I have been going over the TabletKiosk G840XT for a while now and have been pretty happy with what I have seen so far!. The unit still feels really light for a rugged unit, that's for sure! I didn't think I would like the 'number pad' at first, but after having it on the unit, it's a nice addition. This InkShow is Part 1 of 2. I needed to make sure I had a few shots of the device before I started to beat it up and break it right :)
In this InkShow I take the G840XT for an spin looking mostly at the software. I add a couple of comments on the exterior that I didn't mention in the Shortcut I filmed a couple of weeks ago. I go over some of the software that is specific to the machine and I also take it out on a quick GPS test.

When you don’t have what you need, some of us create it for ourselves. That’s what harakan, a GBM Forum user, has done with the Vista Tablet Button driver on the TabletKiosk Sahara i440D Tablet PC.
As the standard Tablet Button driver provided by TabletKiosk for Vista is pretty limited, I have put together a replacement. This provides many new features, such as a one-button, touch-optimised task switcher, multiple functions per button (based on short or long-presses), and application-specific functions.
harakan has also provided a list of the standard default button definitions and how to edit them if you’re so inclined. Check out the full post in the GBM Forums.

This shortcut I am taking a quick overview of the TabletKiosk GETAC G840XT Rugged unit. In the video, I go over the specs of the unit that was sent to me to review. After the specs, we take a look at the outside of the unit - ports, pen, buttons and feel. I am currently finishing up some testing using the GPS unit that I will post up too. So far, it's been really fun to have this unit out in the field. Enjoy the shortcut. Expect more video soon!!

I have been playing with the TabletKiosk GETAC G840XT for a week or so and thought I would put up some of my initial thoughts.
- Very solid feel
- Light for being so tough - or at least 'feels' light to me
- GPS works good for being integrated and without an antenna (I have some video of that coming up)
- I wish my eval had TPC edition on there - but that is a special order as most will be using just the touch feature
- Touch screen work very well - and the stylus strap is like a elastic cord, it actually is a nice feature
- IMO it's a 'hard' touch screen - but that has been good while out testing field usage
- Very surprised at the processor speed - for 800 mhz it zips along pretty well with XP
- It made it through the shower without harm...
- Great 'touch' friendly menu system to changing volume, brightness and turning on and off system components
- I've been having fun dropping it in front of co-workers
- It does feel very weird to know that I am dropping a machine that is so expensive - kind of like when we were all at CES
- Would like to have had some type of integrated tool for removing the battery
If there is anything you would like to know about the machine just let me know!! This week is going to be jam packed with information about this unit!

I have just uploaded a set of 12 photos to our Flickr page. These pictures show all sides of the G840XT and adn some close up shots of the keys on the front of the unit. You can browse through the smaller images, but they all were uploaded in high res so you can take a really good look if you desire! Check them out and let me know if there is anything you want to know about the unit!!

I couldn't wait to post up here that I have this GETAC TabletKiosk unit out of the box. I already have a bunch of images and a quick video showing a walk around of the device. Even had the GPS fired up for a few... There will be tons of video and images (I will post on Flickr soon) over the next couple of weeks as I give this things the 'CES' rugged test :). Below is a quick shot of the unit - stay tuned for more real soon! Click on the image for a full High Res version

Ohhhh This is going to be fun!! Tablet Kiosk is now shipping their full mil-spec Tablet PC, and guess who is going to get to play with it? I've been excited about this one since I got to throw it on the ground at CES!! There are 2 things I liked about this Tablet PC 1) It felt REALLY light for a full mil-spec Tablet PC 2) I got to drop it on the ground (and maybe get to do it for you again??0 :). Look for more on this rugged Tablet PC soon. Well, don’t look for TabletKiosk’s Gail Levy on an upcoming episode of CSI New York, but she did get to spend some time behind the scenes of the show on a recent trip. She talks about it on her blog, Mobility Matters, in her ongoing series chronicling her Tablet Tuesdays. She drops the news that CSI NY is going paperless and we’ll be seeing the cast carrying around Tablets for the remainder of the season. That should be cool. My wife is a big fan of the entire CSI gang of shows, and I enjoy seeing them intergrate some pretty amazing technology on those shows. Although, I do wonder where the funds come from in always strapped municipal budgets to pay for all that high tech gear.
But I do have a question and a slight bone to pick with Gail in her ongoing Tablet Tuesdays. She says she didn’t have a Tablet Tuesday last week because she was at a trade show. Now, Gail, take it from the Gang here at GBM, trade shows and conferences are the perfect environments to take advantage of the mobility that Tablet PCs and UMPCs can offer. We’re going to have to really get Gail trained in right so that her Tablet Tuesdays can turn into Tablet Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, etc….

I found this interesting. TabletKiosk’s Gail Levy declared that she was going to spend this past Tuesday as Tablet Tuesday. Using her Sahara slate Tablet PC she was going to stay away from her desk, completely unwired. In her follow up, she reports that she wasn’t able to be away from her desk as much as she wanted but she kept true to her mission and stayed undocked and untethered all day. I thought this quote was telling:
I felt silly sitting at my desk, chatting on the phone and writing on my tablet. Using the tablet this way didn't make me more mobile, it made me feel stupid. Next week, I need to make sure that I get myself away from my desk.
Check out the rest of her findings on her blog, Mobility Matters.

What's better than a Tablet PC? A Tablet PC that gets a lot of eye balls! TabletKiosk's Gail Levy just let us know that their Sahara Tablet PC and eo TuffTab was used quite extensively in CSI New York, making its debut on the show this past Wednesday. Tune in and let's play spot the eo. Post your spottings in our TK forum! Last Wednesday night, the eo TufTab made its debut on CSI NY, playing a supporting role for the Sahara which has already been prominently featured on the popular show. That's the good news. The bad news is that the Sahara and eo TufTab were supposed to be used for the entire season, but due to the shutdown from the writer's strike, the show stopped filming four months ago.

In Podcast #43, Sierra and I chat about InkSeine, TabletKiosk's eo / Menlow announcement, what Menlow is, Sierra's upcoming cruise and what she's taking, the often-talked about Apple Ultra-Portable, and Macworld. That's right - I can't stand all this buzz any longer, and I'm going to attend my first Macworld conference in January. If anything is announced that will be of interest to GBM readers, we'll be bringing you the coverage. Here are the show notes:
