A GBM Shortcut: Taking A Look at BlueTooth Headsets

- Warner Crocker

In what I hope will be a series over the next several weeks, This GBM Shortcut takes a look at some different Bluetooth headsets that work not only with mobile phones, but also Tablet PCs and UMPCs. I take a look at the Motorola H700, which I’ve been using for quite some time now, and also the Aliph Jawbone. The Jawbone is newer to the scene and an intriguing looking headset and in many ways is all about design, but it also offers a noise cancelling function that from my testing appears to work very well. It provides up to 6 hours talk time and up to 120 hours of standby time, both of which seem pretty accurate by my testing. The H700 has been around for awhile and has been my old standby, but I’m experimenting with the Jawbone to see if I’m ready to move on, even with its steeper price tag of $120 or so, depending on where you shop.

Thanks for the short, Warner. I thought I might share my experience with the jawbone. I recently bought one and used it for about a week, but found that it really didn't work for me. It sounds like you got better results than I did, which surprises me because I think my main problem was because I have a beard. Because that little button has to sit on your cheek or jawbone, I found that my beard (even though it is not very long) kept it from contacting to my cheek. Consequently, many times while I was on the phone, people would not be able to understand me because they heard the sound of my beard rubbing against the microphone. Maybe it was just me, but from their promotional material I was more hopeful and in my case the results were somewhat disappointing.

Brian,

I've worried about my beard interfering as well, but so far I haven't had that problem.

Warner,

Thanks for the great "short." Very practical.

Like you, I wear glasses, so your comments are esp. helpful.

1) Could you comment on how well these units (and future units you review) do for people with glasses (comfort, how well does the unit stay in position, or does it bounce around, creating problems?, etc.)

2)I'm looking for a unit that will work with both a cell phone and my Lenovo x61t. Thanks for the comments on how well the units do with both.

Mark
