Swing Sets and a GETAC G840XT

- Matt Faulkner

garage 002 I have a fun weekend ahead of me with this one!  We bought one of those large wooden swings sets for my daughter, and guess who gets to put it together...  Yep, that will be my weekend.  Of course, it will all be worth it when she sees the final product!!

How does this relate to Tablet PC's?  Well, I have the G840XT from TabletKiosk and what better use than when I am outside working!  I took the instruction manual and scanned it into a PDF.  From that PDF, I have been using the rugged unit to help keep track of things as I am getting everything prepared.  The first step was to use the G840XT to take an inventory of what was in the box and label every piece of wood (this will help me later).  Using the tablet, I checked off one by one as I took it out of the box!

I have the rest of the instructions from the manual on the G840XT and will be using the unit as I move outside.  This is a great use of this rugged machine as I don't have to worry about it falling off the stack of wood, dropping it in the grass or anything else that I would have to worry about during the construction if I was using a regular Tablet PC!  Maybe I'll add some video to the InkShow I am filming of me accidentally dropping it off the swing set when I am finished with it!

Sorry Matt, but when people who defect say that regular pen and paper works like gold - in this case I'd have to agree with them, I'm not too sure the time taken to scan the PDF and have to worry about battery life and all that was really worth going paperless here. Unless you can shed some benefits of using a Tablet PC for this kind of project?

Not really sure it's necessary at all, or beneficial to do this paperless. It is just something I decided to try. I have this unit to test for a little while, and while I could sit in my office and use the machine, it really wouldn't be a good example of using a rugged Tablet PC. It could be considered (loosely) as an example of a unit being used at a construction site, inside a factory taking inventory or some other situation. It might work, it might not, (you're probably right about the battery life thing, it says it's going to take over 6 hours for 2 people) but I would rather try with a computer that I didn't have to worry about dropping than my Motion LS800... As far as the PDF, it took about 2 mins to cut the 50 page booklet in half and remove the staples, then my auto feed duplex copier at work made the PDF and then it sent the PDF to my computer in about 2-3 more. It was worth the time to at least try it to bring something different to the site covering a rugged unit.

I think your idea is a great idea. When I think of a rugged tablet I think of something you can use outside in all weather...not just something you have to drop and say "look it still works". I hope it handles well and you can check things online while outside if you need it...maybe even take it to the beach and see how it handles the sand and salt air while you are relaxing

This is an interesting experiment. Having the instruction available for electrically is good for future reference, especially if you add annotations. Often assembly manuals are available for download on the manufacture’s web site. On commercial construction sites the large (24”x 36” or larger) multi-sheet plans along with the specification books are very cumbersome to use.

That said, sometimes it is easier to work with the hard copy!

Great idea Matt, our store sells swing sets and customer's often ask for easier ways and short cuts for building our swing set kits. Many customer's get confused as they flip the pages of owner manuals. I will be using your tip in the future. Please post your end results.
