4G LTE Better Than Home Internet in Some Cases

Published

on

I spoke with Avram Piltch from Laptop Mag by phone bout Google Chrome OS and a few other geeky things. He was extremely excited about some speed tests he recently completed and he just couldn’t get enough of Verizon’s LTE service. In his Manhattan apartment, Verizon LTE was not only faster than Sprint’s and T-mobile’s 4G service, but it also beat out his Time Warner cable Internet service.

We’re only beginning to see 4G widely advertised as the major carriers’ services reach the largest markets. But not all 4G is created equally. Your mileage will vary depending on which device you’re using and where you’re using it.

Avram tested the 4G services against his home Interent service provider by running Speedtest.net tests, uploading/downloading files via FTP and loading a selection of web pages. In almost all cases Verizon LTE simply kicked the pants off Sprint/Clear, Time Warner and T-mobile.

Here’s one of the three charts Avram posted over at Laptop Mag. The results speak for themselves, with Verizon LTE downloading content nearly seven times faster than the nearest mobile competitor.

Verizon LTE isn’t necessarily designed for home use. Avram’s test unit was a USB stick, but I imagine it could be plugged into a CradelPoint router if you wanted to share the connection with your family when home.

With results like these, it’s only a matter of time before a significant number of people cut the cord on their home Internet connections in favor of speedy mobile services, much the same way many people have ditched land lines.

Shouldn’t the wording under the graph read “(Mbps – Higher is better)” ?

Yes- you are correct. It’s mislabeled.

I have a feeling that the empty verizon lte will slow as soon as people start using it. Didn’t verizon already say you should expect to be limited to 12 mbps?

Can’t wait until all those tween-agers fire up their new 4g phones when tehy leave school at 3:30 and watch all teh LTE towers collapse (along with your home LTE speeds) as the towers crash – we are an early Sprint market here (nice) but that’s what happens each afternoon…

That’s not true, my home Internet is always better and more reliable than 4G LTE or HSPA+ I have an AT&T 4G LTE hotspot (AT&T unite hotspot that is suppose to be able to connect up to 10 devices at the same time) with unlimited data and my house Internet. I ran a couple tests and with my home Internet which the download speed is 12 MB/s I can be watching hd videos in up to 5 devices at the sametime perhaps more and I don’t notice any lag or buffering at all, meanwhile with the hotspot with full bars signal and a 24 MBs dowload speed I notice too much buffering by trying to watch HD videos only in 3 devices at the same time, i also tried these tests in different locations to see if there were any differences but I always get the same results, conclusion 4g LTE is okay for one single device if you like to watch hd movies and videos but trying to use it with several devices at the same time is a different story, I guess is all about bandwidth.
