Lenovo Debuts Thinkpad X61 Tablet PCs

- Warner Crocker

X60_tabletIn one of the worst kept secrets in the Tabletscape, Lenovo is debuting its new Thinkpad X61 Tablet PCs, and yes, Dennis already has one of the newer models to evaluate. The Thinkpad X61 is a Core 2 Duo that runs either the L7300 chip (at 1.4GHz) or the L7500 (at 1.6Ghz) with a 800 MHz front side bus and a 4MB cache. In addition to a choice of processors, Lenovo, has a number of options for you to choose from depending on your needs.

Here are some of the options available:

  • OS: 32 bit or 64 bit Vista; or Windows XP
  • Communications: 2x3 802.11n or 2x2 MIMO
  • HD: Up to 160GB 5400rpm or up to 100GB 7200rpm
  • Display: 12.1 wide-angle SXGA + with indoor/outdoor viewing or XGA Mult-Touch

Among some of the other new features:

Lenovo is touting a new “Direct Bonding” technology called SuperView. With the SXGA + screen that includes low reflectivity, less susceptibility to scratching, and more durability under harsh conditions.

They are also touting an improvement in battery life with up to 12 hours on the 8cell battery which now is listed as standard. There is also new software control that promises to allow more flexibility in configuring power management.

This is all due to be announced today and we’ll update as we have more. (The US site doesn’t seem to have a page for it up yet.) Dennis is already running some comparisons between the X61 and the X60 (I believe he has the Multi-touch model with WWAN) and you should look for those results over the next few days.

UPDATE: Here’s that link to the product page.

Warner,

Thanks for the info. The IBM US site doesn't have much info on this new model yet, but it will let you order one. I think they have some typos on the ordering page. They list the screen as a SXGA and not an SXGA+ and they just call it a MultiView where in other areas they call it a SuperView display.

That picture is an X61, not an X61 Tablet...

It looks like the product descriptions are up on the Lenovo website... For you experienced folk out there, I have a few questions:

First, why do they offer the SXGA+ screen only for the X61 Tablet, and not the X60 or X60s? This was the case with the X60 models as well and I never seem to understand why.

Second, what is this branding with 2x3, 2x2, etc? What do these refer to? Does it possibly mean that multiple communications systems will share a single antenna? It would make sense to me to list out all the wireless systems the machine can use... I just don't understand what it's saying.

Third, is the Turbo memory a mPCI card or is it mounted directly to the motherboard?

Brandon,

Good questions that I'm asking myself, and sad to say I don't have the answers to them yet. Working on it though.

Looking forward to the GBM low-down on the X61T - I think I am going to change my pending X60T order for one!

I have read that you can't have both WWAN and Turbo memory, cos there are not enought mini-PCI slots. The first one is either taken up by wifi or bluetooth?

The lenovo website currently will not let you configure a WWAN X61T with Turbo memory, but you can with the non-WWAN version.

It is indeed my understanding that you have to make a choice between WWAN or the Turbo memory.

Shame. but useful to know there is a definite choice to make!

Thanks for the blindingly fast post in response ;) hello Warner from London btw, sitting in the sun with my aging Dell...

Very exciting...looks like I'll be ordering soon. I hear TurboMemory doesn't boost performance at all, at least in prototype tests.

I just got off the phone with lenovo and they tell me that the customize page has a typo, the SXGA option is actually for SXGA+ and the site should be updated soon (he's been getting calls all day about this it seems). If you order one now with that option selected then you will get a SXGA+ screen. Hopefully I'll get my order in a timely manner.

Is the 12.1 wide-angle SXGA + with indoor/outdoor viewing a better screen then the SXGA + on the X60 tablet?

cphickie,

Tough to say at this point as no one here has had hands on experience with it yet. Should be able to give a report sometime next week we hope.

When I spoke with Lenovo this morning, they told me that the SXGA+ screen that is available at this time is NOT the Superview SXGA+ panel. That one will not be available for another month....

I was hoping it would get some'a that wide screen action that some of the other Lenovo notebooks have been getting.
