32GB Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Remains Unclear

Published

on

It looks like U.S. consumers are in for another confusing, and potentially frustrating Samsung Galaxy S release as official Samsung Galaxy S5 release details have yet to shed light on the 32GB Galaxy S5 release.

In February, Samsung announced that the Galaxy S5 would be coming in 16GB and 32GB form. The company did not announce 64GB or 128GB models, both of which were rumored ahead of the device’s launch.

Today, AT&T and U.S. Cellular confirmed Galaxy S5 details to the public for the first time. And while they confirmed several pieces of the Galaxy S5 release, they failed to shed light on the 32GB Galaxy S5.

Both AT&T and U.S. Cellular announced that the Galaxy S5 will be arriving for $199.99 on-contract. AT&T’s announcement quietly states that the price is for the 16GB model. The U.S. Cellular announcement did not mention any one model specifically, forcing us to reach out to the company for comment.

U.S. Cellular tells Gotta Be Mobile that they “aren’t planning to carry the 32GB model at this time.” In other words, there is a good chance that the 16GB Galaxy S5 will be on the only model on shelves once the carrier’s April 11th release date comes around. AT&T did not respond to inquires about its plan for a 32GB model.

This development comes just a few days after a leak suggested that T-Mobile would be offering both the 16GB and 32GB versions of the Galaxy S5. T-Mobile, like U.S. Cellular, did not offer the 32GB version of the Galaxy S4. AT&T and Verizon were the only carriers to do so.

T-Mobile confirmed its Galaxy S5 details today saying that it will begin taking pre-orders on March 24th. The carrier did not announce a release date nor did it confirmed if it would have the 16GB and 32GB models available.

Sprint and Verizon haven’t announced their plans yet either though given that AT&T and U.S. Cellular are both planning releases in early April, we should see them confirm details soon.

The 32GB Galaxy S4 was a flashpoint last year due to the lack of internal storage on board the device and it appears that the same thing could happen this year.

The Galaxy S5 features a Micro SD card slot.

On the Galaxy S4, Samsung’s software took up around half of the internal storage space right from the get go, leaving users with around 9GB of internal storage space out of the box. The Galaxy S5 will feature more free internal space than the Galaxy S4 and will come with about 20% more space out of the box.

Both the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 feature microSD card slots so that users can expand storage up to 128GB but there are limitations to what users can keep on their microSD card.

We discovered that while Samsung lets users move apps to the SD card on the Galaxy S4, it is not something that works for every app. In Android 4.4.2 on the Galaxy S4 only certain apps can move files to the SD card, further complicating the use of a microSD card.

While a 32 Galaxy S5 release remains unclear in the U.S., consumers should expect to pay a premium for the device if it becomes available. AT&T and Verizon both charged $250 on-contract for the Galaxy S4 32GB last year, $50 more than the 16GB Galaxy S4 which was priced at the same $199.99 price point as the 16GB Galaxy S5.

Any Android with less than 32GB will be a no good for many people even if the device has an sd card slot. Kit kat 4.4.2 restrictions on using the external so card make it awkward. The sooner Android owners can have built in 128 GB as an option like the iPhone and iPad so much the better. With locked bootloaders, region sim locking, Knox exudes and now the hassle with the ext so, my days with Samsung are probably coming to an end.

What a joke… I currently have a 32gb S3… If no 32gb S5 then I will not get that phone. I will not purchase a phone without at least 32gb of built in memory. Especially when kitkat has put more restrictions on the use of the sd card. What a joke.

This might make me buy a HTC. All vendors carry the HTC One with 32GB and you can find a 64GB version if you look hard

Sprint not having a 32GB S4 model was why I didn’t buy the last model. Not having a 32GB S5 may cause me to switch carriers.

It’s funny, Sprint wants us to remain loyal to them, but it doesn’t seem they give a rat’s hindquarters about us. No 32gb GS5 makes T Mobile look better and better.

Ya ya I was let down all the way around with this one….first the leak 2 days early – 2 cheap cases blew the reveal , super gay. Then when it did release, no features worth a damn – true evolution and not revolution….they could have done better, it needs a new design the body of the phone is piss poor for being a “flagship” – what would have made it worthy? Ram boost ? 64 bit? even though thats kinda ehh they still coulda pushed the envelope, the QHD display? that was def possible but nope…..and now this….can’t even get 32gb….ya people don’t understand that SD cards are not the same as on board memory…..not at all, and with all the bloatware these new age carriers throw at you…..you’re down to what, 9 GB? seriously, that is like one HD flick , totally a no go here. I may not buy at all…..and did we need 3 freaking new watches?? No. How bout just one standalone watch guys? Actually fulfill it’s purpose , wear it and it alone , not like carry my damn phone too.

I started the petition below in the hopes that Sprint will take notice that there are enough of us to actually take action and correct this wrong.
