UMPC and MID Info Coming from CeBit 2008

- Warner Crocker

GigabytecebitnewsCeBit 2008 is just around the corner and information is starting to come out about UMPCs and MIDs ahead of the show. Both jkkmobile and UMPCPortal’s Steve “Chippy” Paine look they are heading to CeBit so I’m sure we’ll see lots of great coverage from both of them. (I hope they have time to do some podcasting as I enjoyed their week of podcasts during CES.) Both of these intrepid bloggers are already running some info on GigaByte’s UMPCs and MIDS that will be shown off at the show.

I’m hoping CeBit will help us advance the story on MIDs that kicked off during CES, as we’re still a few months away from these new devices being available.

I still feel the MID is an Intel copout. Whole interest of the UMPC was an ultra mobile Windows PC we can use in everyday life like the one at our home and work.

Today's instant on, all day use smart phones with MP3, internet, email, gps, camera, etc... fulfills most of what the MID provides without the bulk.

The added bulk of a UMPC better provide more than that and function as a full blown Windows PC or they are going to get a distate of the the Kool aid they were led to drink.

A smart phone and PDA's are ok for some consumers but for real business users their lack of full windows prevents them from being a full sollution. What the UMPC's could and should do is bridge the gap between a subnotebook/laptop and the smartphone/PDA. The problem is that yes they have been generally "too big" and lacked the touch type keyboard input that would generate mainstream interest.

What UMPC designers should do is not copy any of the existing UMPC designs as their entire market has been dismal with less than 350K sold in 07'. What they should copy is the popular shape and size of the old HPC clamshells of the 1990's, like the Psion Revo. Those type of touch type keyboard jacket pocket devices sold well over a couple million a year. If you couple that shape with full windows OS then you will have what the UMPC should be to be successful.
