GBM InkShow: HTC Shift as a Companion Device?

- Matt Faulkner

InkShow_4The past few weeks I have been trying to find a ‘companion’ Tablet PC to go with my work laptop.  The first device I had a look at was this HTC Shift provided by Dynamism.  We have taken a look at the Shift in the past, but this is a different angle.  Will it fill the Tablet PC/UMPC needs as a companion to a ‘regular’ laptop?   I go over the things I like and the things I don’t like about the device as a whole.  To get the final decision you’ll have to watch the InkShow!!

  • Download the high res InkShow ( WMV, 22 min, 140 mb )
  • Watch the embedded video below

It looks like a great mobile device. With a keyboard as small as that it would hurt to frequently type. I would rather purchase a mini-notebook like the HP Mini-Note which features an almost full-size keyboard. The disadvantage to this is that Windows Vista doesn't really perform well on the HP Mini-Note, but you can downgrade to Windows XP.

I am very interested in your journey to find a companion device for your laptop. I am in the same boat. I have purchased a desktop replacement laptop, but it's too big to lug around to pop into meetings just for notetaking in OneNote, accessing my diary, etc. All serious work I will continue to do on my laptop. To date, my best idea is to purchase a Ipaq 211 (with a fold out keyboard to use on the occasions that I want to type notes... I can type reasonably fast).

So I am interested in any further blogs you do on this subject, particularly because I don't have the luxury of physically trying out most devices.

The R2Hv is excellent for inking but screen rotation is a problem. Although you can rotate it at the higher screen res I can't get it to calibrate properly. I just tried the latest version of irotate, it does work but isn't quite right. Back to landscape.

I installed Origami 2 it ran well with the Pentium M processor and 2 gigs of ram. I did get a lot runtime errors using the integrated browser. It's a nice interface but to me it's not worth the resources to access programs already installed. I can live without it.
