on iOS 10
Tap on the heart with two fingers on it to access Digital Touch on Messages for iOS 10. From here you can write sketch a message or send a digital touch, but you can also use some other cool options.
You can send a touch, send a poke, send a kiss, a heartbeat or a broken heart. Don’t send too many of these or you will likely annoy the person on the other end. You can also take a photo or video and draw over top of what you shoot to share.
How to Use iMessage Stickers
If you install iMessage apps on iOS 10 you can get access to games and stickers on your iPhone.
You can tap on a sticker to send it just like a picture, but that’s not all. You can drag a sticker up to the main Message screen on top of text or a photo and then send it. You can also make it bigger or smaller by pinching.
With options like this you can now put a Mario mustache or hat on top of a photo you sent or create other funny moments.
How to Use iMessage Apps
There are also iMessage apps like Truth Truth Lie and other games that allow you to play a game right inside the Messages app. These can use the camera and microphone or they can be simpler with game of Words with Friends.

How to Send Handwritten Messages in iOS 10
If you turn your iPhone into landscape mode when you are in a message it will change to the handwriting feature.
With this selected you can tap on one of the pre-written messages to send a pretty looking handwritten message. You can also write out your own message as beautifully as you are able to.
How to Send Read Receipts to One Person
With iOS 10 you can choose who knows that you’ve read their message. When you are in a specific Message thread, tap on the i in the upper right and then turn on read receipts for that person specifically.
How to Draw on Photos in iOS 10
You can use Markup in iOS 10 to draw on photos and highlight important parts. This can be a fun way to scribble on a picture, but it’s also an awesome way to call attention to an address, to an issue with something you are working on or otherwise highlight a specific part of a photo without using a third-party app.

So most of these won’t work on the 6 right. I don’t see the fireworks or bubbles stuff.

And here is a tip from someone who now feels like an idiot: if you want to add an affect, you first need to add a message! Humph.

All I need to do is reply and send a message. I don’t have time for all the bells and whistles. How do I do just that with this IOS upgrade?

How do you copy text from a message? Highlight to define a word within a text?
