Changing gears at GottaBeMobile!

- Dennis Rice

image One of the awesome things about being a part of a technical world and being a technical professional is that there are never any shortages of cool things to be involved in!  The dilemma it creates however is that there are only so many hours in a day to be involved!  This is where I am at today.

As you may have noticed, my posting and activity on GottaBeMobile has slowed quite a bit in the past several months.  There are a number of reasons for this, but it is primarily due to an increase in the activity of my bread and butter day to day job as a network designer and engineer (which pays the bills for most of my gadget lust – a most critical function!).  Combine that with a great family I spend too little time with, and a couple of new interests in my life (including an awesome job working with my church!), and the result has been a marked lack of time to devote to GottaBeMobile.  In spite of my absence, the site continues to grow and morph into a better community each day. It has been amazing to see how much the community has grown and continues to do so, and I have come to realize that GottaBeMobile is so much bigger than any one individual, it is truly a community.

So in a pretty difficult decision, I have decided to change my status here to reflect my need to adjust personally.  I have officially sold my partnership interest in the site to my most capable partner Mr. Rob Bushway, and will now assume a somewhat reduced role on the site.  I will still be around to keep Rob and crew straight (which is not easy, believe me), but will from now on be a contributing writer, maybe do the occasional InkShow or review, and continue to support GottaBeMobile  in any way I can as time allows.  This change makes sense for all involved and more correctly represents my involvement in the day to day activities of running this quality community.  Rob has done a great job running and supporting the site and creating content on a day to day basis, and will continue to do so.  Warner, Matt, Eddie and Hugo are an awesome group to work with, and their contributions speak for themselves.  I now take the enviable position of being able to spread out into other things while maintaining a relationship that has and continues to mean so much to me personally and professionally.

I have a huge passion and commitment to Tablet PC, UMPC and related technologies.  I continue to welcome any and all correspondence, questions, etc. in this area, so please don’t be shy, my email will remain (dennis@gottabemobile.com), and I will most definitely still be around the site.  I would love to continue to hear from the community.

Let Team GottaBeMobile know how they are doing folks.  It takes so much more time than people realize to maintain and grow a community like this.  There is no way to properly describe the joy of getting even a simple comment or email that shows appreciation for all the effort put forth.  The team deserves and needs to hear from its community members as an honest gauge of their effort.  When you take the time to make those comments, it can really fuel the team’s effort for the next day.  Trust me on that – I’ve been there!

So with that I officially hand the ownership and future of GottaBeMobile to Rob Bushway and the rest of the team.  They are most capable hands.

See ya around the site.image

Juggling an interest with family, work and other activities is never easy. Making the choice you made is even LESS easier but I fully understand and respect it. I wanted to be the first one to say here: I don't think this diminishes your passion for Tablets and UMPCs one bit and I hope that others agree. Wish you the best, as always! You also hit the nail on the head with the community aspect that Rob, Warner, Matt, Eddie, Hugo and you have built up here. :)

Kevin hit the nail on the head. Juggling buisiness, pleasure, and the family is a very challenging issue in this day in age. It seems that the older we get, the busier we get. Good luck Dennis and You'all come back now.

Take care, Doug

Having fallen to lurker status myself, I understand the time allocation problem.

I just wanted to post a note to express my thanks for all you have done to help set this community in motion from the very early days through getting GottaBeMobile up and running.

Best of luck.

Good luck and God's speed in all of your future endeavors Dennis, especially the most important one of spending time with your family while you still can.

Looking forward to you dropping in from time to time, that will make all of your post extra special special.

Dennis:

It goes without saying that you will be missed on a day to day basis here at GBM. Your contribution and dedication, from the very beginning, have helped bring GBM to where it is today and where it will go in the future. Without you as my partner from day 1, the site would not be what it is today.

Here is to our continuing friendship and your new found freedom - go be mobile and thorougly enjoy yourself!

Dennis,
Who's gonna be the brunt of the jokes now on the podcast? We are gonna miss those nice legs on the Inkshows. How is HP ever going to keep hearing how awesome a form factor that hybrid tablet, what was it, ahh, the TC1100?
And I guess there goes any hope of having a GBM reader summit in the South. *sigh*

But I'm sure you have pondered the path your feet will take. Put your hand to the plow and don't look back. And in the words of C.S. Lewis, "Farther up and farther in!"

I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. You started a great site here. When my Splotch read your post he shed a tear onto my keyboard.

Come on Dennis - tell the whole story - you're also getting back into politics , right??? :-)

(Sorry, couldn't resist).

Best wishes!

Dennis, all the best and continued success to both you and GBM.

Thanks all for the best wishes folks. As I have mentioned to a few already, there are a number of great things going on in my life right now, and it became a choice of which great thing to cut! GBM is alive and well, and not dependent on my work at all, so it just made sense to pass it on to those who where already making it happen! Being a part of starting this is something I'll always be proud of. Now I just want to sit back and watch it grow!

I may post this as an editorial later, but I honestly have found that lessening the amount of time I spend on Tech issues has made me more effective at applying my best technical tools. It has also reallocated time for the spiritual component of my life that is so important to me and my family as I take on a role at my church. I am enjoying the process of trimming my life (and tech) down a bit, and may even get so far now as to pick up a low tech fishing pole or something! :-)

Like I said, I'll be around -- so see ya then guys!

I really wish you well and I know what a tough decision this must have been.. I worked in Telivision here in the UK, although I traded being a 'celeb' and 'famous' for the beauty of the scotish highlands and spending more time with my wife and children. I have the upmost respect for what you have given us in gottabemobile and I am thankfull for all your efforts in creating an ensemble group of some of the most unique characters in mobile tech, (BTW. I dont mean splodge, I was referring to the GBM team).

Dennis You are one in million, and I think I speak for every reader of GBM, "we will miss ya buddy"

all the best

Thanks Dean, sentiments appreciated.

I told Rob I was gonna buy a guitar and a fishing pole. Not sure what else to do with all the spare time now! :-)

Dennis,

You've done amazing things for this community and those contributions are legend. Here's to your new "great things" and may they be as fulfilling and joyful as you've help make this site for so many.

For those that are worried about Dennis not being the brunt of jokes on the podcast, have no fear. We'll still keep ribbing the big guy. We're starting a segment on mobile fishing techniques as soon as Dennis picks up the fishing pole.

Dennis,

You’ve been a mainstay with the mobile community from the start and your work, dedication and passion is amazing. You sir are a Rock Star. I am excited for you and your new challenges I will continue to look for your insightful posts even though they are to be less often. Good luck.

All the best to you, Dennis! Enjoy the fruits of your new endeavors and the tough but wise choice you've made to prioritize family and church.

Thank you for all the time, knowledge and effort you have shared. I know we couldn't count the hours. :-) Your contributions here, along with those of the whole generous GBM team, are already a lasting legacy for the mobile computing world. You have certainty made finding my way around the technology maze a heck of a lot easier.

Hope to see you here often as time goes on!

Kathie

PS: Are all the little orphan Splotches still going to hang out at GBM while looking for new homes? :-)

Thanks all. My guitar is on the way, going to Cancun next week. Not taking a computer OR a cell phone (blasphemy -- I know).
