Back On The Bag Hunt

- Matt Faulkner

image A while back I was brought to an end of my hunt with a bag that was given to me by the wonderful people at Tom Bihn.  It's probably the longest I have had a bag in a long time... but the the new addition of my 'regular' laptop - I have to be on the hunt again... :(

The bag I have is the Ego - and there is a Super Ego that will work for me - that is a serious consideration as the Ego bag has been wonderful.  But, I haven't been on the hunt for a full sized bag in a while so I am asking you, the GBM readers, if there is something you have or a brand that I should check out!  I will say that I am not a Backpack type of person, more of the 'messenger' type of guy.

It also have to fit my companion Tablet PC in there too...  I have all but decided that the LS800 is perfect for me to take to my meetings, sit by me at my desk, couch surfing and child prodigy device.

So, are there any suggestions out there??

Coincidently, I too am looking for a new bag (I’m actually going from messenger to backpack). I’ve seen some great bags by Booq (http://www.booqbags.com/) and a friend recommended I check out some LL Bean bags. Other than that I’ve been lost and can’t wait to see what others recommend so I can compare before I purchase.

I actually downsized awhile ago from a large messenger bag to smaller sling/shoulder bags (Tom Bihn Buzz and Ristretto bags respectively). My previous messenger was a Swiss Army/Victorinox bag. It was quite sturdy and had tons of storage. I think I got it at Staples.

I too have always tried to find the "right bag". I am currently using a bbp hybird backpack/messenger bag. They have differnt styles and colors, but always in a "hybird" form. So far it is one of the only bags that hasn't maddened me in some way.

I have had a couple of Crumpler bags and they were very good. Honestly though, I don't think that you will find a better bag than the Tom Bihn bags. They are fantastic and very well thought out. Timbuk2 also makes some very nice bags. I have a backpack bag of theirs that I still use from time to time.

I am using the Osprey Torque. The Torque and Transit are two briefcases with messenger bag styling, but with one key difference: Each has semi-rigid sides. These are great for overhead compartments - my bag contents don't get crushed when people over-stuff around the bag. Definitely worth a look.

Consider the Cargo Messenger style bag from Waterfield/www.sfbags.com. Not only is it sturdy and attractive, but they come with a lifetime warranty, awesome customer support, and they're made in the US. You pay a little more, but you'll feel good doing it.

The Torque has worked very well for me. IT doesn't have as extensive of an interior pochet set-up as the Ego does, but it can keep my iphone, x61 and various plugs all sorted, plus room for a couple of hard cover books and a file or two.

The transit is HUGE. You could pack for a weekend trip in it.

I had the Osprey Torque and it was great, but the new (and made from recycled fibers!) messenger bags are just awesome. I have the Elroy. Best thing about it is the instant access laptop zipper -- great for those airport security situations. Plus all the pockets are now much more conveniently laid out.
