An HDMI pass-through built into the rear of the Xbox One allows users watch live television. Rather than replace cable entirely, the feature is meant to make enjoy television easier for everyone. Users can change channels with just their voice, and Xbox Live tracks what shows are trending and popular. Strictly for those with cable, it’s was seriously impressive when Microsoft announced it. The OneGuide, for example, is part of the Xbox SmartGlass app for iPhone, Android and Windows.

Over time the company has supplemented that feature with other huge upgrades in the live television. A dedicated Xbox One Digital TV Tuner lets users around the world watch broadcast channels. When coupled with SmartGlass users can stream what’s on their television directly to anything with the SmartGlass app installed. Users can pause a program and catch up later. In the United States Microsoft partnered with Hauppauge to produce a similar tuner.

For the cable cutters, there is Sling TV. Starting at $20 a month, Sling TV lets users stream cable channels over the internet. Everything from sports to the latest shows on AMC are available. Sling TV with the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner is practically all some users need.
