An iTablet in January 2008?

- Warner Crocker

ITabletOk, before anyone goes crazy, let’s consider the source here. Appletell is linking to information from LoopRumors, and that name alone should make anyone pull out their skeptic hat. But it is a Friday, it is December, and let’s take a look at the speculation shall we?

LoopRumors is reporting that Apple will unveil an Apple iTablet that will be an entirely new class of device, aimed at those who arleady have a Mac. It will have its own variant of Leopard, geared to the features of the device. Other info says it will contain a solid state drive, a mini-DVD reader (interesting), and get this: users supposedly will be able to interact with the devcie using both sides of the Tablet. Of course it would have multi-touch capability as well. LoopRumors is leaning on a January 2008 release, most likely at MacWorld.

Again, keep your skeptics hat on, some, all, or none of this may be as real or imagined as the rendering accompanying this article. But we’re hearing more and more about an Apple Tablet surfacing in January. I’d love to see it come true, especially if it is along the lines of the companinon devcie this new speculation seems to suggest. That would go well with the new iMac I just bought for my office.

The iTablet certainly has the right idea. I will wait until it actually is December before I start to get excited.

I look forward to the prospect of Steve Jobs wearing a sport jacket, since now there would be a reason to do so in order to carry an iTablet.

Better islate than inever.

Haha, Mickey. Good catch. I've been enmeshed in directing a Christmas show since October, so it's been December for me for awhile. ;)

If the "announcement" isn't going to happen until Jan, why would it matter that it's December? (or not)

A mini-DVD reader? That would have sounded silly, except that Apple apparently is developing an adapter that allows 8cm discs to play in devices designed for 12cm discs, such as Apple's standard slot-loading drives. Details at AppleInsider. Interesting that these rumors would come out on the same day.

Dear God, please be true. There would be no preferable tablet device to my mind. Enough with this fitting Vista where it barely fits. Thinking about using Back to Mac to interact easily with my home system makes me smile with joy.

How many times has this happened over the years only to have turned out to be a false rumor?

I can only hope Apple does for the tablet market what they did for the phone market...Now, if only they make sure to bring all the features it needs, and not leave out vital stuff like they did with iPhone (MMS, multiple recipient SMS, etc..) then I would be all too happy to make it my next computer.

but either way, they can probably make it out to be the most desirable tablet in the world, despite any failings it might come with. No tablet will ever be perfect, but Apple definitely has a knack for making sweet design mesh together with ease of use; at the very least, they'd give the market the drop of fresh blood that it needs to get the shark tank moving and cranking out better products.
