What Are Your Favorite Free Applications?

- Matt Faulkner

I was reading the newest PC Magazine this morning during some down time.  They have an article in there called "157 Best Free Software Tools".  There are some great programs in there and some I am going to check out real soon.  There are quite a few listed that I like and install when I get a new computer or after a fresh install.

  • The Obvious:
    • Live Writer and Live Messenger - posting and communicating with others
  • The lower profile applications:

What free applications are your first to add on?  What free applications do you use every day??  I'll report back later on some that I try from this article I am reading!

Notepad++ link broken, probably on account of not putting "http://" at the beginning of your href src value.

Winamp - Not as much of a resource hog as iTunes, but not as barebones as Foobar. Once you add the ml_iPod plugin (I've found it better than the included pmp_ipod) you don't even need the ipod/itunes service installed to transfer.

CCleaner - Registry cleaning, junk cleaning, heck, even has a faster uninstaller screen than Windows.

I've been keeping a list of applications that are capable of running in a portable mode (like from a usb stick and doesn't require installing). You can checkout my last post in the series at , and an .

I've been meaning to review the apps in the toolset, as I use many of them often.

Total Commander (www.ghisler.com) is without a doubt the best app I've ever used and is the first I install on any machine or USB stick. It does anything you could ever want to do with a file, folder, or disk; is extensively customizable; has hundreds of extensions and plug-ins; supports every compression algorithm; synchorization; renaming utility; search; and - best of all - it runs from a single folder (directory) and does not need to install in the registry. It will save its own configuration data within its own folder. You can put it on a USB stick and run it - even if you do not have install privileges. I've been using it for more than 10 years (originally it was called Windows Commander.) Unfortunately for Tablet PC users, it makes extensive use of right-click menus...

The first prize of freeware is for CLCL, a copy or cut and paste app able to memorize many differents enties : text, photo and move elements from many places... Thirty on my pc. With a simple shorkey,i can see a panel with the last thirty copy or cut elements. I see texs, and small pictures for each pic i copy or grab (you can choose the standard size). One click and the element is available in OpenOffice apps, Photoshop, or any other software., There is a Template section for keeping my own standard sentences, logos, or codes for forums.... Templates can be saved and recall (dat files).

I am unable to work without CLCL. A really must-have free app available with some plugins at www.nakka.com (choose english). For XP or Vista (but for Vista, install it outside Program Files...

Agree with me for the first prize ???

I posted the following list yesterday with hyperlinks to the programs, but it was rejected as suspicious, presumably because of the multiple hyperlinks:

Process Explorer - Task Manager on steroids

AutoRuns - Control what starts in Windows

TreeSize - Check space used in folders

Spybot - Anti-spyware

WnBrowse - Examine files at the byte level

Reverse Polish Calculator - Stop suffering with standard calculators

ChemPad - Visualize molecules in 3D

Scratch - Game programming that kids love

Graph - Simple graphing

That was my second comment in a few days that got dinged and never appeared at all. It is too bad that the filter is so sensitive - people will respond by leaving out the hyperlinks.

My favourite free apps that haven't been listed above:

Safari: Web Browser (http://www.apple.com/safari/download/)

iTunes: Music Jukebox software (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/)

7-Zip: opens/creates zip files (http://www.7-zip.com/)

Picasa: Photo jukebox software (http://picasa.google.com/)

Easy Thumbnailer: quickly resize images (http://www.fookes.com/)

Putty: ssh client (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/)

TightVNC: vnc/remote access client (http://www.tightvnc.com/)

Handbrake: Video compression (http://handbrake.fr/?article=download)

CoreFTP: FTP Client (http://www.coreftp.com/download.html)

I've discovered some really great apps by reading the other comments; thanks very much!

Since Peter Norman managed to get a post through the filters with a bunch of hyperlinks I will try again do the same for the two programs that I listed that have names too general to find easily by Web searching:

Reverse Polish Calculator: Stop suffering with standard calculators:

http://www.tordivel.no/xcalc/

Graph: Simple graphing: http://www.padowan.dk/graph/

Maybe if there is text both before and after the hyperlinks the filters can be appeased.
Monday, February 18, 2008 10:28:06 AM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
Ah.. mine entry had lots of hyperlinks as well.. and never appeared.

Cygwin - unix-like under Windows
ImageMagick - image processing
Audicity - audio editor
Virtualdub - video editor
IrfanView - photo viewer
AutoIt and AutoHotKey - for scripting the Windows GUI
StrokeIt - mouse gestures
ImgBurn - CD/DVD burner
Sysinternals (now owned by Microsoft) includes AutoRuns and Process Explorer (mentioned above)
2xExplorer, xplorer2, and FreeCommander - 2-pane explorers
Synergy - like a KVM, using the network
Ditto-cp - fancy clipboard... can handle Ink... can show thumbnails of past clipboard entries
ReNamer [den4b] - renames files
Unlocker - frees file handles when attempting to delete files

(as other have already mentioned: 7zip, PuTTy, FileZilla, VNC)

Well, you'll find notepad++ at portableapps.com also.

My additional favorites are (not necessarily in this order):
- KePass (at portableapps.com) for keeping all my logins an other secret information handy and secure (portable version available also)
- Process Explorer from Sysinternals (sysinternals.com), much better than MS Taskmanager
- Renamer (www.den4b.com) to batch rename files with many options
- ClearType Tuner Power Toy by MS (see XP Power Toys) to adjust Cleartype Settings, especially effective for tablet users in conjunction with
- ClearType Rotator - wonderfull for adjusting Cleartype for the different screen orientations (and in portrait modes OFF!:-) at www.dragonseye.com/blog/pages/CTR.html
- K-Lite Codec Pack with MediaPlayer Classic, makes Quicktime, Realplayer and others obsolete
- FreePDF XP to print to PDF (even multiple documents into one PDF, www.freepdfxp.de)
- 7-Zip
- Experience Pack for Windows XP TE (MS) especially because of the Snipping Tool 2.0
- XnView, an efficient multimedia viewer, browser and converter (portable)
- Google Sketchup - a very good 3D visualisation tool (wouldn't call it CAD)
- Autostitch (www.autostitch.net) - a free automatic stitching software for generating panoramic images
- Antivir Personal (www.avira.de)- free antivirus tool (one of the best)
- Altiris Software Virtualisation Solution - just what the name says: encapsulate software into virtual "Layers" on your PC, I use it especially fo testing and quick remove afterwards (juice.altiris.com/svs)
- Sysinternals PsTools - many valuable tools for network use (again www.sysinternals.com)
and, well...
- Ink Seine (of course, but now on hold due to issues with non-english OS :-/

I guess there's still more (thinking of Firefox Addins like GeckoTIP, Grab and Drag, Image Zoom, Tab Mix Plus, Download Manager Tweak, Pdf Download, IE Tab...), but that'll do it for today.

Andy
