Any Zoho Users Out There?

- Rob Bushway

Zoho I've been experimenting with Zoho for the past week, and have found it to be surprisingly powerful and full featured. For working in the cloud and living mobile, Zoho seems to offer an impressive offering. I'm so impressed, that for the next two weeks, I'm going to go full time with Zoho for word processing documents, spreadsheets, notebooks, and more.  I'm going to chronicle my experiences here on a daily basis, so you'll be learning with me as I give this a go. My first task is to email all of my Word documents in so I have access to them from within Writer.

First thoughts:

  • I find it quite ironic that Zoho utilizes Google Gears for its offline mode.
  • I wish Zoho had a way to import multiple documents rather than having to email them in.
  • Project looks interesting. Unfortunately, I don't see a way to access other Zoho Writer documents I've created and associate them to a Project. I can create new documents from within Project and import documents from my harddrive, but not associate existing Zoho documents. Strange.
  • Zoho Sheet handles copying and pasting between spreadsheets much better than Google Spreadsheets.

Any Zoho users out there want to share their experiences with me, and others, as I dive in?

I've used Zoho before. When using it from there site its a great replacement... for basic tasks. I used it for a while in undergrad when I was in a bind. It was hard to get the formatting down and for it to print the way I wanted to. I would have issues making study guides with numbered lists. I might have to go back and add something in and it had a hard time reformatting the numbers. They do have a Zoho plugin for word. It's works intermittently. But you can save your word doc to Zoho and it uploads it for you and can pull down Zoho doc's into word.

I teach high school math in a virtual classroom. I am constantly looking for ways for my students to share their assignments with me. They usually use Word and upload their assignment to the school Web site. I then download the assignment and ink my comments using my Tablet PC.

Word handles inking very well. If an assignment is done in an other application, I will print it to OneNote, ink there, create a PDF, and e-mail the assignment back to the student. Ink'd comments upload and download well to Google docs.

It would save considerable steps to be able to ink my comments on a shared document. I do not see any Zoho applications that provide this functionality. Zoho Writer does not seem to import Word documents very well, when they include ink or graphics. Despite Zoho's broad functionality, this is a shop-stopper for me.

Rob,

Connect your Zoho account with a box.net account and you'll have 1gig (free) of space to upload files. The nice thing is that you can bulk upload to box.net, and the integration between zoho and box.net is so tight that you can launch a zoho session inside box.net, edit an office file, and save it back to box.net.

I've been trying Zoho on my iPhone. Nice interface, easy to read, but I cannot "edit" on the device. Indeed, I can't find any of the "online Office" tools that allow editing on the iPhone.

I tried the CRM a few weeks ago. It's ok but not customizable enough for my needs. I ended up purchasing, (and loving), Prophet CRM).

@Rob : Nice post & glad that you've started using Zoho! We just brought in Zoho Projects into the Zoho single sign-on system. We will sure integrate Zoho Projects with apps like Zoho Writer like you want (associating Writer docs to a Project etc)

@AMartin02 : Sorry that you faced those issue. Zoho Writer is continuously under development and the issues you say might have gotten addressed already. Test drive Zoho Writer and now and please see whether it has improved since you last visit. We have brought in features like Page View, enhanced Print options and the the Microsoft Office plug-in got updated recently as well.

@Tom : Zoho Writer has the 'Add Comments' functionality. You can type your comments adjacent to a chosen phrase or sentence. More on this topic here.

@Bill : This is due to an inherent issue with Safari's iPhone version which fails to render the keypad for a HTML editor. Hope this will get addressed soon & you should be able to edit documents on the iPhone soon.

In my opinion Zoho Projects have lots of bugs. I'm staying with Wrike. It's got email intergration and other useful stuff, that Zoho does not yet have ;)
