Why You Shouldn’t Buy the Galaxy S6 Right Now

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge are two of the best smartphones you can buy. You just shouldn’t buy them right now. While these two flagships might be extremely tempting, it’s in your best interest to hold off at least for right now. Here’s why.

Earlier this year, Samsung took the stage at Mobile World Congress 2015 and announced its successor to last year’s Galaxy S5. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge arrived to great fanfare as Samsung upped the ante in several areas including design.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were released in April and they immediately became two top contenders in our eyes and in the eyes of many others. We’re now several months removed from their release and they remain excellent smartphones and two devices that you must consider as your next smartphone. You just shouldn’t buy them right now if you can help it.

Right now is a bad time to buy a good phone. This is a line that we’ve used with many friends, family and readers over the past few days as we’ve been peppered with questions about phone upgrades and about the Galaxy S6. We’ve recommended these two phones to a number of people since April but we can’t recommend them right now.

There are a number of reasons for this and we want to dive right into them. Here’s why you shouldn’t buy the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 right now. Key words: Right now. We’re not telling you to avoid these phones completely. We’re telling you that you should hold out for a few more weeks if your situation isn’t a dire one.

Galaxy Note 5 Release Date

There are a number of reasons why we think you should hold off on buying the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge. One of the best reasons though is the imminent arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, a successor to the Galaxy Note 4, and a device that we think will be attractive to those considering the Galaxy S6 as their next device.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed the Galaxy Note 5 nor has it confirmed a specific launch date. But thanks to rumors, we know a whole lot about the device including its supposed announcement date.

The Galaxy Note 5 launch date is expected to take place on August 12th. That’s a lot earlier than many people expected. Samsung’s typically used IFA to announce its Galaxy Note but it looks like the company wants to get a head start on Apple and the iPhone 6s Plus.

Multiple reports are pointing to a launch in August so there’s reason to believe that Samsung’s planning an early launch. That benefits those of you looking into a new phone right now. It also helps that the Galaxy Note 5 release date is rumored for August 21st. Again, much earlier than normal.

Note-5-3

What this means is that in a few weeks, you should have another Galaxy smartphone option at your disposal and a solid one at that. The Galaxy Note series is always solid and this year’s Galaxy Note 5 sounds like it could be a blown up version of the Galaxy S6. With an S Pen. And some other bells and whistles.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, an S Pen stylus that looks and feels like a real pen, a massive 4,000 mAh battery, a brand new Exynos 7 processor that’s backed by 4GB of RAM, and a premium design that mirrors the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

It will be bigger than the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge and maybe more expensive but we still think it’s worth the wait. Galaxy Notes only come once a year which means that you’re in the perfect position. Wait if you can and then weigh the Galaxy Note 5 next to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. An informed decision is always the best decision.

Galaxy S6 Edge+

The Galaxy Note 5 will reportedly have company and this company will be intriguing to those of you who have been looking at buying the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Samsung is supposedly readying a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge dubbed Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. It won’t be a Galaxy Note, which means no S Pen, but it will come with the same curved display found on the Galaxy S6 Edge. Only it will be much larger: 5.7-inches.

Note-5-8

It’s expected to feature the same Quad HD resolution as the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge and it will reportedly feature a number of other high-end features including a big battery, 16MP camera, and more. This photo leak will show you what the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will look like next to the smaller model.

This large version of the Galaxy S6 Edge is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Note 5. It’s also expected to be released in August alongside the Galaxy Note 5. We think they’re both worth waiting for.

iPhone 6s Release Inching Closer

They won’t run Android but we still think the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are worth waiting for if you can manage.

Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are two of the Galaxy S6’s top rivals. The iPhone 6 Plus (and its 5.5-inch display) is a top Galaxy Note competitor as well. The company is rumored to have two new iPhones on the way, a 4.7-inch iPhone 6s and a 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus. Both are expected to feature numerous upgrades and both are expected to arrive within the next few weeks.

