Elephantware: Bloated Programs That Slow Down Your PC

- Warner Crocker

Well we already know we have CRAPWARE to frustrate us and our computer usage, and for me that is a pretty broad category that includes anything that I don’t want on my computer. DownloadSquad is now coining a new term for what I’ve always called Bloatware, (a subset of CRAPWARE in my book.) They are calling programs that are filled with bloat and slow things down, Elephantware. I’m sure some elephant lovers out there somewhere are going to object to this and create a stir, but it makes sense. Check out DownloadSquad’s Top 5 Elephantware programs.

Wow, they're only right on 2 of 5, that's a failing grade where I come from. They basically decide to poke at applications and offer few if any real alternatives.

iTunes - While it is slow they don't name a viable alternative music service. So far there are precisely zero capable of playing the m4p files that Apple sells. At least it works Rhapsody is even worse, slowing the machine even when it wasn't running. Sure I can rip CDs, but that would require me to buy a disc with 1 track plus 10-12 filler tracks for 10 times as much, umm no thanks.

Outlook - Do they have a job beyond griping on a blog? Pretty much every decent sized business will be using outlook + Exchange. It's fine for personal stuff, but no one takes business emails from yahoo or gmail domains seriously, they smack of spam/scams. Outlook also allows me to pull all my personal accounts together and send from them individually, I have yet to see a web based service that offers anything remotely resembling this.

Acrobat - It eats space but it opens large PDFs faster than anything I've played with including PDF Annotator and Bluebeam PDF Revu.

They have something on Real player, I stopped using it in the 90s when they started including popups and spyware. Even media player is better than this turd.

IE - It works for me as an IT professional but it isn't the most secure thing out there, especially if you aren't the brightest bulb and click on everything people send you.

I object! The elephant is a strong, noble creature that is the literal equivalent of a workhorse in some parts of the world. Equating the powerful beast with bloat is an insult.

That said, why do people still compare Microsoft Outlook with email-only solutions? Gmail, even when sync'd with Google Calendar, does not offer everything that Outlook does, so of course Outlook will be heavier, but that extra functionality makes me more productive, not slow me down.

White Elephant-ware.
Ya gotta feed it and care for it and you can't get rid of it...

Programs that have over-active/secret copy protection scemes (that install files without your knowledge) and screw up other programs after you install said program

Personally I've never understood why iTunes was popular, except that it comes with iPods. It eats tons of space and I personally find it to look rather ugly. That being said, Apple has done a great job trying to shut down other media players from interfacing with their new iPods. Winamp with ml_ipod or pmp_ipod plugins (pmp_ipod is included) are still my preferred choice over iTunes.
