Kids and Tablet PCs

- Rob Bushway

Amazing - watch Kaylee, a two year-old, as she uses a Tablet PC to play a game, closes the TIP and notepad when it interferes with her game, etc.

She is really good with that pen! This reminds me how much my little ones loved playing with my Tablet P.

Two years old!!! Kids never cease to amaze me. That's just great.

My nephew is two and a half and we were goofing around with my tablet (P1610) over the weekend. I may have to find those games!!

This is not really all that surprising when you consider how intuitive tablets and touchscreen device are. My 2-year-old son loves everything on my Windows Mobile phone, but he has a hard time putting mouse movements and on-screen action together. Hearing this video on my phone, he immediately ran over and commandeered the phone to pause, play, pause, play ad infinitum.

I think one of the biggest mistakes the whole industry is making is not to focus on younger children. By the time kids get to high school, and probably even middle school, their keyboard habits are well established and provide a significant intertia to be overcome before they really "get" the pen. Younger kids already understand the device and it is more familiar to them than the keyboard. We definitely need more educational software meeting the needs of these younger folks.

My little one always wants to "Paint" on mine. She loves to scribble on the tablet or umpc in different colors. She even knows how to change colors when she wants... she's 2 1/2 - and i think it's the coolest thing in the world!!
