CES 2008: Interview With HP's Stacy Wolff

- Rob Bushway

While we were at the BlogHaus last night, Stacy Wolff, HP's Director of Notebook Product Design, stopped by. Stacy was instrumental in the design of the HP's TC1x000 Tablet PC series, including the current 2710p. It was a great to get some insight and background history into the design of the TC, and how HP got to where they are today. If you listen closely at the beginning, you'll learn where the name "TC" came from....

Enjoy!

By the way, I've had a couple people ask about the equipment we used to record and produce the interview:

  • OQO Model 02 - used it to edit, produce, and upload while at the BlogHaus. It did take about 40 minutes to encode the video after editing, but given the mobility aspect, I couldn't be happier.
  • Flip Video Ultra with a Monopod for recording the video and audio.

Excellent, I really enjoyed this video in particular Rob - thank you.

Very good interview. I love hearing how things are designed from the companies point of view. And I thought the video and audio quality of the podcast was very good. Could you list what specific hardware you used to record this interview and how you set it up for the interview? Was it the OQO, the flip or camera? And what did you use for the microphone. It was really very good for a mobile, on the spot interview. Keep up the good work.

Thanks!

I used an OQO Model 02 and a Flip Video Ultra on a MonoPod. I produced the video on the OQO ( took about 40 minutes to encode it after editing, though:-( ). We are really pleased with this set up -very mobile and very good results!

did you happen to ask her what the logic was behind the lack of buttons on the 2710 screen, the pen that keeps popping out, the irritating placement of the fingerprint reader and the the logic of couplign a 4200 rpm drive with a 1.2ghz processor?

How soon would a new model be coming out? I am needing to upgrade from my TC1100 to something I can edit short videos with, Office, Vista, etc. I like the 2000X, but I REALLY like the slice battery/optical drive slice concept, so I would like to know if it would be worth the wait to potentially get the best of both those worlds.

I don't understand why HP doesn't start approaching all the battery designs like the 2710p. Why isn't it this way for the 2000x ?

Thanks for a great interview. This is probably my favorite so far. This one, and the surface demo with Warner drooling over the wine. :)

Darn it! Why did I listen to that! I was all set to buy a 2710p after CES but he hinted at some cool stuff that might make into the refresh of the 2710p. Soon?

Rob I know you're sworn to secrecy, but did you get a feeling that a refresh correcting some of the issues you started to bring up as well as adding some functionality such as touch might be on the way soon?

Thanks! Awesome interview! Stacy really sold me on HP as listening to customers and having a commitment to our space.
