21 Exciting iPhone 6 Rumors

Published

on

At WWDC 2014, Apple talked a lot about iOS 8, OS X Yosemite and tools that it will be supplying to its formidable army of developers but it did not talk about the rumored iPhone 6, a device that has been rumored for several months now. While the iPhone 6 launch may not have taken place at WWDC, all signs point to a new iPhone release later this year and here, we take a look at the most exciting rumors we’ve seen emerge thus far.

Last year played out exactly like iPhone and iOS rumors said they would. At WWDC 2013, Apple took the stage and debuted the brand new iOS 7 update that revamped the look of iOS and added hundreds of new features to the operating system that powers Apple’s iPhone , iPad and iPod touch.

iPhone 5s rumors suggested that Apple would again announce a new iPhone, or iPhones, in the fall. And with an iOS 7 release pegged for the fall, those rumors appeared to be spot on.

And spot on they were. In September, Apple took the stage to show off the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and pieces of the iOS 7 update that it did not detail at WWDC. Just a few days later, the iOS 7 update and the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were all on shelves. In this case, iPhone and iOS rumors turned out to be accurate and it’s possible that we could see a repeat in 2014.

New iPhone rumors point to the arrival of an iPhone 5s successor sometime later this year and from the look of things, we could potentially see two new iPhone 6’s replace the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

iPhone 6 rumors have been rampant and they haven’t shown any signs of slowing down. With the WWDC 2014 keynote not over and done with and iOS 8 on the way, we want to take a detailed look at what we feel are the 21 most exciting iPhone 6 rumors that we’ve seen in the last five months.

iPhone 6 Release Date

1. Apple still hasn’t confirmed an iPhone 6 for release this year but there are enough rumors pointing to a release that consumers should feel comfortable about a brand new iPhone release in 2014.

Apple’s Eddy Cue recently said that the company’s 2014 product pipeline is the best that he’s seen during his 25 years at the company. That’s a pretty bold statement and there is simply no way that those plans do not include a new iPhone or two. There are too many rumors and there is too much demand. Rest assured, an iPhone is coming.

2. iPhone 6 launch rumors have all, for the most part, pointed to an arrival in the fall. So, it wasn’t surprising to see Apple leave the iPhone out of its WWDC announcements. Apple did, however, hint an iPhone 6 release window yesterday during its WWDC keynote.

iOS updates always accompany new iPhone hardware to shelves. The iOS 8 release date is confirmed for the fall which essentially confirms the iPhone 6 launch and release date for the fall as well.

3. Of course, Apple hasn’t given the iOS 8 update an exact release date which means that the iPhone 6 launch and release both remain up in the air.

Rumors though have been very specific and they have pointed to an iPhone 6 launch inside August and September. As we’ve pointed out numerous times, most iPhone 6 release date rumors point to September. Where there is a lot of smoke, there is usually a lot of fire and for now, September appears to be the front runner.

4. In fact, Deutsche Telekom is so confident that the iPhone 6 will be out in September that is has begun telling its customers to prepare for an iPhone 6 release date on September 19th. The date probably isn’t based on inside information but rather, it’s probably a guess based on Apple’s release pattern.

5. Apple’s last two iPhone models, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, were both announced in early September and released on the third Friday of the month. September 19th falls on the third Friday of the month and thus, September 19th is a date that prospective iPhone 6 buyers will certainly want to circle on their calendar. It’s not set in stone but we would not be surprised if at least one iPhone 6 release date took place on the 19th.

iPhone 6 features

6. iPhone 6 rumors continue to point to two different models. Rumors suggest that we could see two iPhone 6 release dates, one in September per usual, and one ahead of the holidays perhaps as late as November. The larger, 5.5-inch iPhone 6, is rumored to be hitting shelves later in the year but of course, nothing is set in stone.

At this point though, prospective iPhone 6 buyers probably want to start preparing as if there will be two iPhone 6 release dates rather than just the one.

Display

7. Indeed, iPhone 6 rumors have continually pointed to the arrival of two new display sizes that would put the iPhone on par with many of the big screen Android smartphones that have been around for years. The exact sizes remain unconfirmed though recently, rumors have settled on a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and a 5.5-iPhone 6.

The 4.7-inch model would be in range of devices like the Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, two strong iPhone rivals, while the larger model would challenge the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the rumored Galaxy Note 4. There sizes have been rumored ad nasuem in recent weeks so there is reason to believe that they are at least close to the real measurements.

8. Those who are interested in how those sizes compare to iPhone 5s, Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and each other would be wise to check out our extensive size comparison that shows just how these two display sizes could match up with their rivals.

9. Size may not be the only change that Apple has planned for its new iPhone. Rumors have pointed to an increase in screen resolution as well, something that could make for a crisper, sharper Retina Display on the iPhone 6.

10. Apple may not be talking about the iPhone 6 just yet but yesterday’s iOS 8 announcement points a possible change.

A new tool in the iOS 8 beta program and support for a new user interface design is probably as close to confirmation of a bigger screen that we’ll get prior to Apple’s iPhone 6 launch. With iOS 8 comes XCode 6 which offers support to develop for resizable iPhones, giving developers a way to test for an iPhone 6 with a larger screen.

