CES 2008: A Look at USB Duet from PLX Technologies

- Rob Bushway

USB Duet During the Tablet PC meetup at CES, I got the opportunity to meet with Alex Chow of PLX Technologies. He demonstrated a great USB utility, called USB Duet, that adds a USB client port to a mobile pc and enables the port to have multiple functions, like sharing files and printers. This is a great solution for those needing to sync files to a main desktop pc.

Check the video demonstration below, as well as those on the USB Duet page.

You gotta love the TC1100.

I have an EasySync cable that came with the Asus R2H. It is a USB-USB connector that looks like it does the same thing you demonstrated. Or am I missing something?

USB Duet leverages many of the USB standards that are already supported by many devices in the market. Specifically for USB Duet HD (mass storage function)... it allows a Duet HD-enabled mobile PC to share files with any USB Hosts (e.g. any PC, Xbox360, etc.)! Duet HD also allows you to choose which files to share and which to keep private, unlike the EasySync cable, which exposes all the files on BOTH PC systems. Duet HD also uses a standard USB cable (which many people have from their digital camera), which makes it much more flexible than having to use the EasySync cable only.

Finally, USB Duet is not limited to just the HD/mass storage function. The same USB client port can be used as a network port or a docking port. Find out more from the link Rob provided above!

hmmm... I guess for certain people with very specific application the card/software might make sense. As a built in on a future machine I would be happy to find it and might use it from time to time.
It is a problem with many solution though.
I could just transfer files with a USB key or with a webdav application or with shared folders over wifi or ethernet or an sd card perhaps or NAS setup...
Many of these items in the mobile space are either built in now or are something I already carry with me.
Many of the home solutions are already being implemented by many people.
A male to male usb cable is not something in my daily mobile kit right now and as it brings nothing extra to the party probably isn't something I would add.
I don't know.
I guess for most people I see this as a nice solution sure; but, not to a critical problem as their are already solutions out there.
It might make sense for some specialty applications where you are regularly moving large amounts of data onto a mobile device and then need to share it out in the wild or once you get home and don't have regular home network share setup. Some photographers or videographers I guess.

Think of work environments where you want to have files available to be quickly put from your PC onto a mobile worker's tablet. The worker can hook up and download what he needs without seeing every file on the PC. Things like that. Also for friends who want to let friends see/download photos, movies or music, choosing what they want, without letting the friend have access to your file of bad love poetry.