Note-5-7

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are expected to feature new display technology, improved rear and front-facing cameras, iOS 9, and more. Essentially, they’ll be souped up versions of the current iPhone models. That’s a good thing because the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are two of the best phones out.

We still haven’t been able to nail down an announcement date but there’s a good chance that Apple will announce them in September. That’s not long at all.

Keep in mind, the prices of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will likely drop right before and right after the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s released giving you two more affordable alternatives to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

OnePlus Two Launch

If you’re looking to buy much sooner than that, well, then we suggest waiting until at least July 27th. On that day, OnePlus will announce its brand new OnePlus Two, a successor to last year’s popular OnePlus One and a device that will likely be attractive to those of you that want a high-powered device without the added cost.

OnePlus-two-price

The OnePlus Two launch is confirmed for the 27th and it’s there that we’ll find out more about the rumored device. We’re hearing that it will feature a 5.5-inch display with tons of horsepower. What’s more is that the company has confirmed that the device will be priced under $450 USD off-contract. That’s cheaper than the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

Last year’s OnePlus One was a pleasant surprise and it will be interesting to see if the company can repeat its magic in 2015. We only have a few days before we find out.

Google’s Nexus Plans

Google’s expected to release at least one new Nexus smartphone this year, maybe two. The two devices sound like excellent alternatives to top smartphones including the Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 so if you aren’t in love with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, you might want to think about waiting.

Nexus-6-2015

Nexus 2015 rumors point to a new Nexus 5 from LG and a larger Nexus phone from Chinese manufacturer Huawei. Both devices are expected to be powerful successors to the Nexus 6. They’re also expected to be announced alongside the Android M release which is rumored for August but might come in September. That’s not a long wait at all.

The Nexus program still has a lot of appeal and LG’s Nexus 5 is one of our favorite phones. We think these releases are worth waiting for.

Galaxy S6 Deals

We’re already seeing deals for the regular Galaxy S6 and we should see some more emerge in the next few weeks. Bigger and better deals perhaps.

Once the Galaxy Note 5 arrives, we should see retailers and perhaps carriers offer some deals on the regular Galaxy S6. We’re also expecting big deals after the iPhone 6s launch as retailers push to make the Galaxy S6 an attractive alternative to Apple’s new flagship.

If you buy the Galaxy S6 right now, you’re probably going to be overpaying for it.

Galaxy S6 Edge Deals

Same thing with the Galaxy S6 Edge though it’ll probably sting even worse. This is an expensive phone, $299.99 some places, and a lot of you won’t want to pay that much and you shouldn’t.

While we’ve seen a number of Galaxy S6 deals emerge we haven’t seen as many for the curved variant. And that’s precisely why we think it’s worth holding out, to see if this expensive phone gets a little cheaper. We think it will with the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy Note 5 and iPhone 6s Plus on the way.

10 Things to Do Before the Galaxy Note 5 Release Date

Research Your Galaxy Note 5 Storage Needs

Research Your Galaxy Note 5 Storage Needs

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 isn't official yet but that doesn't mean that you can't prepare for its arrival. There are a number of things you can do ahead of Samsung's announcement and release and deciding on how much storage you might need is one of them.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 design is reportedly going to be similar to the Galaxy S6's. That means premium build materials but it also means no microSD card slot for expanded storage. If this is true, and it probably is, it's going to put pressure on you to figure out how much internal storage you'll need.

If Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 doesn't feature expandable storage, it'll likely come with several storage options. Those storage options will vary in price. You don't want to pay for storage that you're never going to need so you'll want to think about this ahead of time.

Take a look at your current device, think about how you might use your next phone, and estimate how much storage it will take to feel comfortable. For some of you, it might be 32GB. For others, it might be a 128GB of space.

We don't know how much the Galaxy Note 5 will come with yet but chances are we'll see some sort of combo featuring 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.

Too late, I already have an S6. And I despise it. It’s a major downgrade from the S5 in terms of real-world use (not waterproof, you can never change the battery, no SD storage, no FM radio..)
