A Dell Tablet PC coming this spring?

- Rob Bushway

GottaBeMobile.com reader Kevin Bals was in attendance at a large school conference on Thursday and got to speaking to his regional Dell reps about the possibilities of a Dell Tablet PC and has some fascinating information to pass along.

I was at a large school convention on Thursday and ran into the Dell Reps for my area. I was telling them about how we use the Toshiba Tablets and wireless Epson Projectors in our classrooms. I asked them if Dell was coming out with a Tablet anytime soon and they said to look for a late spring release of a Dell Tablet. They said Michael Dell was very much against the tablet. Over time though he realized the tablet was a gateway into the school for other vendors. For example since the school had to go elsewhere for the tablets they ended up buying printers, desktops or projectors from the other vendor as well.

They also said that Dell usually waits for a particular product to become mainstream and then they look to develop a product and own the market. Dell feels that since Vista will have the tablet features built right into the OS that the corporate world will embrace the tablet on a large scale. The reps said this will be especially true once service pack 1 is out for Vista. They plan on releasing their tablet to coincide with the release of service pack 1 for Vista.

In the same way that the Lenovo Tablet PC broke down some walls for the corporate and education environment, a Dell Tablet PC would do the same thing, but in a much bigger way. I suspect that we will see Dell come out with only one Tablet PC and it will probably look like their Latitude line, although that is pure speculation and not based upon any inside information.

I think Dell ought to make one Tablet PC line as well under the Latitude brand. I thought that maybe the Inspiron and Latitude line should both offer a convertible. However, by judging market demand, this doesn't seem to be a good option since Tablet convertibles are not main stream yet. (Tablet capability will be a standard option on all laptops eventually.) Toshiba still holds the highest number of Tablets sold and also the most Tablet varieties offered. I don't see any laptop manufacturer including Dell challenging Toshiba's top position in Tablet PC's.

Dell needs to change their strategy since they are no longer the #1 PC seller. (way to go HP)

Does it sound like Dell is going to do this themselves or do something inspired like buy Motion Computing and get back some of the super ex-Dell people at Motion?

So Dell is anticipating a late spring release of Vista SP1? That seems pretty unlikely to me considering the fact that Vista "SP0" hasn't been released yet. Makes me question the validity of this information. Either that or Vista is going to be pretty rough out of the box if MS is already working on a service pack...

I suspect, that SP1 is going to include alot of the features that were promised for Vista originally, but were dropped due to time constraints etc.

I do agree that its weird to be talking about SP1 when Vista hasn't even been released yet, but i've been seeing mention of this Vista SP1 all over the place.

Whoever exhile is I'd love to know where he is getting his information. As a loyal Dell customer I'm up to date on industry rankings. Globally - yes HP won the top spot by a few thousand units only. Primarily driven out of their consumer portfolio. From a corporate product standpoing (where I buy as I suspect most due) and on a North American scale Dell still leads by a huge margin. Furthermore since Tablet's are more typical of a corporate space - the call out by EXHILE that HP is now somewhat relevant because of their lead in the HOME CONSUMER space makes no sense. That's why in Healtchare it's so important that we align with vendors who truly have our best interests at heart (like Dell). Tablet PC - we'll see but it's such as small portion of our mix at the hospital anyway.

I thought it was interesting that the Dell rep talked about SP1 without Vista even officially released. The rep seemed very confident that a SP1 release was coming. What I reported is what was told to me. It could be that the rep was misinformed.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks it strange Dell doesn't sell a Tablet PC but they have a notebook with 20.1" LCD. Obviously raw sales numbers aren't that important.
