ASUS R2E on BestBuy.com!

- Sierra Modro

ASUS R2EAn alert reader posted the link to the ASUS R2E available on Best Buy! It shows as "Backordered, Usually leaves our warehouse in 1-2 weeks time," so maybe that bodes well on a release happening really soon.

Price listed is $1099.99. Higher than I would prefer, but not wholly unexpected. It ships with Vista Home Premium.

The model listed on Best Buy seems like a pretty standard configuration. Interestingly, the ad claims the memory is expandable to 4GB. Given that the ASUS website lists 1GB as soldered onboard, I'm not sure how Best Buy is able to put on 4GB. Now, if it has confirmed 2GB as the max memory, I would have both believed it and been very, very happy.

Product Features

Ah thank you.

Either way, sales of devices like this at big box retailers is a good thing.

I read this review, and purchased the R2E from Best Buy,(it arrived at my Michigan door in 3 days from their Findlay Ohio location). I was excited to think it had such great features, & was planning to add RAM, Best Buy had a fantastic sale on RAM. When I got it, I was amazed at the great handwriting recognition & inking, no vectoring, & the screen is really crisp, & clear. After loading the included GPS MS Streets software major lag & constant hangs surfaced, the machine just froze up from lack of RAM. More annoying, it began to take upwards of 6 minutes to even boot up, and finger print scanning slowed to a 3 to 4 minute ordeal. Knowing VISTA demands at least 2gigs of RAM, & reading about the RAM sale, I cheerfully took the unit to my local Best Buy to have more RAM installed, that is when we all discovered that 'my' R2E could not be upgraded! The Geek Squad was embarrassed, they called ASUS Tech's direct & discovered, that on this version, sold by Best Buy, the RAM & Motherboard are not upgradeable!! I kept it a few more days, trying to love it, un-installed the Microsoft trips & streets, and the office 2003 suite I had loaded, nothing I tried made the thing perform any faster, the more I used it the slower it got until it finally just froze for 30+ minutes. I hated to give up on the R2E, but any amount of money is too much to pay something that won't work.
I still want the HTC Shift, but it also ships with 1gig of RAM with the same processor this ASUS R2E, can the Shift perform any better?
