When my wife, Thomasin, got her hands on the Asus Eee PC back in December, she had some reservations about the tiny little ultra-portable that shook the mobile space. But she seems to have overcome those as it is now difficult to pry the Eee PC out of her hands. So, I was very anxious and eager to hear her reactions to the new HP 2133 Mini-Note. Last night I had her check it out and that's what you'll find in this GBM InkShow: her unvarnished and first reactions to the Mini-Note versus the Eee PC.

Thomasin is decidedly not a geek, as you can tell by her names for certain things, but I think her first blush look at devices offer OEMs a more than interesting look at what they have in their devices.

This third installment of the Asus R2H Ultra Mobile PC InkShows is focused on the GPS functionality.  In this InkShow, I go out with the R2H in my car to see how the built in GPS unit keeps track of my position.  I give an overview while using Microsoft MapPoint 2006.  I take a quick drive to demonstrate the tracking with the device, then I use the routing feature to map out a quick route.  After that, I drive around the corner to show some automated driving commands and directions.

This little device has become a nice addition to my Tablet PC experience.  The GPS functionality has definitely added to the usability of the Asus R2H for me - I use it all the time while driving around.  Guess we'll have to see how well it gets all of us around Vegas while at CES!

If you have any questions you want answered, head over to the forums in the Asus section, I'll be there to answer what I can.

Enjoy!

MattgoThis week I received a new UMPC!  The new unit is an Asus R2H Ultra Mobile PC with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.  I've been busy playing, I mean working, with if for the last couple of days, and let me tell you it's been fun.  This is my first chance to use this form factor, and so far it has been a great experience.  For me, the integrated GPS unit was the standout for buying this unit.  In fact, the first day I came home from work with it, I fired up Streets and Trips 2006 and had my own in car navigation system!  In this first InkShow, I go over the features and buttons on the outside of the unit and a quick look at the launcher that loads up at startup.  Expect more InkShows in the next couple of weeks on some of the included utilities and software installed on the R2H.

Quick first thoughts:

  • The unit is nice and performs well in my eyes - Office performs well, I have even tested a 3meg OneNote section of all images and it did really well compared to my M4 (and Warner's M200).
  • GPS unit has good accuracy
  • The launcher is really cool!
  • Kind of thick with the extended battery (but I did go about 4:30 mins with it)
  • The array and configuration of the buttons on the front work well, but some are repetitive
  • More details coming soon on another InkShow
