A few days ago we posted about an interesting new capability with Mindjet’s MindManager software that allows users to edit mindmaps in Word 2007. Michael Scherotter, Solution Platform Product Manager at Mindjet, now informs us, that due to popular demand, he will be conducting a free Webinar on Using Word 2007 to Edit MindManager Maps on Tuesday, September 26, at 10:00am PST. You can sign up for the webinar here.
UPDATE: GBM reader Tom McGee signed up for the free webinar but shortly thereafter received an email saying it has been postponed to a later unspecified date. We’ll update when we know the date.

How would you like to edit your mindmap in Microsoft Word? Well, with a new add-in for Word 2007 you can. The new innovation allows you to embed a MindMap in Word 2007 and do the following:
-
Allow users to use Microsoft Office Word 2007 to edit the document.
-
Allow users to view and modify the MindManager content, like icons, map markers, task planning information, attachments, and comments from within Word 2007.
-
This is all done without installing anything else (like add-ins) on Word 2007 because all of the code to modify the internal MindManager Map is in VBA Macros in the .docm file.
-
Create the .docm files without having Word 2007 on the system with MindManager.
-
Essentially edit the MindManager map on a system without MindManager on it. (I know this sounds like herasy to this audience but keep on reading).
-
Because the MindManager map is embedded in the Word Document, merging the Word data back with the MindManager data is possible and doing a round-trip of the map back to MindManager is practical — without losing information.
Michael Scherotter has the details on the Mindjet Blog, and AdminID of NoteTalkers is hosting an incredible video demo of this in action on NoteTalkers. Make sure you check it out. And note that Michael has put out a request for you to test this out if you are beta testing Word 2007. This looks really cool.
Hat Tip to Marc Orchant and AdminID.

I’ve had a few questions on how to link MindManager topics to OneNote existing OneNote paragraphs.
This is taken from a post I made on my old blog and included it here for archival purposes.
I have verified that these steps still work.OneNote 2007 is required. If you have any problems with these steps, please post back.
1. Within OneNote 2007, find the page or paragraph that you would like to link to. If it is a paragraph, then right click the paragraph handle and choose Copy Hyperlink. If it is a page, just right click the page and choose Copy Hyperlink.
2. Go to MindManager and click on the topic you wish to create the hyperlink for. Then click the hyperlink button.
3. In the Hyperlink screen, navigate to the OneNote 2007 section that contains the page or paragraph you want to link to. Do not paste the hyperlink that was copied in OneNote in to this field. MindManager won’t accept it.
4. Then click on Options and go to the Arguments field. Paste the hyperlink that was created in that field. Then go to the beginning of the field (ctl home) and remove everything up until the # after the section name. For example, my hyperlink looks like: (the bold part contains the text that you will remove, the italicized part contains the part you will keep.
onenote://C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/rob/My%20Documents/ OneNote%20Business/Business/DC/Punch%20list.one #1/14/2006§ion-id={7B6AF8A8-5048-4F23-8B36-2FEC4E353F28}&page-id={ C40EF86C-19CC-437E-A072-EA3FCA1B1C39}&object-id={569D97CB-BC67-0CE4-13C7-1D5536C0BB80}&17
The part you keep serves as the command line arguments that get passed in to the section that you linked to step 3.
If you are only hyperlinking to a section, you don’t need to mess with the argument stuff.

Trevor Claiborne at The Student Tablet PC takes a look at two new Mindjet Labs add-ins for MindManager that each offer some unique functionality. The first add-in he reviews is the Route Planner add-in.
The Route Planner add-in is quite simple. All you do is put your starting point in one topic, your destination in another and add a relationship between them. You then right click on the relationship and click Get Route. A webpage launches to a Mindjet site with Virtual Earth embedded with a map and driving directions. In addition, a callout topic is created off of the relationship, which contains the directions (in the Notes field) and a hyperlink to the VE map.
This add-in is due to be released on 7/31 and I’m looking forward to giving it a try.
Available now is the second add-in Trevor reviews, The Presenter add-in. Similar to the audio-syncing feature in OneNote, it allows you to sync your audio to notes that you’ve taken in MindManager, but according to Trevor:
The only caveat here is while the audio and video link to your notes it doesn't work in the reverse. You won't be able to click on a topic and go directly to that part of the lecture, but as you replay your recordings, the notes you took will be highlighted as you move along, including panning and zooming.
Here’s the link to the Presenter add-in, and here’s a link to a MindMap Trevor created showing off both new add-ins. Note that you’ll need the presenter add-in to fully appreciate the synchronization feature.
Trevor, who is also now working at Google, also is looking for suggestions for new add-ins and extensions to MindManager. He’s offering up some Google swag to the top three entries on The Student Tablet PC.

Okay — I admit it.
“I am a MindManager addict, and am not afraid to say it”.
Okay, I said it, but if there is a cure, I don’t want it. Welcome to another MindManager InkShow! If you have been around GottaBeMobile.com for long, you may remember that one of the first InkShows we did was a quick intro to MindJet’s MindManager. Remember the tire swing? No? Then you should go to this previous InkShow link and watch it. Why you say? Because it is a precursor to this InkShow, and they together will teach you a lot about this application. There is some duplication, but not much. I titled this one MindManager “Revisited”, because it contains another, more detailed look than the original one. In the original, I talked a good bit about the actual process of using a mind mapping tool like MindManager, and spent just a bit of time on the Tablet PC functionality. This time I went the other way. I spent much more time talking about the how to on the Tablet PC than the mind mapping concept.
MindJet has done a great job on this product. It is rich in Tablet PC support, and clearly shows a well thought out approach to adding tablet capability to an app that already existed and was successful in it’s own right. The use of ink, gestures, object manipulating, sketching, etc., the list goes on. In this InkShow, I try and hit it all a bit. Give this a “look see”, and see how it all works, then download a trial and get addicted!
Enjoy the show.

