Willcom's D4 MID Running Vista

- Matt Faulkner

willcom d4 Why do these cool devices always have to only be available in Japan??  This Willcom D4 looks like my AT&T Tilt on steroids but it's running Windows Vista on a 1.3 GHz Atom processor.  Even though it has a full QWERTY keyboard, my guess is that it will fall into that 'too small for touch typing and too big for thumb typing' category.

  • 188 x 84 x 25.9mm and 470grams
  • 1.3-GHz Atom processor
  • sliding / tilting 5-inch
  • 262k color
  • LED-backlit
  • 1,024 x 600 touchscreen
  • 64-key QWERTY keyboard
  • 1GB of memory
  • 1.8-inch 40GB disk
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
  • microSD slot
  • HD audio codec with mono-speaker
  • Opera browser
  • 802.11b/g WiFi

Looks nice, and I had a Sharp laptop few month ago : never had any problems with batteries.
Just saw it on DFJ website for preorder, I'm wondering if I will spend my bucks on it...

Want more money...!!!

I just saw a publication about it in a local website, claiming it to belong to "Sharp" (which is a preety known firm, at list in this part of the swamp)with a price tag of aprox. 1275$ (not including the service provider plans!)

you can see the report and the specs here -

I think this is the best UMPC thus far. Finally an OEM with a little brains realizes that the world uses full windows with a real keyboard not a thumb keyboard or pen. I think that is why you do not see this in the US; the US companies are just clueless.

The form factor alone make it worth the non cellular company subsidized price. I hope that they offer to make a model for one of the US cell companies as this unit in Japan is something like $400 when purchased with a two year subscription to the local wirless. If not I think it is still worth the $1200-1500 price tag as all the rest of the UMPC's are either too large and or have the lame thumb input or pen only input.

Many tablet PC users noted that a 1400x1050 12inch tablet PC screen causes too much eye strain. I tend to agree so I use reading glasses (hehehe). I can't see how reading glasses would help at identifying the tiny icons on that screen! I don't know if the head of the stylus is small enough to select an item on the start menu (I am being a bit extreme).

I hope MS comes up with an alternative GUI for small screen devices.
