Interactive Whiteboards vs. Tablet PCs

- Dennis Rice

Interesting blog post today on the "A Swiftly Tilting Planet" blog I found tonight.  Brian B. AKA "Ed Techer" is looking at the difference in price and functionality of classrooms installing "Interactive White Boards" (IWB's) vs. the use of a Tablet PC technology solution.  Here is a tease of the discussion:

""..... There has been a lot of discussion (1 2 3) on the impact of interactive whiteboards (IWB)in teaching and learning. Schools around the country (and world) are heavily investing in this technology as the newest tool for delivery of information. Many IWBs are rather fragile and while we would like to think that things are never thrown in a classroom, one errant missile can leave a "dead spot" on the surface of the IWB, reducing it's functionality. Some schools want to buy one per department or grade level, but as a former classroom teacher my experience with sharing a resource like this is usually not worth the effort.......

...Now let's look at a more technologically advanced classroom: tablet PC, wireless ceiling mounted projector, wireless interactive tablet, and associated cabling...."

image I won't spoil the surprise by telling you any of his conclusions, but you may find it interesting.  It also includes some information on a special companion device called an "Interwrite Pad":

"Interwrite Learning’s Interwrite Pad was designed with the teacher in mind. This Bluetooth™ wireless pad includes Interwrite Software and gives the teacher the ability to teach their interactive lessons from anywhere in the classroom. The Interwrite Pad revolutionizes how teachers interact with their class."

I like the innovation he has shown in thinking this through.  Go check it out, and look for these solutions in a classroom near you soon!

While I agree with the article's conclusions, I do think that there are differences in age groups that bear on this which are not addressed.

With very young children, movement (i.e, getting out of the seat) and gross motor vs. fine motor work are important factors to consider.

I've seen Interactive White Boards in action at my school and they're not as good as a tablet PC. I teach daily with my tablet and wireless video projection and students tell me that they like that:

A) I'm facing them and not the blackboard
B) I'm talking to them and not to the wall
C) I'm not standing in front of what I'm writing and thus blocking their view
D) They all can see the projection screen better than a blackboard
E) Having pre-posted lecture outline notes before class because it increases their classroom participation and allows them to concentrate on the material instead of trying to be stenographers.

I can go on and on but you get the idea. Tablet PCs are overwhelmingly preferred by my students (college engineering majors).

As a high school teacher, I agree with Mark & Mark (p and k0lo...heh). Seriously, I've seen whiteboards used with the younger kids (grades k-3) and their is a "power" for them in being at the board that I suspect a tablet can't meet.

My high school students love using my tablet and I love teaching with it, especially for reasons A, B, and C. E is a bonus (particularly with camtasia studio), but it's also a downside as one of the things I try to teach my students is how to take and use good notes.