This is just cool. Chuck Frey has taken Abraham Lincoln’s historic Gettysburg Address and put it into a mindmap.

What caught his interest was looking at Peter Novig’s Powerpoint presentation of the same historic address, which was created to demonstrate how a visual presentation can sometimes obscure the message rather than enhance it. Not only is this a very cool demo of MindManager, it is also an interesting look at these two tools.

If you haven’t yet made your entry in the MathJournal 2 Contest here at GBM you’ve got one more day to do so as it ends on Monday. But if you’re still in the contest frame of mind you might want to head over to the DorkTech blog. Jason Dorko is celebrating his six month blogiversary (don’t blame me for that one, I think James Kendrick or Marc Orchant coined it.) Here are the details from the DorkoTech blog.
“So what do you have to do? All you have to do is leave a comment on this post, with your name, occupation, and tell me about the piece of technology that had made the greatest impact on your life. This can either be a hardware device like a Tablet PC or software related like my favorite tool MindManager. Actually I dare you to be creative with your choice and there are very few limits on the actual piece of technology that you can write about!
What will I win? Up for grabs is a fully licenced copy of MindJet MindManager Pro 6! If I recieve a lot of great entries I may also give away a copy of TechSmith's Camtasia Studio and a copy of TechSmith's SnagIt as well, so everyone should enter!
Check out the DorkoTech Contest Page for more details!”
Head over to DorkoTech to enter. Contest runs through July 28. And by the way, if you haven’t yet checked out Jason’s work with MindManager, you might just want to do so. He’s got some very informative posts about his experiences.

Mindjet’s MindManager is one of my most used Tablet PC applications, as it is for many Tableteers. Well, two Tableteers are talking quite a bit about this excellent mind mapping tool and if you’re interested in exploring what MindManager has to offer they’ve got some excellent info to explore.
Eric Mack has begun a series of podcasts with Nick Duffle using MindManager and Results Manager called appropriately Mind Mapping for Results. Eric’s podcasts and posts are always very informative and full of insights so I would highly recommend checking this series out. You can get the first installment here.
Jason Dorko is also a MindManager afficionado, and he’s blogging about the Map Explorer add-in for Mind Manager. Like Jason, I love the extensibility of MindManager and this add-in looks like another winner. Maybe Jason will do one of his excllent Dorko Demo screencasts of this in action.

I did some early beta testing with MindJet’s new MindManager version for the Mac and it works really well. The interface is very clean and simple, but follows the same work flow as the Windows version. I am really glad to see them come out with this new version.
There is a gotcha, though, for tablet pc users wanting to use their maps with the new Mac version – maps with topics that have ink will not show up properly on the Mac. If you start using the Mac version MindManager, I’d recommend converting your ink to text first.
Maps created in either the Mac or Windows versions are interchangeable.
MindManager 6 Mac sells for $229.

James and Marc just posted episode # 22 of On The Run with Tablet PCs. Here is the synopsis:
Marc Orchant and I are back with a special show #22! We have a distinguished guest, Joel Rasmussen, the producer of a documentary film soon to be released nationally in the US. Before the Music Dies is a unique look at the independent music industry and promises to be a great film for music lovers. The film features commentary from such music greats as Dave Matthews, Erikah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Branford Marsalis and Elvis Costello and was screened at the recent SXSW festival in Austin. Joel is an interesting person to chat with and we had a lot of fun talking about music and the big label music industry that makes it so difficult for good indies to get a career going.
Tablet enthusiasts and regular listeners who are wondering what we are doing talking about music on the OnTheRun with Tablet PC show can rest easy. Joel discusses how he used his Tablet PC and MindManager during the making of the film and describes at length how the combo enable him to conduct better meetings with good results. He is using an older Gateway M275 Tablet PC so we have a chat about what he should be looking at for an upgrade. It is a good show with never a dull moment so give it a listen and see if you agree. Thanks to Joel for coming on the show with us and we wish him all the best with his film, Before the Music Dies. Keep up with the film and the tour schedule on the official web site.
Enjoy the show!

I think this is safe to post about since Chris Pratley posted a comment on my blog on how to link to an individual paragraph or page within a onenote section from MindManager. I tried out his tip last night and I had a lot of trouble getting to work, until I started investigating MindManager a bit further and found the arguments option. I’ve outlined the correct process to make page and paragraph linking work. What Chris has pointed out has made my decision to switch completely to OneNote 12 even more exciting.
1. Within OneNote 12, find the page or paragraph that you would like to link to. If it is a paragraph, then right click the paragraph handle and choose Copy Hyperlink. If it is a page, just right click the page and choose Copy Hyperlink.
2. Go to MindManager and click on the topic you wish to create the hyperlink for. Then click the hyperlink button.
3. In the Hyperlink screen, navigate to the section that contains the page or paragraph you want to link to.
For example, my hyperlink looks like: (the bold part contains the text that you will remove, the italicized part contains the part you will keep.
onenote://C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/rob/My%20Documents/OneNote%20Business/Business/DC/Punch%20list.one#1/14/2006§ion-id={7B6AF8A8-5048-4F23-8B36-2FEC4E353F28}&page-id={C40EF86C-19CC-437E-A072-EA3FCA1B1C39}&object-id={569D97CB-BC67-0CE4-13C7-1D5536C0BB80}&17
The part you keep serves as the command line arguments that get passed in to the section that you linked to step 3.
If you are only hyperlinking to a section, you don’t need to mess with the argument stuff.
Now you can create a hyperlink from MindManager to a section, page, or a paragraph within OneNote 12. If you are beta testing OneNote 12, give it try.
