Smartphone Storage

Smartphone storage remains an issue as we move towards the end of 2013.

It's nothing new to get less storage than is advertised on the side of a box, but in 2013 we saw smartphone operating systems take up more space than expected, limiting what users can do with their devices.

Samsung is the biggest offender, with the Samsung Galaxy S4 operating system taking up a significant amount of storage and leaving users with phones that fill up too fast and no larger models offered on every carrier.

Samsung allows users to move apps to the SD card, but not all apps will transfer, nor will the biggest parts of the app always make the jump.

Apple isn't able to get out unscathed either. While the company does offer 16Gb, 32Gb and 64GB models of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, the company is pushing out IOS 7 downloads to users who don't want the update, eating up a significant chunk of storage that the users cannot get back without updating.

Most storage device packaging already includes a warning about the actual size of a drive thanks to formatting, but perhaps it's time to tell users how much is available for actual use.
