Red Dead Redemption 2 is confirmed and today we want to take a look at everything we know about the Red Dead Redemption 2 release for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
2010’s Red Dead Redemption was the spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver. The title garnered numerous awards and it’s considered one of the best video games of all time. Naturally, fans clamored for a sequel. And after several long years, Rockstar Games is poised to deliver.
After years of rumors and speculation, the Red Dead Redemption 2 release is confirmed though it won’t be making its way to shelves this holiday season.
Fans of the series will have to wait awhile before Red Dead Redemption 2 arrives for console and, if we’re lucky, Windows PC.
With Red Dead Redemption 2 release officially confirmed we want to take a look at the most important things to know, right now, about the Red Dead Redemption 2 release date, pre-orders, features, multiplayer, and more.
We’ll continue to update this roundup with new details to check back for regular updates in the buildup to the game’s release date.
Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS4 & Xbox One
Red Dead Redemption 2 is confirmed for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Developers have shifted away from the PS3 and Xbox 360 so a surprise release on those two aging consoles is unlikely. It’s unclear if the game will make it to Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo Switch or the Windows PC.
Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, has said that its interested in the Nintendo Switch but that its support for the console will come down to sales.
Unfortunately, the Red Dead Redemption 2 announcement arrived without confirmation for Windows PC users.
This doesn’t rule out Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC but this certainly won’t sit well with those who prefer Rockstar’s games on Windows.
Remember, Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC arrived several months after it landed for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
GameStop’s listing for Red Dead Redemption 2 notes that “Red Dead Redemption 2 PC is coming soon” but we wouldn’t read too much into it. Yet.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Release Date
The Red Dead Redemption 2 release date is confirmed for next year.
Rockstar hasn’t issued a specific release date just yet but it has confirmed a Fall 2017 release window for the highly anticipated title. For reference, the Grand Theft Auto 5 release date landed at the start of the fall in mid-September.
It’s not clear when we’ll get an official Red Dead Redemption 2 release date for Xbox One and PS4. Those interested in the game’s release should signup for Rockstar’s mailing list.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Pre-Orders & Deals
Also of note is the fact that some retailers are already taking Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-orders ahead of the game’s release date.
Retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop are selling the game a year in advance and those with Amazon Prime and Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked accounts can take advantage of early Red Dead Redemption 2 deals.
Note that the Red Dead Redemption 2 release dates and release times listed at these retailers are placeholder dates.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Story, Characters & More
Rockstar says that Red Dead Redemption 2 will feature an “epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland” which seems to confirm an expansive single-player mode.
There’s also a bunch of speculation about the precise decade with some sleuths predicting a plot set in the late 1890’s.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently shared some additional details about Red Dead Redemption 2 at an MKM Partners event.
He believes the time is right “for a big, sprawling, optimistic view of America.” He also says the game wikll feature “incredible emotional depth” with “great story elements and great gameplay elements.”
The developer says the game’s “vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.”
Grand Theft Auto 5 Online arrived alongside the single-player portion of the game and it looks like Rockstar has grand designs for Red Dead Redemption as well.
The company’s reportedly registered a Red Dead Redemption online domain ahead of the game’s launch next year. Look for the experience to build on GTA 5’s online mode.
Rockstar typically has used third-person view in its games though GTA 5 added in a unique first-person view. Naturally, fans of the Red Dead series are interested to see if the company brings that element to Red Dead Redemption 2.
Nothing is confirmed but here’s what Rockstar had to say about third-person and first-person during a question and answer session:
“We are excited by the response to our first effort at a first-person experience, but remain committed to third person games and may or may not use first person as a camera option in the future.
We do like to, whenever possible, give people options so they can play a game the way they like.”
Red Dead Redemption 2 Map
Earlier this year, an alleged Red Dead Redemption 2 map leaked showing some of the game’s potential locations. The map first appeared on NeoGAF.
While the alleged map was later removed from the website, some users were able to save it for the world to see.
According to TechRadar, this map is legit and it’s for Red Dead Redemption 2. There are numerous locations listed including The Great Plains, home to the Blackwater settlement. There are also several bodies of water, something that we didn’t see in Red Dead Redemption.
If you’re curious about how the Red Dead Redemption 2 map stacks up with the map from the original, Reddit has you covered.
The image above shows how the official map from the first game stacks up, size-wise, with the leaked map for Red Dead Redemption 2.
The above image is another interesting look at the Red Dead Redemption 1 map and the rumored Red Dead Redemption 2 map.
PS4 Red Dead Redemption 2 Bonus
Sony and Rockstar have announced a partnership for Red Dead Redemption 2. Sony says that “PS4 players get first access to earn select online content in the vast open world of Red Dead Redemption 2.”
It’s not clear what this content is though Sony tells PS4 owners they can expect some more details in the near future.
It’s also worth noting that the PS3 classic Red Dead Redemption is now available on PlayStation Now. PlayStation Now is available for PC which means Red Dead Redemption, and Undead Nightmare, are now playable on Windows PC for the first time.
The original Red Dead Redemption is already available on Xbox One via Microsoft’s Backwards Compatibility feature.
It can be played on Windows PC thanks to a feature that allows gamers to stream games on a Windows 10 device.
Let's start with one of our favorite PC Fallout 4 mods that quickly made it over to the long list of Fallout 4 mods for console.
keyNuker creates a key ring in your inventory that hides keys and passwords. With it installed, your MISC tab in on your Pip-Boy is going to be a lot more manageable, particularly if you're deep into the game with tons and tons of items listed.
The screenshot here shows you what the vanilla MISC tab looks like compared to the MISC tab with keyNuker installed. It's night and day.
This is one of our favorite Fallout 4 mods and one that should consider if you're tired of wasting time scrolling through hundreds (many of them worthless) of items.
