GBM InkShow: Thomasin Takes On The HP 2133 Mini-Note

- Warner Crocker

When my wife, Thomasin, got her hands on the Asus Eee PC back in December, she had some reservations about the tiny little ultra-portable that shook the mobile space. But she seems to have overcome those as it is now difficult to pry the Eee PC out of her hands. So, I was very anxious and eager to hear her reactions to the new HP 2133 Mini-Note. Last night I had her check it out and that's what you'll find in this GBM InkShow: her unvarnished and first reactions to the Mini-Note versus the Eee PC.

Thomasin is decidedly not a geek, as you can tell by her names for certain things, but I think her first blush look at devices offer OEMs a more than interesting look at what they have in their devices.

I really enjoyed the video and think your video of her reviewing it for the first time really makes the inkshow spontaneous and enjoyable to see. Kudos to your wife for stepping forward and letting you record her and giving her grief about her terminalogy. IT is great. But the one thing a really, really do not like are the pop up ads runing in your video. This is the first I have seen them in your inkshow and I do not like them..... We (your viewers) are exposed to enough ads (please) all over everyones websites and I don't think we need to have them inkshows. It caused some stuttering of your video when they came up and were very annoying. Aside from that I really enjoyed seeing her first impressions and comparison of it to the Asus. It is helping me decide if I want to go and get the new XP Asus or fork out a little more money and get the HP. How is the battery life on the HP? Thanks for the show.

Excelent Warner. Excelent Thomasin.
It was a breath of fresh air to watch that and hear about 'pretty' and 'shiny keys' and CDs. I'm not joking. It's important to hear this.

Thomasin has a good point about it having to go all the way. Is it too close to a notebook PC in terms of specs? It's not good enough to be a persons only PC (although we hope that with Isaiah in the future, it could be!) and it's quite a bit bigger than the Eee PC.

Thanks again!
Steve.

"that is so technical" - great! What I like best about this ink show is that it shows how geeky you and everybody who watches it are!
While I don't think this show will be a reason to or not to get this pc (since I care more about the guts of a computer that about the shinyness of the keyboard) it was a great pleasure to watch it. And - to be honest - it made me feel like I should go and spend my time doing something more sensible than watching shows about computers I will never buy...

Many thanks to both of you!!

You can set Eee PC wifi to auto connect from the properties..

@jkkmobile: I've tried. Doesn't work here with our router at home or at the office. Don't know why.

Ditto to Andreas' comments.

But what would have been the response to the price difference between the two units? Maybe you'll find out this weekend.

It seems like when she reviewed the EeePC, she was pretty much on the money, pricewise. What does she think the HP should go for?

Thanks for being so brave and exposing us geeks for who we are. :)

Did you delete the previus set up first?

And set ethernet to not start at boot?

My girlfriend uses it every day with out any problems with wifi.

... we have dlink routers and repeters here. She told me that she dosn't need to reconnect on any cofe shops she uses it regulary either.

Another great review by your wife. I too wish you had asked her what she thought the price would be on the HP, and if it would have factored in on her choice of what unit she would purchase.

I think these devices will be a great first laptop for the younger generation, because to me being in my early twenties they don't seem all that geeky, they are pretty cool. At my college almost a third of the population has a laptop, and I've even seen the EEE PC twice which was a surprise considering it was before they had this in retail. No doubt I will see this HP mini note in the near future.

I wish that HP in the future would also make a Kohjinsha type device for the same price range as current. Dell said they were interesting in making a swivel screen UMPC and they just announced that they would make a small laptop so I'm really hoping it will have swivel.

Warner, your wife is hilarious. I loved the eee pc video and it was what confirmed my decision to buy one for my wifey for Christmas, so I was looking forward to watching this one. I'm sure my wife would have the same complaints about the eee pc and would rather have the HP for the bigger screen and keyboard, and bigger hardrive to store itunes on. That is huge for wifeys, at least mine. Great job again Thomasin.

Nice review! It's really heart-warming to see the great chemistry between you two, and way awesome that she not only tolerates the geekiness of things but kind of participates in it with objective views (e.g. how internet banking not working would not be linux/firefox's fault) Really rare I suppose?

Nice.
I think the idea of having a non-techy person give some opinion and attempt usage while asking some questions is a GREAT format.
I know as the family geek, and I'm sure I'm not alone, that a question often put to us is to come up with a product for a friend or family member who is not techy. So that is great.
And, just as last time with the Asus, Thomasin does a wonderful job playing the part of the every-girl.
She's cute, she's funny, she's got a name I've never heard before and she's great to watch with this stuff.
Well done...

wow and double wow!!!!!

Warner,

I am amazed by your wife and the relations that you two have, great chemistry. She understand your geekiness and you understand her. I would like to find a girl like her. You are a very lucky man!!

by the way great job and insight from Thomasin. HP and Asus (and the other UMPC or ULCPC) should watch and listen the video and all of the comments from this great couple (team).

Cheers ands have a great weekend to all of you.

The OS on the EEE is Xandros, isn't it? There seems to be an autologin-option in Xandros. Maybe these options are not installed on the EEE (since there is a kind of simple desktop environment), but there has to be a way to get this working.

Great review!!! I really like the fact that you had a "non-techie" person like myself do the review. Greatly appreciated and looking forward to the more even comparison with the larger EEEpc... :) Thank you both!!! :)
