Matt's 2008 List of Predictions

- Matt Faulkner

I'll add my thoughts into the 2008 guessing game:

  • We will still be waiting at the end of 2008 for another Tablet PC with dedicated graphics card (I really hope this one is wrong)
  • InkSeine will jump up to the top of many 'must have' Tablet PC application
  • Apple will come out with a Newton replacement
  • Eee PC style machine will be coming out of the woodwork
  • More laptops will incorporate 'touch' without a swiveling screen - just touch on a normal laptop
  • With the move of more people on Mac's, there will be an increase in virus attacks on that platform
  • Slate UMPC and Slate Tablet PC's will become fewer in number of offerings as more with keyboards are introduced
  • Kindle will be forgotten about soon into 2008
  • iPhone will get 3G and Exchange Sync
    • I will purchase an iPhone after 3G and Exchange support
  • There will be 8 new Tablet PC's released this year
    • Most new Tablet PC releases will be a refresh with a new Intel package
  • N-Trig will be a contender in the Tablet PC space after positive reviews of their offerings
  • MID will become the new UMPC
  • Linux will be offered on more systems from OEM's
  • We will still be complaining about battery life
  • Google will come out with more cool 'cloud' applications
    • Something will happen, either an Internet outage, data loss... something for people to question the idea of not having a local copy of their data/photos/information

And my 2008 predictions...
- Apple will intoduce an incremental improvemnet of the iPhone & iTouch, keeping a major new UMPC/Tablet like product under wraps & feigning ignorance another year so they profit from their current R&D investment.
- Tablet & Ultra Mobile PC's will re-emerge in the the professional field as a viable tool for mobile applications as IT professionals realize it's consistancy with other corporate PC workstations.
- Interest will fizzle with the Kindle, MID's, & other non Windows based devices, as consumers let the market know they would rather compliment their smartphone or crackberry with a real PC that is just as compact & mobile but running full blown Windows including the latest Vista.
- Intel will lose face with the failing MID market as UMPC & Tablet PC early adopters demand for the next real generation of ULV CPU & GPU with better performance & battery.
- Vista will continue to struggle in IT shop deployments through 2008
- OQO will introduce a major new model by CES 2009 that will vastly improve their current 02 model, and no other pocket size PC will come close.

Happy New Year, KillBill (and my name is not Bill, I just like the movies)

The most interesting of these predictions are those for the Kindle and OQO. Personally, I think Amazon is going to have to decide whether it is a hardware vendor (a difficult business due to tech support, warranty and other issues that they aren't equipped to handle) or a software vendor, whose software will run on windows and maybe some alternative forms of OS. It seems likely that the latter will prevail someday, at least in 2009 if not in 2008. Then the desire for converged devices will prevail.

I hope OQO does not take until 2009. I would buy one of their systems today if (1) it was quieter, and (2) it had 2GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD.

I think OQO will bring out improvements to the 02 in 2008 (maybe e2+?), but do not see such a drastic change as the 02 compared to the 01/01+. At least that is my prediction.

64gb SSD looks promising, fan noise should be improved, 2gb RAM unfortunately seems a longshot with the Memory type OQO uses from what I hear.
