I dont’ think anything will slow Asus down. Even changing brands from the Asus Eee PC to just the Eee PC. The Asus 900 Eee PC is just rolling out and now comes word of the 901 Eee PC. The 901 Eee PC is running Intel’s Atom chipset and also contains Bluetooth. Note also the price is inching up to $650 or so. Launch is set for June 3 at Computex.

Interesting. Looks like the differences between black and white models of the Asus Eee PC aren’t just black and white. Apparently the keyboards and keys are also a little different.

DailyTech is reporting that Intel will face a shortage of the Atom chipset possibly extending into Q3 of 2008. Apparently demand from Asus with their Eee PC line and the “I want to be like Asus” club is quite heavy. Asus’ CEO is quoted in the article as saying,
“Unlike our competitors, we use both Intel Atom processors and Intel Celeron M processors, so this will give us a stronger advantage in guaranteeing shipments"
Of course the article mentions that this could be an opening for VIA and their Isiah chipset. The article also links to this info about Dell’s entry into the ULCPC market.

jkkmobile has his hands on the Asus Eee PC 900 and has put together an unboxing video of Asus’ newest. (Well at least it is the newest this week.)

Just as the Asus 900 with a 9 inch screen (actually 8.9 inch) is starting to trickle into the hands of users, word comes down from Asus that they are working on a 10 inch screen model. In announcing the 10 inch screen plans, CEO Jerry Shen said that it could be out later this year. He also said that there won’t be an Eee PC with a 12 inch screen.

Another video for everyone this morning. This time it's of the new Asus' EeePC 900. There have been a quite a few pictures and other news of this new (and larger screen) EeePC, but this is the first one that I have seen that demonstrates the 'multitouch' trackpad. If you want to skip over everything else just to see the trackpad and how it operates, go to about 3:50 in the video. I bet Warner's wife will be wanting one of these really soon...

When my wife, Thomasin, got her hands on the Asus Eee PC back in December, she had some reservations about the tiny little ultra-portable that shook the mobile space. But she seems to have overcome those as it is now difficult to pry the Eee PC out of her hands. So, I was very anxious and eager to hear her reactions to the new HP 2133 Mini-Note. Last night I had her check it out and that's what you'll find in this GBM InkShow: her unvarnished and first reactions to the Mini-Note versus the Eee PC. Thomasin is decidedly not a geek, as you can tell by her names for certain things, but I think her first blush look at devices offer OEMs a more than interesting look at what they have in their devices. Looks like Acer is also catching ULCPC fever and is planning on rolling out a few mobile minded devices for the second half of 2008. According to DigjTimes, Acer will be debuting both a 8.9 inch screen model (the Aspire) and a 12.1 inch screen model (the Slim Gemstone Aspire) with a top price of $450. The report also mentions that Asus is looking at 12.1 inch screens. The chart below from DigiTimes shows some interesting comparisons.

If you’re looking to pick up an Asus Eee PC running Windows XP you might want to pay a visit to Best Buy. If you read he specs the 7 inch screen model (the next generation will have a larger screen) is not only available on the web, but also for select store pickup, and the XP version costs the same as the Linux version, $399.

Digitimes is reporting that the R50 UMPC might be shipping before June of this year and it looks like we might see Linux and Vista flavors. The curious statement in the DigiTimes report is that it says the price will be above US $500. Don’t we usually see that listed as below and not above? Oh, well, I guess that gives them some head room and a fudge factor.

This is also the first techology report that I’ve seen where a company saying that the sub-prime financial crunch will affect shipments. Intriguing.

Look out. The Asus Eee PC has turned the ultra-portable and ultra-mobile market on its ear already, and with reports that the Windows XP version will hit Best Buy around April 9, I imagine we’ll be seeing some more head turning soon. Price point for the 4G version? $399.

Unless you’re jkkmobile or have followed his modding of the Asus Eee PC to add a touch screen, you have been doing without touch on the device that has changed the ultra portable market. You’ve probably also been frustrated by the rumors of a possible touch screen version. Well, there’s more speculating afoot (a touch?). DigiTimes is reporting that Asus is looking at a touch screen version (also with GPS support) possibly to be released this May or June. According to that same DigiTimes article, you’ll be looking at a $500 price point to get your touch on.

jkkmobile and Steve “Chippy” Paine, the CeBit boys, managed to get quite a bit of good video at CeBit, including this one of the Asus R70a and the R50 UMPCs. Between the Asus UMPCs and the GigaByte M700 UMPC, at least there are some slate (meaning no keyboard) UMPCs about to be on the market. Another nice thing for Inkers, is that the R70a digitizer is “hard touch” screen which should make Inking palatable. At least that was the case for me with the “hard touch” screen on the Asus R2H.
Note the size differences between the two.

Several UMPCs have been in the news lately, some in a positive manner, and some not so.
First up, The Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium UMPC appears to be shipping from a few retailers and getting into users hands. Head over to the Origami Project forums for a list of retailers and at least one early reaction. We got a chance to check out the new Q1 at CES and you can check out those videos here and here.
The WiBrain, which has captured quite a bit of attention due to its lower price point, looks like it might have a Linux variant shipping at some point in the future according to UMPCPortal.
And the Asus R2E seems to suffer from one of the main problems that the earlier Asus R2H did: CRAPWARE. According to this post users are just as frustrated to discover during their OOBE (out of box experience) that they need to spend way too much time uninstalling a lot of the junk software that Asus installs on the device. Fascinating, when you think that the Asus Eee PC, boots in a such quick time (yeah, I know what the differences are) and receives such high marks for that from many quarters. You’d think that the folks at Asus wouldn’t be so tone deaf when it comes to hearing the many user complaints about CRAPWARE.

The man behind the UMPC, Otto Berkes, has written a blog entry about his thoughts on the Asus Eee PC that is worth a read. The title? Sweet Spot. Here’s an excerpt:
"The Eee adheres to some of the core tenets of the ultra-mobile PC – a low-cost, highly mobile, full-fidelity companion computer. In fact, the Eee PC hits one of the key UMPC targets dead on; there’s one place where all of the other UMPC products missed – price."
Hmmm? We’ve been saying that here for awhile. Check out Otto’s full post here.
