10 EverNote Web Beta Invites Available

- Rob Bushway

We've been talking up EverNote's new web notetaking system that syncs seamlessly between multiple client. I'm currently using it on my Mac, Tablet PC, Vista installation on my mac, and other devices to keep all my notes in sync, as well as clipping and taking notes using their webclipping function. Seriously, OneNote better have something up its' sleeve because EverNote has redefined the rules of the notetaking game. It's not perfect and could use some work on the WYSIWYG formatting, but I have not touched OneNote since getting EverNote up and going.

I've got 10 beta invites to the first 10 folks who reply to this post, along with their email address.

I really like the idea of seamlessly synchronized notes, but I'm also a heavy user of OneNote's audio-notes features (time-tagged recordings that correspond to what I'm typing or inking at that moment). Does EverNote also do this?

I would love to read about your experiences with EN. I just removed the prior version (2.x), and have also removed 3.0 Beta. I was having trouble with the lack of local storage, and the lack of templates for the notes in the Beta. I am still using ON, and Notes on my Win Mob for syncing. When, oh when, is MS going to have an update for ON Mobile?

Maybe I was not taking advantage of what it is possible to do with EN? I sort of got stuck on what it could not. Again, would be really interested in your useage information.

Hello Warner! OneNote is the single application I miss since jumping to Mac earlier this year. I would really appreciate an invite to beta. Take care! JACK

As good as Evernote is it is still a pretty poor tablet program. It could however be awesome. It needs to be able to accept mixed notes and be able to annotate on images etc. More control over pen selection would be nice; and a way to import and export ink.

If you're a tablet user let Evernote know we want more Tablet stuff. Maybe if we get enough people pushing we may get a great program. Now, during the beta is the time.

I've got a few invites available as well (7 actually), so send me a few e-mails and and I'll send them over as well (I don't want to duplicate any that Rob just did).

Those who get the invites will also be able to offer 10 invites each, so folks who get them, don't forget to stop on by and share the love... (so to speak).

I too have ten invites. Rob, if you could, let me have a list of ten people above that you have not been able to invite and I'll sort it.

I'm with a couple others here ...

I love, love, love the sync capability. I love the fact there's a Firefox extension. But this is all bells and whistles, because what matters is note-taking.

And I find the note-taking interface itself to be utterly painful, especially coming from OneNote (which I think never got the credit it deserves as a quirky but innovative app). You get none of the free-form note-taking capabilities and layout, none of the ability to break down multiple levels and manage multiple notebooks (yeah, I know, tags are all the rage, but...), and basic formatting features can be kludgy to use.

I hope *someone* at Microsoft is listening and gives OneNote better sync support via Office Live. But I'll sacrifice a little on sync in order to have better note taking, which for me is the whole point.

Yes, I agree with a lot of what is being said here. ON is far better at pure note taking, which is what my P1610 is really used for now with a little Mindmapping since I got my MacBook.

However EN wins in many ways simply having multiple clients, web access, mobile access and the all important sync capability. I love the fact that laying in bed catching up with a podcast on my iPod Touch I can suddenly remember something that needs doing, use wifi to get to my EN notes and drop a prompt in. Then the next day sync my work laptop up and add detail. I simply have no option for this in ON unless I am using a WM smartphone, which I do not have.

I can't even describe how much time I have lost trying to find a decent way of getting ON to sync files across a locked down work machine and network, my own Tablet and my MacBook running boot camp. I know you can use a USB drive etc. but that isn't practical for me - I want to turn any of my PC's on, sync and go.

Also remember that EN is in beta and I'm sure there is a lot more to come. For example I really need a printer driver to match what ON can do - that is something I use a lot. And password lockable notes for the private stuff I don't want easy access to. The tablet part does need adding to but nothing that I see is impossible.

So this does put a lot of pressure on the ON team to respond. They need an easy way to sync machines, FolderShare like but which will not break the notebooks if they are both open (EN allows this, I've tried it). They also need to consider non-Windows users. They have the better app at the moment but for EN to catch up all they need to do is start adding the features. For ON to continue to lead they need to re-think a little, implement a new sync strategy and offer clients for other non-Windows devices. I know which one I would bet on of the two! :)
