Acer To Acquire Gateway

- Warner Crocker

Engadget is reporting that Acer will acquire Gateway (assuming all the regulatory approvals go forward) with the deal set to close somewhere towards the end of this year. Acer is the number 3 PC maker globally and Gateway is number 3 in the US. This will be interesting to follow from a Tablet PC perspective given that we haven’t heard much from Acer there in quite some time.

Here’s a link to the press release.

It'll be very interesting to see if Acer keeps the Gateway Tablet PC line, since they discontinued their own line last year.

Yeah, I think this is really bad news for fans of the Gateway systems.

Acer really has no clue about the consumer marketplace, and it is doubtful that they will be able to keep their hands off Gateway long enough to avoid damaging what they just bought.

I can only hope to see the new company try to reinvent itself.

this would be the ripe (and right) time to do so.
