Windows Speech Recognition Macros Technical Preview

- Warner Crocker

SpeechrecogIt looks like Microsoft might be trying to pump up the volume a bit on Vista’s speech recognition, even though news of this seems to be under the radar so far. They’ve recently released a technical preview of Windows Speech Recognition Macros, a package designed to extend Vista’s speech capabilities by allowing users to create their own macros. Lifehacker has an article on this along with a number of videos of this in action.

I’m wondering if this might give a boost to the often forgotten capability of speech recognition on Tablet PCs.

I made a post about this a while back, and since then I've been using these macros regularly. I enjoy launching programs with it. It allows me to say "Open FTP" instead of saying the full program name, and stuff like that.

As the whole world shifts to "touch", I wish computer users would get off the touch bandwagon long enough to see the most natural form of communication for human beings is speech.

Speech recognition would allow all users, desktop, laptop, tablet, UMPC, MIDs and whatever future designation, to be able to interact with and actually get things done (you know, that sales report that's overdue) using just their voice.

Microsoft has a fairly good system from the XP days and now moving into Vista. Why not capitalize on that and move it to the forefront.

Speech, more than touch and handwriting recognition, is truly the next frontier for seamless integration of humans and machines.
