Axiotron ModBook Headed Our Way - We Can't Wait!!!

- Rob Bushway

Axiotron ModBook When news first got out in January 2007 about Axiotron's ModBook, yours truly was beyond ecstatic at the thought of an Apple-based Tablet. We'll, we've been waiting ever since to get our hands on one, and am pleased to say that Axiotron notified me yesterday that the ModBook is on its way to us!

Here's the kicker: Axiotron configured boot-camp with Vista, so in addition to covering the Mac OS X side of the tablet, I'll also be checking out how the ModBook holds up as a Windows-based Tablet PC.  With 512 levels of pressure sensitivity, built-in GPS, and built-in SuperDrive, it ought to be fun. I have a friend who is an awesome graphic artist, so I'll be getting his impressions of it from that perspective as well.

There will finally be a review on the ModBook Tablet from a site that knows Tablet PCs - GottaBeMobile.com!

Looking forward to hearing a review by true Tablet users! :) The one downer for me right off the bat is that it doesn't support screen rotation, at least not on the Mac side. Funny how my Mac does, but only on the *external* monitor. Have fun!

I have had the ModBook for a little over a month. It have the fastest model, 2.4 GH, 4 GB of RAM, and a 200 GB hard drive at 7500 RPM.

It is a great computer with all of the advantages of a Mac. It is incredibly fast at opening programs, runs the new MacSpeech voice recognition program extremely well.

I have been a tablet PC user since they first came out, but switched over to a Mac after several Vista issues led me to the determination that life was too short to continue that route.

The ModBook is very well built, but heavy. The included DVD is helpful, particularly with digitizing a large music collection, but for portability I would prefer to save the weight.

The ink well handwriting recognition program works well for me as long as I remember to print the characters. InkBook allows me to write and save hand written notes in cursive.

However, there is no comparable program to OneNote. Like wise, the means of controlling a tablet is not as well developed or nearly as sophisticated as that for the Tablet PC

However, it is a pleasure to use the Mac with almost no maintenance worries and reliable operation. My first ModBook had a digitizer problem which required replacement, but this one works well.

Because of the way and extent of my use of a computer, the cost is less of a factor than how well it works. The ModBook works very well and I can put up with a greater weight, a lesser notetaking program and a less sophisticated method of controlling the computer by pen. MacSpeech solved the problem of lack of an accurate voice recognition program.

tallysw try doing this on your Modbook using MSWord 2008. I sent Rob some a little bit ago. I know its not OneNote but it might just work for the meantime.
