We never stop hearing about how important Halo games were to the success of the original Xbox. It seems possible that at some point in the distant gamers will talk of Gears of War 4 in the same way. By far, it’s gotten some of the best reviews and review scores we’ve seen of any exclusive Xbox One title.
In Gears of War 4, you’re a solider once again defending civilization from the threat of being overrun. You and your squad do the things that have to be done. You go on the missions too dangerous for others to do. You kill anything that’s not human and walking. Sometimes it’s with bullets. Other times it’s with a few leaps between barriers and bloody sharp object.
The Coalition used this opportunity to update the Gears of War formula in a lot of ways that matter. Sure, the game is better looking than its ever been before, but there’s more to appreciate. Your new squad will help you up and revive you when things get tough. If they aren’t good enough, you can recruit a friend to help you out throughout the campaign. Horde Mode 3.0 is a desperate battle for survival.
Here are some tips for gamers just getting their start with Gears of War 4.
Gears of War 4 Tips: Pay Attention to What Your Squad Has to Say
Gears of War 4 battles can get pretty hectic and insane. All that action sometimes leaves you a bit disoriented. You don’t know what to do next or what you should be preparing for. In those instances, it’s a very good idea to do something so simple that it should come natural to you. Pay attention to what your squad has to say.
If you’ve yet to complete the next objective, your squad will tell you that you haven’t. If you can’t figure out how best to kill a giant spider-like monster, they’ll tell you that too.
At anytime, hold LB for a breakdown of your objectives too.
Gears of War 4 Tips: Customize Your Controller Layout
Gears of War 4 has what I’d consider to be the most-detailed controller customization setup available for any exclusive Xbox game. You can adjust everything from controller sensitivity to which axis does what. The PC of the game has keyboard bindings built into it. This way you don’t need a third-party tool to get the keyboard layout for the game that you want. There’s Xbox One button mapping through the accessories app too.
Gears of War 4 Tips: Only Those that Take Cover Survive
Playing some shooters may have conditioned you to think that rushing into any situation and putting every moving thing down before it has a chance to attack you is the right move. In Gears of War 4, it’s not necessarily the wrong move, but you’ll find yourself dying a lot.
As a cover shooter, Gears of War 4 puts you in situations where ducking behind something may very well be your best way to make it out of an encounter alive. Once behind a barrier, you can get an idea for where your squad is and how you should approach the situation.
Gears of War 4 Tips: Look for Environmental Opportunities
Don’t just keep your eyes on cover. Try to look around for things that you can use to your advantage that are built into the landscape. Some missions have turrets that let you mow down everything in your path a lot easier than it would be for you to take cover and kill everyone individually.
Other times, the buildings themselves become part of the solution. When there’s a bad guy lurking in a place that you can’t reach, stay low and use openings around him to take him out, for example.
Gears of War 4 Tips: Watch the Weather, It Matters
A growing number of games want to elevate video game warfare to a new level. Simulation, they seem to think, is what makes any next-generation first-person shooter worth playing. Gears of War 4 players have a new adversary they probably won’t see coming: the weather.
The Windflares in Gears of War 4 are dangerous and they will change how you approach a situation. Things can go from a summer breeze to an emergency situation quickly.
Gears of War 4 Tips: Use the Right Tools for the Right Job
When something simply won’t die in Gears of War 4, it’s because you’re probably using the wrong tools for the job.
Sometimes this is when listening to your team comes into play. You’re never going to stop the giant spider like thing breaking the Earth’s crust at street level with a regular gun. You’re going to need something a bit more powerful, and your friends will tell you exactly where that something is.
Switching weapons with the Xbox One controller is easy; just press left or right on the D-pad. Find that right weapon to put that enemy down. There’s nothing wrong with scavenging around for the weapons of dead friends either.
Good luck with Gears of War 4. To date, it’s this year’s best Microsoft Xbox exclusive.
