5-Inch Dell Streak Gets Android 3.0 Honeycomb Port

Published

on

While the Dell Streak, which was launched with Android 1.6 at a time when Android 2.2 was starting to become en vogue, was hindered by a dated OS at the time of its release, enterprising developers and hackers have figured out how to port and hack Android 3.0 Honeycomb to the 5-inch slate device. The Streak 5, unlike the Streak 7 for T-Mobile USA, comes with both voice and mobile broadband data, giving the device the uncanny ability to straddle the smartphone and tablet form factor with its larger than smartphone screen size, but too small for a tablet display.

Not a lot of information is currently available, but for eager Streak 5 owners who want to migrate to Android 3.0, hopefully developers will post details on how to hack your own devices. For now, interested users can head on over to the forums at MoDaCo and follow the progress.

In November 2011 I purchased the Dell Streak 5″ and I found it practical and not as cumbersome to carry like the 7″ or a 10″ + from other companies. The Dell Streak performed well during the first 3 months than there were intermittent reception faults on the data site. Mind you I live about 200 meters of the next transmission tower and there should be no difficulty with the reception. Optus franchise in Canberra sent the faulty Dell Streak to the manufacturer and after three weeks I got the item back with the excuse that the product was sent to the wrong service center and it had to be at least for 4 weeks again on the way to Dell for repair. However, in the meanwhile I purchased out a far cheaper 7″ Optus Tab made by ZTE a product that does not fail by showing videos and playing MP3 over the net something that the Dell Streak does not perform correctly. I will try to get either another factory new Dell Streak or I give the item back and get another product. Be aware that the Dell service is miserable and that they are only interested in selling you something but disinterested in a quick and efficient service. I would think twice before investing in this brand.

I have found that Dell service is terrible. They do not have a clue when it comes to customer help regarding service in Australia. I have a Dell Streak with a broken screen, that still works. I have spent ages, many phone calls, enquiries, $60 trying to get someone to fix the so called gorilla glass screen. No one seems to be able to help.  I will never buy another Dell product again even though I really enjoyed using the Streak prior to the glass cracking up.

i bought 2 streaks and 1 broke during the upgrade to 2.2.2 . i send it back to the company where i bought it. it’s been now 13 weeks and still no new phone. every time i call them they say be patient the dell service takes longer than the other company’s. So with other words no more buying dell phones. I think the idea is good. 5 inch tablet phone. it fits great in my hands, watching youtube is also great. but most of the times it hangs when i try multitasking. i hope other company’s will also make 5 inch tablet phones but with bether specs and services.