As we’ve noted, there is not an iPhone with a re-sizable display, but when a developer selects this option they are able to input the size of the iPhone or iPad screen of their choice.

11. Reports say that Apple has been testing a 1704×960 display for the iPhone 6. If true, this means that Apple will most likely stick with the 16:9 aspect ratio that it has applied to its iPhones since the iPhone 5′s release back in 2012. It also means an increase in the pixel count per inch which again, would translate to better looking content including games, movies and more.

12. We could also see the iPhone 6 display come with a number of other exciting features as well. A recent rumor suggests that Apple could use a new on-cell display technology on the iPhone 6 that would offer four key advantages over other displays on the market. Those advantages are said to include:

  • Faster screen response
  • No smear
  • No jitter
  • Better color reproduction

13. The iPhone 6 is also said to be coming with a sapphire display. Sapphire is a strong material that can withstand abuse without showing scratches and should help prevent broken displays from drops.

Sapphire is already in use on the iPhone 5s lens cover and home button but it could play a much bigger role with the iPhone 6.

Design

14. Numbered iPhone models like the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 brought significant redesigns that overhauled the look and feel of Apple’s iconic smartphone. “S” models like the iPhone 5s and iPhone 4s shared similar designs and focused on incremental changes to the hardware and software like Touch ID and Siri.

We’re now in the year after an iPhone “S” launch which means that there is a very good chance we’ll see Apple tweak the iPhone design and unsurprisingly, rumors have continually pointed in that direction. iPhone 6 design rumors started out slow but over the past month and a half, they have begun to firm up ahead of the iPhone 6’s release.

This shows just how thin the iPhone 6 could be.

This shows just how thin the iPhone 6 could be.

Alleged iPhone 6 dummy units have given us a glimpse at just how big a 4.7-inch iPhone and 5.5-inch iPhone could be. With small changes to the design, including thinner bezels, Apple might be able to keep both devices from becoming monstrosities. Again, it’s worth checking out our size comparison to get a feel for the potential size change. Unsurprising, the 5.5-inch model would be larger than a 4.7-inch iPhone.

15. Over time, these rumors have gotten more and more specific. Rumors, and these dummy models, point to a design that sports rounded edges like the iPod touch and new buttons. The power switch will apparently move to the side of the device, as opposed to the top, and the volume keys may shift from tiny circles to larger ovals.

16. iPhone 6 design rumors also point to a much thinner iPhone 6. While rumors haven’t agreed on a specific thickness, we’ve continually seen 7mm get thrown.

That number leaked out in alleged iPhone 6 schematics and it has shown up on the supposed iPhone 6 dummy units used by accessory manufacturers. By comparison, the iPhone 5s measures 7.6mm thin.

The Galaxy S5, on the right, is just 8.1mm thin.

17. The design is also rumored to include a Lightning port like Apple’s current iPhone and iPad models. It’s also said to have Touch ID inside its home button, something that we think Apple all but confirmed during yesterday’s iOS 8 announcement.

Specs

18. The new iPhone will be made up of more than just a form factor and a display. It will also likely come with a host of other features including a camera, processor, and storage space for files. iPhone 6 rumors point to a number of significant upgrades including changes to the processor and the camera.

Every year, Apple upgrades the camera inside of its iPhone. So, it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that Apple may have some exciting upgrades in store for the iPhone 6 camera.

Rumors continue to point to the lack of a major megapixel bump but the addition of image stabilization technology that would cut down on the shakiness inside video content and more.

Is Apple preparing a major upgrade to deliver "super-resolution" photos for the iPhone 6? Or will users need to wait longer?

19. Rumors have pointed to the addition of a new A8 64-bit processor. The processor is said to be an incremental bump from last year’s A7 chip and it’s said to be focused on performance and battery life enhancements. The latter will be important, especially if Apple adds a higher-resolution display and keeps the design thin.

20. The iPhone 6 will reportedly come with “improved LTE components” that will likely work in conjunction with the device’s support for VoLTE, also known as Voice Over LTE. VoLTE would, among other things, allow users to talk and surf the web at the same time, something they are unable to do at the moment.

The iPhone 6 may include mobile payments with NFC.

21. Finally, spec rumors continue to point to the arrival of NFC. Apple has long shunned Near Field Communication, a technology that Google adopted on its Android devices many years ago, but many believed that it was only a matter of time before Apple stuck a chip inside of its iPhone. If Apple does include NFC on board the iPhone 6, it would allow users to use it like a debit card or a credit card.

It’s still not clear if Apple will adopt NFC for the iPhone 6, or if the company plans to use iBeacons or other technology to make it easier to use the iPhone to buy things in the real world.

Great!!! A well described article for exciting iphone 6 rumors. Requires a lot of research too. But i think you have missed one. That’s iphone 6 cases. Many companies have started selling cases of iPhone 6 case before the launch of the phone. These companies are all over the world. Even Walmart has also started doing so. Few of the companies in UK and Asutralia have also started selling iPhone 6 cases before launch. I don’t know how it is possible. https://www.prepaymania.co.uk/mobilephone/fonerange-apple-iphone-6-real-leather-wallet-case-white.html
